Cy Twombly is an outstanding artist IMO but all the same this sentence from that article: Banksy is a thick person's idea of a radical artist. Twombly is a thinking person's. makes me want to give that journalist a good slapping.
Why is everything compared to Banksy when there's just nothing to compare?

Banksy "Handbags" in Guardian Arts Blog, by afroken on Jun 3, 2008 21:27:35 GMT 1, Judging from the photo, Mr Jones is a typical baby boomer. In other words he is a smug cunt who thinks that anyone below the age of 45 has nothing to offer 'his' world. It comes down to his deep rooted fear of growing old and a new generation stealing his thunder. He abuses his position of trust by polluting the media with the concept that anything youthful is for thick people and degenerates. He probably drives a Harley Davidson too.
This article is simply a desperate cry for help.

The article aside everything i've seen of this Twombly has been utter garbage, there is a room on the fourth floor of the tate modern with around ten pieces from this guy and every single one looks as though a 2 year old had executed them. emperors new clothes anyone?

Love it - please post that on the Guardian's website. I'm sure if you look up tunnel vision & bitter in google it has a picture of this guy

Banksy "Handbags" in Guardian Arts Blog, by Pattycakes on Jun 4, 2008 14:04:06 GMT 1, What I am about to say will be contentious, but I do agree with the article. Twombly is a far more important artist than Banksy, certainly in terms of his historical importance now and indeed how he will be percieved in the future. Saying this I think that the comparison is frankly pointless, as they really have nothing to do with each other, Twombly is in a very different league to Banksy, his art will always speak to "art elitists", and those with a serious art historical understanding, and Banksy will not. Banksy's work is immediate, and frankly is more closely related to Warhol. Effectively the elitist would argue that Warhol did it in 1963, and what does Banksy offer that is new other than a 21st century politicised re-hashing of a 40 year old art form? Do I like Banksy? I wouldn't be on this forum if I didn't but I am also a realist and recognise the wider limitations of an artist that I happen to like.

Banksy "Handbags" in Guardian Arts Blog, by onemandown72 on Jun 4, 2008 14:16:42 GMT 1, I don't think that the majority of complaints where about the elevation of Twombly over Banksy (which I agree is a poor comparison), but more the tone and arrogance of the critic. If you then read down the blog he compunds this by claiming that he compared to Banksy to generate interest in Twombly. If Twombly is as good as he feels why does he then feel the need to promote via and artist he considers only appeals to thick people. The tone of the article and attitude of the critic is pompous, insulting and ultimately self defeating as it has alienated the vast proportion of it's audience.

Banksy "Handbags" in Guardian Arts Blog, by anewspace on Jun 4, 2008 14:25:12 GMT 1, alot of these articles always seem to have quiff of press release and pr people. You can almost see the tate pr woman going how do I get kids into Twombly. I know throw in a comment about Banksy - LETS HAVE A HEATED DEBATE.
We're mor ethe fool for falling for this stuff. I think people just want to see the real thing - a banksy, a twombly or Warhol. Only when you see the real thing do people get it.
Sure the internet is great for picking up cool prints and taking the exclusive quality away from galleries but its getting harder and harder to see the real thing.
These sort of articles are just silly

Good points and i think i have to agree with you on this . I however see no point in calling people who appreciate Banksy "thick" and Twombly "thinking". I love them both , so what does that make me !!?

not sure about the banksy being immediate makes it a re-hashing of warhol. Banksy is far more than a print/ image merchant, he puts art into places that were unheard of, sticking the images of gas masked women and cavemen with trolleys into museums, a clamped chariot statue, beware crocodiles in regents park, portaloo stone henges in wiltshire, bent coppers, insolent queens guards, guantanamo prisoners at disneyland, wont even bother with his work in the middle east.
All in public view, all asking you to think about what you are doing, what you are accepting. Taking it a step further and becoming the authority, designated graffiti zone that was duly bombed. Its immediate because today people want everything so quickly, a million channels, every food available on your high street from the world, a million niche magazines and a billion websites to suit your tastes.
He is very of the moment, a great artist captures the zeitgeist, no one does this better than Banksy today, so he will be very important in the future in an art history reference.
