IF I WERE BANKSY...., by dave313perry on Apr 15, 2008 23:50:37 GMT 1, Heres a little thought to ponder and discuss, if you were banksy at this very moment what direction would you follow, what path would you take and what would you achieve?
open to all kind of wacky and idiotic suggestions but id like to start it off nice and sensible
I would go out to a third world country and go and live in the slums for 2-3 months, make friends, live and become as one with the people living there, at the end of it, create a small piece of artwork and give it to every person there who touched me, tell them exactly what it was, who i was, tell them what to do with it - and then leave
don't pick it to shreds i know that could cause all sorts of problems and make them a target but you get my drift
what would you do?......artwise or other

May I suggest extreme caution and common sense at all times! I live in South America (Brazil) and in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, you'd be extremely ill-advised to just wander into certain areas of these cities, I'm told that other large cities in this continent are much the same. I hope you'll be here on a part of a carefully structured project or at least with knowledgable locals who will take good care of you and advise you well. If this is not the case, please think again! There are amazing places to visit without putting yourself in unnecessary danger. If you do hit the slums, make sure you look poor and speak the lingo fairly well.
I assume you have a good grasp of Spanish (or Portuguese)! Again, if not, reconsider and even if so, the former point remains true!

I'm very reliably informed he gives to charitable causes, more money than he keeps for himself and almost the whole world knows his name! I doubt I would do a better job of being him than he is!!! Nice thought about giving to those worse-off of course. I think that's a responsibility of every affluent person and organisation.

I'd then see over a few months who it is that appreciates and buys the work and those that do have only been buying my pieces because they are Banksy. The true fans would get first offers on any release and anybody caught flipping would be removed for ever from that list forever. Small runs for true fans.

Not at all. I was there a couple of months ago and it's a fantastic city. Take the normal safety precautions and they will be fine. Going into the Favelas with a guide is great experience. Bought a bit of artwork in the Shanty town off one of the young local artists.
