precautions when purchasing?, by dundermifflin on Feb 13, 2008 9:30:51 GMT 1, i'm new to this buying/swapping print lark... I'm just wondering what precautions people take when buying from someone off a forum like this one? Ebay, although pretty shite, at least has some inbuilt help to buyers (feedback, etc) but just buying a relatively expensive print off some random person is obviously a risk. what precautions do people take when purchasing?
(sorry if this has been discussed before. the search feature never seems to work for me)

precautions when purchasing?, by streetgirl on Feb 13, 2008 10:12:20 GMT 1, Howdo!
I'm sure there are more definitive pearls of wisdom to be had, however, I follow a few simple rules:
1) Gauge the sellers rep on the board, you get to know those with a good rep vs those with a not so good rep. Now if you're new that's of no use to you, but the way I got around that was by PM'ing some of the key members on this site who know the place like the back of their hands, (sorry for naming but) people like stuey09, crackawacka, finsburyparkranger etc should know what they're talking about (I can't believe I've just put those names in that sentence!)
2) Ask them if they have sold to any other members and who they are so you can contact for a reference.
3) Put a thread up asking members to confirm the print run, colour, numbering, stamps used, any specifics with regard to paper used, markings on the print etc.
4) Ask them for provenance - a name to check with the gallery or an email copy of their receipt.
5) Ensure you've got clear images of the piece you are purchasing, there's nothing worse than receiving a less than perfect piece...and that way any damage 'in the mail' you have a reference.
6) Other than that, ensure you have relevant details about the person (a contact number, email etc) and then really it's a matter of making a good judgement.
I've never had a bad transaction on here having done my due diligence.
Ultimately, you should get a feel for the seller and how forthcoming you they are with requests for information, either directly or via other people.
Hope that helps a little.

Great advice, not leaving a lot to chance if you follow those rules. I have had no problems with deals done to forum members.

precautions when purchasing?, by dundermifflin on Feb 14, 2008 21:44:23 GMT 1, sorry to bump this up again but i'm just wondering, what if the person is not on a forum? I have been dealing with a person through www.Expressobeans for a D*Face print. they are a new user on EB and I've also noticed they are a new Paypal user (non-verified). My plan was to get a phone number and address and then call them up just to verify they are who they say they are, etc. not fool proof obviously but its about the best i can think of. does this sound like a good plan or are there any other steps i can take?
