IF I WERE BANKSY...., by clipit101 on Apr 16, 2008 16:06:22 GMT 1, May I suggest extreme caution and common sense at all times! I live in South America (Brazil) and in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, you'd be extremely ill-advised to just wander into certain areas of these cities, I'm told that other large cities in this continent are much the same. I hope you'll be here on a part of a carefully structured project or at least with knowledgable locals who will take good care of you and advise you well. If this is not the case, please think again! There are amazing places to visit without putting yourself in unnecessary danger. If you do hit the slums, make sure you look poor and speak the lingo fairly well. I assume you have a good grasp of Spanish (or Portuguese)! Again, if not, reconsider and even if so, the former point remains true! a mate of mine wants part of his honeymoon in Rio. is this a bad idea??
No its a great idea. Our friend here i feel is being slightly dramatic. The slums are dangerouse places if you dont know what you doing. Luckily for me this is my fourth trip there and i speak fluent portuguese. Major eye opener these places and a little bit addictive!

IF I WERE BANKSY...., by slowmo on Apr 16, 2008 16:30:24 GMT 1, I'd release only open editions from now on. People can still have their limited editions from my old releases, but realistically, why keep doing it, let the people have what they want (wouldn't sign or number them though) and I aint talking about profit, all proceeds to a charitable concern as being Banksy I would have enough money for myself by now at a guess.

IF I WERE BANKSY...., by Heavyconsumer on Apr 16, 2008 21:03:02 GMT 1, As Rich24 says, going in with a guide is fine. There are arrangements and payments in place so that you're left well alone. Trust me, I am a traveller 1st and foremost, it's my greatest passion and would not want to deprive anyone of a good experience, however to recommend that tourists enter favelas unattended is foolish at best!!! I don't care how many times you may have been before, it's dangerous. Even if you speak fluent Portuguese, if you do it with an accent (ie are not a native), it's still dangerous. Don't listen to advice from people who are flippant and carefree with your safety!!!
Rio is a stunning city that is relatively safe if you're sensible and follow local advice (especially DON'T ENTER FAVELAS WITHOUT A GUIDE), just like anywhere else in the world. Be aware of the Dengue epidmic if you're coming soon (major problem has developed over the last few months), basically use insect repellant at the moment in Rio itself. That's where the worst problem is.
Like I say, anywhere is as safe as you are willing to make it. See the world, but do it with your eye's open, that's all I'm saying. My Portuguese is fairly fluent, but I would not want to be in the wrong part of town after dark. That has never been a consideration for me in Europe or even Asia really. I've lived in large cities in 4 continents. I'm from a big city (London) and happy to spend time in foreign ones, just travel smart, that's my message.
And yes, I'd strongly recommend Rio to anyone wanting to go!

IF I WERE BANKSY...., by jh153 on Apr 28, 2008 23:11:17 GMT 1, I would also put 'Cheque book vandalism' onto a print! An amazing image that I believe was painted onto a wall the size of two billboards down around brick lane a while back and was painted over within only a few months.
