Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by snakes on Jul 28, 2007 19:21:21 GMT 1, Currently no, as there is nothing that i would really want on my wall that i do not have ( only 2) as someone said earlier to me, most of Banksy's work looks better on the street than in print and there is a lot of better and certainly more affordable art out there.
..down the road who knows?
I would probally even give my last rolo to get a copy of trolley hunters!
So at that point i would concur with your 'told you so'.

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by goaty on Jul 28, 2007 20:27:28 GMT 1, If I had a SBFO I would instantly swap it for a Banksy. I think it's too easy to create a political message and make it look nice. Most of the Beejoir stuff I've seen is political, LV child, Shell etc and I haven't really seen his stuff before this. Banksy on the other hand has far less political messages especially with his early stuff, Pulp Fiction, Rats, Maid Sweeping and Queen Vic. Admittedly he's used his fame to go more political and expose it to a wider audience, but you still have Grannies type stuff that are light hearted. It's more humorous and brings a smile to your face.
So those were my thoughts.
A Banksy on my wall any day.

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by insite on Jul 29, 2007 9:30:42 GMT 1, Yes I would, I only discovered this world of prints through a realisation that Banksy made prints I could possibly own, that was quickly followed by the discovery that I was already priced out of the secondary market and after Morons the realisation that I would probably never be lucky enough to buy from source. Along the way here though I discovered loads more artists whos work I could own and appreciate so thanks to not owning a Banksy I now have work by the likes of D*face, Dolk, Amp, Cauty, Shep, Kinsey, Faile, Mantis and recently a couple of Beejoirs. Despite having a respectable collection which amounts to enough art to fill the house we're moving too I'm still not satisfied, why ?, because I still don't own a Banksy and still don't expect too. Then last week I managed to buy a SBFO, a print I've wanted almost as much as a Banksy, a print I gave up a weekend for and still missed, a print I spent days travelling for and hours queuing for in the rain for. I knew financially it would be worth more as soon as I bought it and that was part of the motivation behind the chase, not the profit but the knowledge that if I didn't buy from source I wouldn't be able too afford the 3-4X price the next day. I didn't really think that these prints would equate to a Banksy so I feel my motivation in buying was right but now I'm faced with the prospect of being able to afford a Banksy and the dilemma of what to do. I'm still too wary of ebay too just sell and reinvest but if someone offered a trade for the right piece and removed the risk of falling on my arse well I think I'd jump at it. Would I feel the same if I owned a Banksy ? probably not but we all found this forum through our appreciation of one artist and I don't think any of us would pass up on an opportunity too own a piece of his work and this is the first time I've been in a position to think that's a real possibility, I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
In considering this question I used completed ebay prices as the yardstick to relative values and that's only served too make the question even more difficult so now I'll throw this in the mix as well. Would you swop your SBFO for a couple of Matt Smalls and a Blek, or a couple of Bleks and a Faile or or or...... owning a SBFO would seem too be a shortcut to a collection at the moment and that has too be tempting.
So what am I going to do ? I'm going to get this bugger in a frame soon as, I'm going to take it to my framer and spend too much on the frame which won't fit any other print and then because I'm so tight I won't be tempted to let it go ;D, but of course this is just my opinion.

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by ABC on Jul 29, 2007 9:43:52 GMT 1, I just dont get the Shell Blood 4 Oil print, whats with it? why would you want a massive shell logo on you wall. Nothing against Beej as this is just IMO of course. I get the meaning but so what why would you want that on your wall?

Mine's not actually destined for the wall in the house, hopefully soon I'll have a small workshop again and I want it where I can see it whilst I sit at my bench. I agree it's not one for over the mantelpiece but I do love a bit of political art and sometimes feel I've lived most of my life in protest at one thing or another so to me it feels culturally relevant. I also love a good tale and the backstory on this one's a corker.

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by ABC on Jul 29, 2007 10:12:40 GMT 1, I agree it has a relevance in todays climate but the image to me is poor. I must admit though a work shop with a wall that the wife has no say is the way ahead, Ive just got a studio and feel a few things will get posted around and the mess can stay were it is without someone hoovering behind!! !!

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by insite on Jul 29, 2007 10:41:36 GMT 1, Although SBFO sprung directly from the 2nd gulf war to me the cultural relevance is as much representative of the years of protesting as just being about todays situation. For me it started with the strikes in the '80's then the anti-fascist movement, the anti-polltax union, supporting squatters and free party's until moving on site which just makes you a constant thorn in the side of government without having to try too hard ;D. Now we're about to move into a house in a nice quiet village but I'm really pleased to have discovered an art movement that to me feels representative of my views.
I think I get what you mean about the image being poor but I see it as a very good interpretation of the original spontaneous act of protest and for that reason can forgive its derivative nature.

lovely interpretation and goes for a good 99% of the work I like and own. Graffiti has it in spades, Stencils obviously (due to their long association with the politics of dissent) and outsider/lo brow art for the peoples alternative to swankety swank gallery/dealer land. Now if all the new dealers would just stop sticking ridiculous prices on these things and fuck off back to dealing pastoral scenes and welsh figurative art to the blue rinse set.. then things would be fine Can't wait for this bubble to burst !
