www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=159457682
I realize courtesy fades away as the returns on art skyrocket but I'm still curious and want to understand a little better for myself:
I've always collected under the premise that if I needed to sell that I would first go back to the dealer I bought a piece from (which may or may not have happened in this case- i'm merely guessing the latter). Similarly, if I chose to go to auction, I would consider the bridge to the primary dealer burned forevermore. Is this how most people collect or does that sound foreign and/or stupid to most on this site?
To be fair, I'm not passing judgement on the seller as any number of economic situations could force any of us to sell our art, but seeing a painting that is only 20 months old of this size with one owner who purchased from the primary dealer just got my brain wondering aloud. I'm curious if other buyers internationally would feel obligated to at least discuss with their dealer before punting at auction or not? Likewise, would you presume that the dealer would never sell you another painting if you went around them to auction?

Sale ends today, by darjeeling on Apr 22, 2008 5:16:05 GMT 1, It's part of the business and 20 months seems like a long term hold in the current market imo.
But I'll say, when you're about to make a half a friggin million dollar profit on something, I would care less about hurting Laz's greedy little feelings. And with the amount of work that shows up in the secondary market, it's hardly as if you couldn't get your hands on another piece anyway. And what are the chances that even this person has a shot of getting another Banksy from Laz at this point. Could be slim regardless of the auction. Me, I'd take the money and friggin run baby.
