I need advice on getting a piece authenticated..., by seidbereit on Jan 8, 2008 17:06:34 GMT 1, I just received a piece today, a nice piece of alternative street art ;D (ebay 270186836762) and now that I have it in front of me I'm even more convinced it's genuine than I was when I could just stare at zoomed up photos on my monitor during the auction.
When I bought it I was taking a calculated risk (of sorts) and the bidding didn't go anything like as high as I thought so I think it may turn out to be an absolute steal at 255 quid even though it's not in the greatest possible condition.
Can anyone give me some advice about how to go about getting it looked at by an expert to have it authenticated?
Many thanks in advance to any helpers out there! ;D

I need advice on getting a piece authenticated..., by seidbereit on Jan 8, 2008 17:27:19 GMT 1, wow dont know much about lowry. you obviously do. My only advice is to get it to a valuer at one of the auction houses or check online there must be a lowry expert that you could send a picture to, good luck if it is and hope you get better help than this
Cheers... I considered taking it to the Lowry gallery next time I go to Manchester to visit my ma but I have a sneaking suspicion they'll tell me it's a load of sh**e and then have it on the wall the minute my back's turned. ;D
Are any of the forum members professionally involved with any experts? To be honest I'm not so much interested in a valuation as a first stop, but am primarily curious to find out if it just is what it looks like it is, i.e. whether it can be dated on the basis of the paper and type of pencil or some such wizardry.

Already thought about that (see two posts up) but the idea doesn't appeal to me for some reason. I'll have a search on the web for experts in the field but if I can't come up with something more independent, lets say, then I may just have to do that.

I need advice on getting a piece authenticated..., by nickc on Jan 9, 2008 11:21:09 GMT 1, My dad sold about 5 or 6 Lowry pencil drawings at Sothebys a few years back so I grew up with them around the house. I'm not saying this isn't a genuine as I am no expert but all I can say is what I know about ours: 1) They were all signed in the bottom right hand corner 2) The were his full sig, not L.S.L 3) The L's looked very different to those on this piece.
However, saying all that, it's possible that this could be a preliminary sketch of another piece he was doing. Have you checked out any reference books to see if there is anything similar?

Hi nick and thanks for all that, very interesting. I have four ltd edition pencil signed Lowry prints at home (all full sigs) and all of them are signed in the bottom left, looking at the prints of the paintings themselves he has signed them both in the bottom left or bottom right, so I have a feeling the position of the signature is not so important overall (a bit like some of the Applause prints I've seen ;D)
Looking at the L's themselves: the hand written ones on the prints and the printed ones in the paintings all look slightly different from onanother and at least two of the handwritten ones (on different prints) look extremely similar to the ones on the little grubby sketch I have so again I'm a bit unsure. The closest match I've found for the L.S.L. is the lettering on the suitcase of the "Man Lying on a Wall".
I've got some free time on my hands today so I intent to trawl around to see if there's a painting of a similar scene anywhere. As you say this very much looks like a quick sketched piece rather than something that was ever intended to be a finished frameable drawing and the condition of it will probably mean it'll never be worth very much but as I'm a huge fan of LSL's I'd just be pleased (over the moon) if I found out it was real.
Again many thanks for that info (+).

I need advice on getting a piece authenticated..., by manchestermike on Jan 9, 2008 15:56:49 GMT 1, I have seen this seller selling other items all initialled or nom-de-plumes before - however they keep all auctions private so you can't see feedback. A few months back they had a bunch of Basquiat "drawings" all signed with his street name... I hate to say this, but I think you might be right... if you take it to be authenticated then you have to expect the negative response. There is more and more of these types of sales going on... I'd just say, be careful

Who do you think might be right MM?
Cheers for the info on the seller though - I'll add him to my watch list to see what else he finds in bins

I need advice on getting a piece authenticated..., by redfred on Jan 9, 2008 16:40:18 GMT 1, I have a signed limited edition Lowry print and that is signed in full on the bottom left, probably not much help in this case but there you go. I have also looked at some of these Lowry sketches which crop up fairly regularly and I do know a lot of them are just initialed, and I have read that authenticity is very difficult to prove probably due to the simplistic form in which they have been undertaken. Good luck anyway.
