Banks use a communication system called SWIFT to send and receive messages to and from each
other and a BIC is a unique reference number or code to identify all banks on the SWIFT network.
You will be able to see your BIC on your paper bank statement.

beejoir, if you've got internet banking and paperless statements you should be able to get a full statement downloaded from the HSBC site, which normally has the Swift BIC and IBAN on it as CBL mentions, hopefully you can avoid the pain of the lovely call centres..
