Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by James Smith 77 on Jan 12, 2008 6:04:27 GMT 1, I recently sold a $600 print to a UK buyer. I am located in the US and insured the print for full value. Now the buyer is complaing to me claiming that I shouldn't have insured it because now he will have to pay the VAT. He says he feels conned and that I should have warned him of the VAT. The US doesn't have such VAT laws = I am not 100% familiar with them. Do you guys think this is my fault?

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by fartofthestate on Jan 12, 2008 8:55:05 GMT 1, Import TAX and VATs suck, when I send a print I find its easier to double tube it with bubble wrap and put it as a low value gift with trackable post so no one gets stung.

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by Octopus UK on Jan 12, 2008 9:20:32 GMT 1, Some people are not happy paying tax but they are still happy for the state to educate their children, keep them healthy and keep them safe. I don't think they have any real cause for complaint, it's not your job to educate them about their country's tax laws.

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by seidbereit on Jan 12, 2008 14:58:58 GMT 1, Sounds like the fella you sold to is being incredibly childish James and just because he wasn't aware of the VAT doesn't mean he should have been aware of it. As graeme501 says, he dropped the ball, not you. Ignorance of the law is no defence in any case so I wouldn't give the "conned" thing another second's thought if I were you. You're certainly not at fault for anything.

id rather have the piece of mind of full insurance than try 2 dodge the taxman

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by seidbereit on Jan 12, 2008 15:11:57 GMT 1, Sounds to me as though he was probably very happy to have it sent insured but only discovered upon receiving it that the insurance would be his downfall and now chooses to cite the fact that it was insured as the sender's mistake. I'd just ignore him, it's 100% his problem and noone elses.

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by bonesy on Jan 12, 2008 15:12:38 GMT 1, I recently had an Italian buyer bring up the same issue (but in a suprised polite way). I told him it was out of my control and a percentage of all prints (packages) getting imported into his country get hit with it.

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by buffin on Jan 12, 2008 18:25:16 GMT 1, There's an explanation about VAT issues at the head of the forum subjects. If you read it what jumps out is that is a very complex area. James you cannot be expected to know everything about overseas tax laws. Its up to the buyer to do his own research. Buyer beware!

well if that is the case he is a prize p*ick. By law he has to pay any vat upon importation. If he asks you to insure it for a lesser amount so he can evade the vat he is asking you to conspire in an act of fraud.
If he makes any further complaints inform him of this and say that you shall forward all of his correspondence to Her Majesty's Customs and that should shut him up!

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by top on Jan 12, 2008 18:52:35 GMT 1, The buyer sounds like he didn't know himself, but it is the buyers problem, not yours..
I got stung 'once'..i al ways ask it to be sent as a gift - however, if it is a costly piece I would rather do it safely and pay me dues..

Should UK buyers be aware of a VAT?, by curiousgeorge on Jan 12, 2008 21:02:47 GMT 1, If the print was from the UK in the first place and VAT at the first sale(in the uk)
No futher vat/duty applies:) The tax man was quite happy to tell me 1000's of parcels every year are incorrectly and they leave it to the importer to aruge the case/prove VAT has already been paid.
Ask the buyer what he would if it sent with a much lower value and arrived damaged?? Tell him to live and learn!!
