early advice on gallery overcharging?, by dundermifflin on Feb 17, 2008 22:12:52 GMT 1, I recently bought a print from a well known and, i think, well respected London gallery that is in the gallery section of the forum. they agreed to a non-Vat price as I'm in Australia. however, it seems (according to my credit card statement) that they have charged me VAT. I have emailed them several times to ask them why and to try and sort it out and they refuse to get back to me even though they were quick to respond when negotiating the print purchase deal. the only email i received was to say they had sent the print. I have also tried calling, but due to time differences i never seem to be able to get a hold of them.
the advice i'm looking for is, if they still refuse to respond to my request, am i able to put in a chargeback request on my credit card even if they have actually sent the print? the VAT amount is substantial when converted to Australian dollars and I'm not just going to let it ride because they will not respond.
obviously it's a tricky one because if I receive the print then they have essentially done their part but they have overcharged me so i think i have a valid reason to ask for a chargeback.
anyone been in this situation?

early advice on gallery overcharging?, by dundermifflin on Feb 17, 2008 22:58:49 GMT 1, yeah, as i said in my initial post, i have tried calling but never get through. i think i may be trying too early due to the annoying timezone differences. their site does not have opening times on it so i have no idea when i need to call.
yes, I have a copy of the original email where they agreed to pay the non-Vat price.
I'll keep trying anyway and see what happens.

early advice on gallery overcharging?, by dotdot on Feb 17, 2008 23:25:29 GMT 1, keep us posted on this - this so called gallery requires to answer in full your appropriate query.
the issue surrounding posting art across timezones and between countires continues to cause concern and consternation between people both on the forum and people who run galleries.
we could do with a faq on this.

I looked in the gallery section on this forum and couldn't find a single one of the bunch! ;D

early advice on gallery overcharging?, by dundermifflin on Feb 18, 2008 22:57:14 GMT 1, they finally got back to me. apparently they didn't get my emails about the price discrepancy. strange when they were getting my previous emails quite fine. anyway.. i'm a trusting guys and will give them the benefit of the doubt. although they are still saying they charged me the lower price even though my bank statement is saying otherwise.
I don't plan on naming names because they are at least replying now and doing their best to help. they seem like a decent bunch. probably just a simple mistake.

early advice on gallery overcharging?, by darjeeling on Feb 19, 2008 2:00:28 GMT 1, Could it be a currency conversion charge showing up on your CC bill? This is a good reminder for all of us to get a written invoice PDF emailed to you before paying out. Best of luck.

early advice on gallery overcharging?, by dundermifflin on Feb 19, 2008 4:23:23 GMT 1, no i don't think so. my bank always shows the currency conversion charges as separate to the actual transaction. plus the discrepancy between the prices is in the hundreds of dollars so it's too big a difference for it to be charges or differing exchange rates.
