Idiots Guide To Buying Prints on Ebay, by arcam on Jun 4, 2007 18:58:22 GMT 1, Hiya,
I'm looking to buy a couple of prints from ebay and I'm a bit clueless as to what I should check with regards provenance. I'm assuing I need to be able to follow a print back to point of purchase, and obtain receipts for all?
In cases where a receipt is not available do POW provide confirmation, should I ask, that the print is indeed in the sellers name?
Thanks.

Idiots Guide To Buying Prints on Ebay, by mickg on Jun 4, 2007 19:25:14 GMT 1, Yes - you should try & get paperwork covering each transfer of ownership. With the older prints a POW email to the original owner confirming that they are the registered owner is as good as you're going to get for the first owner. POW will tell you, the buyer, on the phone whether a name is registered with a particular numbered print but they won't send you an email to that effect - they will only send that to the registered owner. Given all this I have to say how surprised I am at the prices paid for recent prints that have no provenance! The new owners will have a problem if they decide to sell at some point in the future.

Idiots Guide To Buying Prints on Ebay, by tomhills1 on Jun 4, 2007 20:45:11 GMT 1, ditto, if you email dora and ask her if john smith is the registered buyer of number x of xxx print. if you're nice she should confirm/deny it for you, POW are not obliged and do this service as a favour to you - so be grateful!
if you're buying from a second/third-hand owner etc, just make sure you can trace the paper trail. who they bought from and when, and who that person bought from and when. all the way back to the first purchase.
lack of this information should be considered in relation to the print in question. price, rarity, condition are obvious considerations and provenance should be included, the higher the value the more essential it becomes.
if in doubt, ask about. anyone of us will try and give you useful info and/or opinions but make sure any money spent is done so well, just incase you become the seller one day.

I'm still having hassle with one ponce who is faffing around with details from a Banksy that I bought from him Trying to be pleasant over it at the moment, but if it doesn't get sorted soon, he is going to enter a very interesting period of his life

Idiots Guide To Buying Prints on Ebay, by tadghostal on Jun 5, 2007 0:44:20 GMT 1, Ditto. Bought a print on ebay from the UK and the seller listed it with a flat-rate postage to anywhere in the US for 50GBP. After it is shipped and arrived here, he tells me the actual cost was 141GBP to ship (WTF?!!! I've shipped to the UK and the MOST I've paid was using FedEx Priority Overnight and it cost $110--less than half what this joker wants me to pay, and he sent it FedEx 3 day!!) and he expects me to reimburse him the difference.
I responded, no dice--you are responsible for setting the terms of a deal before both parties agree to it, and once you've both agreed, you both have to follow through with what was promised. Now he won't send the original tube or the bill of sale that he agreed to provide upon our deal.
I'm pissed!

If it was me I'd do a charge back as Tube/Bill of sale is part of the purchase. Or at least threaten him with it.
