Modern Design Thread, by Harveyn on Jan 25, 2008 12:59:09 GMT 1, I happened upon yet another hijacked thread which had branched onto Modern Design. Chairs again and one of my favourite subjects (dumpsuk's ebay auction for his excellent Neate).
So I thought it would be nice to start a thread were people could openly talk about their design obsessions. I know its not art but it is sort of related.
Anything goes not just chairs. Throw in a bit of architecture not just interiors.
So seeing as I missed the chair one here is one of my chairs I have not posted in any of the previous chair threads (in the right hand corner Chair One on concrete base by Konstantin Grcic). Like all my chairs built for comfort.
and I will be relaxing on this one this evening with a glass of red wine staring at my latest art addition. Pictures later.

Modern Design Thread, by Dead Elvis on Jan 25, 2008 14:35:10 GMT 1, For those in the States, Modern Dose is a great outlet for chairs, or just about anything modern for that matter...
www.moderndose.com/index.php?cPath=21_29
They sell reproductions, but they are reasonably priced and the quality is superb. There is absolutely no difference in my walnut Eames plywood lounge from the one I sat in in a Herman Miller showroom... ;D

Therer is a ton of differences from the materials to the build quality to the dimentions. It's all wrong. Don't buy one ever. Infact don't even buy a new 'real' one either, buy a vintage old one, it's be cheaper and in rosewood (which you cannot get any more as it's on the endagered list) and it'll have that sense of history and wonderful patina that takes decades to achieve. For a good one with a foot stool be prepaped to pay from 2k min
They are a minefield to buy though so would be happy to give advice on buying these.

Modern Design Thread, by artyfarty on Jan 25, 2008 15:09:43 GMT 1, I wouldn't argue with Frankie Re: Eames loungers. He and his lover Graham Mancha are two of the UK's leading experts on the chairs. Frankie's missus has gotten so fed up with their long phone calls into the wee small hours that she has hijacked his collection of Adam Neate originals until he can cool his ardour. You didn't hear it from me though, OK?

Nice to know your name on the forum, I think I've worked out your ebay name too! Now that would be a good discussion

Ha, that was my point...cheap alternative. Can't speak for the lounge with ottoman, although I am MORE than familiar with a mid 70's in rosewood , but I was referring to the LCW knock-off. Dimensions are almost spot-on, give or take .25 inch, and your ass cannot tell the difference. Good luck finding a used LCW for $275 shipped, or a mint original for less than a signed color trolleys...

Well in that case, just photocopy your next banksy print and save a few quid. You're nan will never know the difference.

Here is my mint original, Payed about ยฃ500 for it although it's worth more. It's pre Herman Miller, made by Evans c1950. I think you'd be lucky if your ยฃ125 chair with free shipping will last past next xmas

Nice chair, I have one in storage with the original base. But here is my Eames 'PAW' chair. A very rare 1st generation (made by Zenith, not Herman Miller) with the rope edge and on a swivel mechanism. These are super rare!

Heres one of my favourite modern purchases by a guy called Julian Mayor. I bought the first one he produced of this and he signed it for me. Its meant to be like a crumpled piece of paper. This was before he started exhibiting in Milan.
