A new user name / ebay account had been created today to ensure that this item didn't go for a price under what the buyer wanted. The new bidders name was 5185eddie which rings a bell as I was offered the canvas before it went on ebay as you can see from the email below from eddie******@xxxxxxx
Hi Mike Thanks for the email. It's good that you're a true collector, I really like his work too and it seems ashame I'm having to release some of it, but hey ho. The photo's don't really do it justice and in the flesh its a seriously thought provoking piece with a great blend of colours, ideas etc. I originally bought it because it wasn't as 'busy' as some of his work and really does combine what he's best known for - butterflies, bullets/targets and the image of Christ. Its unusual to see all of these in one piece. It comes with the normal prov from the gallery and very unusually emails from Dan to me describing his work/inspiration. They were written when he was drunk and are quite interesting!! The price I paid was ยฃ2995. Now the Forster gallery which sold out instantly started them at ยฃ3,800 (maybe plus vat) and in my opinion they weren't as good by a long shot (some people felt he rushed to get the show ready). The postage up to Manchester will be quite a lot (it will be in a big crate) but would be around ยฃ50 at a guess. If you're interested let me know. I've had quite a few emails and I'm trying to keep it fair on everyone.
Kind regards
Ed
Really underhand imo and just wanted to warn you all
Cheers

Shill Bidding..., by tomhills1 on May 6, 2007 23:29:37 GMT 1, speaking of shill bidding, did anyone else think it were a bit suss that grin the other day that went for ยฃ3900, was up for that amount for a few days then low and behold it dropped back down to ยฃ3800 and finished eventually at ยฃ3900? i wonder if someone shilled it up to the max then dropped out and allowed the next best bidder the chance to buy it at top dollar? it's easy done.
just my cynical nature, totally un-substantiated.

Shill Bidding..., by curiousgeorge on May 6, 2007 23:54:22 GMT 1, Worse still is damn ebay making the changes to the bidding system making it even easier to shill. Shilling goes hand in hand with the place really, still makes my blood boil. Ive had some giggles in the past emailing people saying i was curious to know why the same ip bids on the item via my item tracking software

i bet you haven't had one reply either!
i agree, it is so easy to sabotage an auction these days, both as a seller and a buyer: i know a few little tricks now (all underhand and totally immoral), only a matter of time 'til they're all doing them.

Shill Bidding..., by finsburyparkranger on May 7, 2007 14:31:42 GMT 1, It happens all the time and people should clearly know that shill bidding is common practice on ebay. I still believe that some large dealers in the market also bid up some items just to raise the overall price of the stock as a whole. I'm sure there are some rich art dealers that wake up and go "hmmm I think Its about time Barcode makes 9.5K today " whilst stroking their obese white cat.

Shill Bidding..., by pezlow on May 7, 2007 17:53:07 GMT 1, Ant - unfortunately have already lent the book to someone else. Who knows when/if I will get it back (I always work on the principle that if you lend a book out there is only a 50% chance that you'll get it back).
Romany - good to meet you too. I'm sorry your wife didn't like the piece. Give her time and maybe she will come round.

The gravity of this comment is truer than you may think. I recently put a Warhol I own on Ebay and with a very low buy now price through a art broker friends user ID. We received email from a few different galleries that we were undermining the value of Warhols and we should raise the price. In the end, we had 3 auction listings and all 3 were bought using the Buy Now... but no bidder came through on payment. It was as if the competing galleries were out to sabotage my sale, or at the very least, were attempting to prop up the market some so as to justify their exorbitant gallery pricing.
