Silky, is this Forum a Flea Market?, by jamesreeve5 on Feb 18, 2008 11:13:00 GMT 1, Silky, it's hard to ignore the surplus of "artists" and "galleries" promoting themselves on the main forum lately. I know that everyone is eager to make a quick buck flogging their shit on this board, but it is an eye sore for the rest of us.

I am neither an artist nor a gallery, I hear what you are saying after all this is the Banksy forum, however if we only spoke about Banksy on here then there would be nothing to say from month to month! If you are not interested in a thread then you don't have to read it, I for one am interested in what the street artists have to offer, can't be arsed with looking through 10 different forums to find out whats new! All here in one place, if I'm not interested in a thread then I don't contribute!
I noticed your comment on the Jef Aerosol thread, and I would just like to add that Jef has been an active member of the forum, an artist who offers opinion and advice on a regular basis. He has his first show in the UK so why shouldn't he promote it and why shouldn't we offer our support to him and other artists who get actively involved on this forum. I would also be interested to know just how much money these artists have helped raise through donations etc!
Not being shitty, but give em a break!!!

I have no problem with other artists being discussed, just "artists" that use the forum, particularly the main forum, as a marketplace.

Most of these guys struggle to make a living, if their stuff is good enough then give them a break.

Silky, is this Forum a Flea Market?, by daley on Feb 18, 2008 11:58:37 GMT 1, If you take away all the artists and galleries promoting their 'shit'. Then take away all the posters on here that share the news of new shows, prints and originals - then there wouldn't be that much left!
I've had loads of heads up for new artists names on here that I wouldn't probably of heard of otherwise. What's wrong with that?
It's all good...

I quite enjoy new discoveries which i would otherwise not hear of, if it where not for this forum

Silky, is this Forum a Flea Market?, by stuey09 on Feb 18, 2008 14:04:32 GMT 1, In fairness to James, I think he has a point. Most of the artists and galleries contribute to the forums in a very constructive way. Others post very rarely and use the forums purely as a shop window. It would be better if they offered opinions in the same way that other forum members do, or at least discussed their art. It's called contributing. It's only a small minority, but on that premise James does have a point. It just wasn't well made.

Silky, is this Forum a Flea Market?, by finsburyparkranger on Feb 18, 2008 14:06:06 GMT 1, It is ironic that a 'banksy' forum now is pretty much nothing more than a market place though. Its a shame I think. It used to be much better this time last year when people talked a lot more about the wider world.

Everyone is guilty of starting a thread that is nothing to do with Banksy! That would be impossible to police. As long as there is interest who cares?!

I didn't think you would. Street art does not exist only in a sales bubble for aging Tories. Its attached to the most exciting social, political and artistic movement for ages. Discussing that a bit might be nice.

Silky, is this Forum a Flea Market?, by daveanthony28 on Feb 18, 2008 14:48:21 GMT 1, James, I understand where you are coming from but my point of view is that I find these posts quite interesting - yes some are just dreary pr excercises but have enjoyed watching some of the members having a go at art. if people choose to buy at a reasonable forum friendly price, it will cover the persons next attempt etc & so on. As long as these people keep it respectable & don't automatically begin demanding anything much above cost it' all good.
As for Artist's like Jeff, Rourke & co - all bring something to the forum & their work is quality & also affordable if you like the image.

thats bizarre, coming from someone who has installed a peer to peer sales platform. reading down the board you can find threads about street artists from portugal, brazil, miami, finland, it is quite diverse & indicitive of the 'wider world', but the most prevelant topic of conversation at the moment is sales, caused in the main by the oversupply of prints last year, a residue from the enthusiasm of the members of all forums from last year, the encouragement of the f5 and buying anything that came on the market, resulting in a glut of unwanted prints, & credit card bills, a kind of reaping what you sow effect, if you like.
