so if for example your after a morons sepia for about ยฃ 3,500 you'd get clobbered for about ยฃ 600

I just bought a print from the US for ยฃ1,600 and paid nearly ยฃ300 in VAT

Buying from USA, by Michael Jacob on Jul 25, 2007 13:17:19 GMT 1, DONT do it as a gift, unless youre willing to walk away and loss everything if it gets lost or damaged. I know VAT sucks, but knowing its fully insured is worth it!

Buying from USA, by sand on Jul 25, 2007 13:27:41 GMT 1, Perhaps you could ask the seller to mark the item down as 'personal belongings' on the customs form and thus you can avoid paying customs fees?
My mate did it once on a expensive purchase form the US and completely avoided paying any extra fees..
Worth a go?!

Buying from USA, by poofly on Jul 25, 2007 13:30:25 GMT 1, All this VAT & Import stuff is bollocks.
Get it shipped with a proper courier (not USPS or Royal Mail, But UPS or Fedex or DHL) and let them know that its a collactable print and for your own use, and they can get it through with minimal charges.
I just got a signed CND from the States (but the wife ain't happy so I got to sell it again) and when UPS saw it said $8500 value on the side, they called me up, asked me what it was and if it really was worth that much and they got it through customs for ยฃ225. So this VAT & Import Duties stuff is balls. It's collectable artwork and that has different rules to just general goods.
I suggest first speak to HMC&E, and also with your courier, but if done properly your fees will be bugger all (well compared to what you might think it is)
Do your research, cus it'll be worth it....

Buying from USA, by tadghostal on Jul 25, 2007 18:30:39 GMT 1, I've learned that "posters" are taxed at a much higher rate that "fine art." Considering Banksy is now widely accepted in galleries, has been added to some museums, and sells for truck loads of cash at auction---I'd call it fine art, and be happy with the 5% or whatever VAT is for those goods.

You may get lucky with that canvas and not have to pay quite as much. I'm pretty sure that Originals do not get taxed as much as limited edition prints.
I'd like to know a little bit more about how this all works, like any great law I'm sure there are several loopholes.
I read on here somewhere that there is a way to get a large portion of the 17.5% back. Has anyone had any success with this?

Buying from USA, by bobbymeachamjr on Jul 26, 2007 5:07:02 GMT 1, I think with the proper arrangements everybody would be very happy.
1. Fedex priority intl (1-3 days) for $76 from nyc. As good as it gets. (or choose next flight/next day - im not sure how much this is) 2. Pack a tube (ie. skinny pow tube) inside one of the thick wide width ones. Fill with tissue and the print is crazy safe. 3. Declare as "gift" with low value.
Believe me the 0.1% chance something can go awry is worth saving 18% on a multi thousand dollar purchase.

Buying from USA, by tadghostal on Jul 26, 2007 10:14:29 GMT 1, Take it that final step, and insert it into a FedEx triangle tube, and you're golden. That is, if you're willing to risk it, regardless of how minor that risk is.

Agree that the fedex giant toblerone is the ultimate for sending prints safely.
