Be Careful, by meatbag on Jun 27, 2007 14:37:37 GMT 1, There has been a handfull of Banksy pieces on the bay lately from a particular seller stating...
WINNING BIDDER WILL RECIEVE FULL PROVENANCE AND RECIEPTS FROM GALLERY I PURCHASED FROM, STATING AUTHENTICITY AND THAT THEY WERE GIFTS FROM BANKSY TO FELLOW ARTIST AND THAT THEY WERE DIRECTLY RECIEVED BY THE GALLERY FROM THE RECIPIENT HIMSELF.
I and many others have been in touch with Lazarides to confirm the authenticity of this. After providing them all the info I obtained they were able to confirm that PunkDaisy (which is the gallery the seller claims to have provenance)... has NO IDEA who this seller is. They also confirmed that Banksy did not provide such gifts.
* edited by request, pm with questions. sorry just trying to help *

Be Careful, by danvnuk on Jun 27, 2007 15:22:08 GMT 1, This is quite worrying.
The Bombhugger this guy was selling went for just under 6k, I would hope whoever bought that checked out the provenance before buying- but if your saying that Punk Daisy has no idea who the seller is and hasn't provided provenance for these prints - then it would seem not.
I was watching this auction previously and the signature etc looked spot on, so Lazarides stating there's "a lot of fake Banksy pieces coming out of this part of England" whilst discussing this sellers prints in paticular is not good and will surely have implications for the Ebay market.
The same guy is currently selling a signed laugh now - also 'a gift' and therefore un-numbered.
I really don't know what to make of this - I'd like to see the seller come on here and defend himself before commenting further.

Be Careful, by danvnuk on Jun 27, 2007 15:51:37 GMT 1, Just emailed the guy through Ebay and invited him to the forum to discuss the questions raised about his prints.
Be very interesting to see if he shows up.

Punk Daisy had these for sale on his site for a long time.. and came with the same provenance. I.e, they were gifts from Banksy to another artist that either sold them through PD or PD bought them from him.. whatever... PD knows who the seller is, that's ofr sure.. maybe the "artist" doesn't want Banksy and co to know that these are his.. either way.. the prints are signed Banksy prints and if the prov checks out.. then they have prov. Don't see the issue here really.

Be Careful, by jonpud on Jun 27, 2007 18:10:36 GMT 1, I have never met the guy selling but I know where he has bought the signed, un-numbered prints from, I also know who bought the recently sold Bombhugger. Beleive me the buyer is no fool and totally knows his stuff.
in a conversation I had once with the owner of the gallery in question these prints were 'gifts' from Banksy to a fellow Artist but they were never meant to be made available for sale.
I have heard that steve laz is well p1ssed off that the artist in question has sold them on hence the denial that the prints are genuine.
I do not want to say too much but I think you get the picture! The information I have given here is pretty much hearsay but it does seem to stack up, also the prints are sh1t hot if they do turn out to be fake! If someone was going to all this trouble to reproduce Banksy's work they would not have cocked up the signature on the Laugh Now.
IMO these prints are genuine and signed, problem is without the Artist in question admitting they were given to him then the value will always be an issue and a problem!

Be Careful, by danvnuk on Jun 27, 2007 18:47:52 GMT 1, I recieved a reply from the seller.
He was pretty upset about the validity of his prints being questioned - and basically said to contact Punk Daisy and they will provide any provenance needed.
I feel bloody awful for emailing him now.
This is all the Prague stencillers fault.... If he hadn't have left his message, I wouldn't have spent all day checking POW and the Forum, I then wouldn't be sticking my nose in where it's not wanted - making some stranger feel bad, and therefore making myself feel bad.
Prague Stenciller.....I'll get you!!!! <shakes fist in the general direction of Czechoslavakia>
I'm even toying with the idea of unleashing 'miss bobblehead'....

Be Careful, by meatbag on Jun 27, 2007 20:24:58 GMT 1, I hope you guys are right because I certainly didn't want to cause any unnecessary drama, but as a Banksy noob I felt I should reach out to Laz with all the info and questions I had. Steve and his people are incredibly generous with there time so when I heard back I simply wanted to share what I knew. For the winners sake of that auction, and others, I really hope they are real.

Be Careful, by Zippy on Jun 27, 2007 20:45:53 GMT 1, guys. remember innocent until proven guilty? i hope you are not trying to 'diss' the seller so you can swipe it with 3 seconds to go. Punk daisy knows exactly who sold them too him otherwise he would not have bought them. He is a dealer and would not have paid out for some dodgy, fake prints without checking the prov or at least knowing who he was buying them off. get your facts right before slating people. It can be damaging and personally upsetting for the seller. If you bother talking to the seller or PD I am sure you will be able to make up your own mind on whether it is genuine or not. Dont just follow the sheep on here, think for yourselves. Z

Baaa Baaaa Punk Daisy bought em from a graf artist who told him that Banksy gave them to him as a gift for services rendered, which he probably did. Punk Daisy sold them on the same story, no doubt embellished. That's all the provenance these prints have, It's maybe enough if you want to buy them, but not if you ever want to sell them. The further these get from the source, the weaker the provenance becomes.

Be Careful, by forzainter on Jun 29, 2007 2:02:38 GMT 1, Just a quick update... and a good ending...
Myself and the Bomb Hugger ebay winner visited the guy this evening and bought both prints, we firmly believe these are both 100% Genuine !!! the lovely guys at Punk Daisy (James is a diamond, texting me back fom abroad last night is ace service) have agreed to give us a full letter of Provenance stating exactly where they recieved them from (which will make interesting reading), for myself and the Bomb Hugger winner, who is a well known collector of various artists, this is good enough !!!
we also were given the original reciept from Punk Daisy which showed the guy had bought a Rude Copper, an A/P Kate, Laugh Now, Bomb Hugger and a full set of Rats.... all at the same time...
we saw the Kate A/P, i dribbled a bit - first time ive seen one in the flesh.... oh how i want one of these.... the savings are now gone though
i took a gamble as i so wanted this piece, so thought i would drive up with my friend who won the bomb hugger to check it out.
the Monkey is hanging on my wall and looking mint (no pun intended for people from Hartlepool)
