geeks of the world unite!!, by lesbianwednesdays on Dec 10, 2007 23:36:25 GMT 1, right, im getting seriously pissed off with my vaio laptop, and more so windows vista. i'm not the sharpest when it comes to all the techno mumbo jumbo, so go easy on me. what i want to know is should i cross over to the lightside and get a macbook? my mum has an imac that i've used at odd times but haven't really explored too far. i want something i can use to edit all my dvds of my little boy on to something more concise, sort photos, music and watch dvds. i'll use my vaio for any downloading and day to day stuff but what i want to know is if it is worth spunking out ยฃ750 on one or should i just go get some help with this bag of sh*t?
all arguments, pro and con would be very much appreciated, also some guides of what capabilities the macbook has that i could untap that would make it even more of viable option?
thanks in advance, rupert

does a mac not come with a bundle of class software? specifically, i would also like to be able to convert dvds to mp4 and rip them to my psp for watching on the move, quicktime can do this easily i'm told?

geeks of the world unite!!, by reados on Dec 10, 2007 23:46:33 GMT 1, i have a pc which i use mainly for work, but for my home computers i have always had macs, i find pc's so much more complicated and they are plagued by s**t off the internet, until recently i have never had a problem with a mac. I have had 4 now over the past 16 years, only one had a problem, the last one before the one im on now, that was an i book and it lasted three years without a single issue, i have just bought a 24inch imac and i have never been so pleased with a product. Its is so quiet, its fast and the screen is massive, my 5 and 9 year olds are let loose on it and they can work it better than my missus ;D
Simplicity is the key, you'll never go back
hope it helps a bit

hello lee, my original copy of vista became corrupt and no longer works, so i put a clean version on only to find the corrupt one exists behind it. i want to format the hard-drive and start again but sony don't give you recovery discs, they sell them to you for ยฃ30 though. my bro has been saying for weeks he'll sort it but i don't see him that often and don't want to rely on other people to get me out the sh*t. basically my hard drive is clogged up with crap that doesn't need to be there.
i don't use my pc for work, only for pleasure. i can't work out any kind of dvd editing type software on here and i know there is some on here somewhere.....
reados, that definitely helps mate, cheers for your views.
is it true you cannot get a virus on a mac? also, i have sky broadband, does anyone know if i can still log on through it wirelessly? it's a moot point if i can't.

Quicktime can convert just about anything to mp4 although you may need some shareware like mac the ripper to get the movie off the dvd originally - not sure about that as I haven't done it for a while.

Hi... first off: absolutely macs can get viruses, just with only 15 (yeah, yeah... I know) people using them no one bothers to write them... that said they have started popping up recently apparently. Wireless should be fairly simple with any machine nowadays... whether it be PC, Mac, MP3 player, picture frame, washing machine, fridge freezer, whatever - ok, maybe not just yet on the washing machine?
I know exactly what you mean about the recovery discs, nearly fell into that hole myself, I'm a dev so managed to sort it another way... there is a Vaio utility that allows you to build your own and (sorry, this is gonna hurt) you really should have used it before you did anything. But it is only a ยฃ30 fix... so maybe worth taking the shot to sort it out? What model Vaio is it, if it is the same that I happen to have I may be able to send you some discs, but it may not work (wouldnt be surprised if they have tied the licensing into a serial number somewhere!). Alternatively, you installed a new version of vista... where was this from and was there not an option to do a "clean install"? you will often have to run the new install from a cold boot rather than from inside windows... if it was your bro that did this, then tell him to do a clean install. It may be that the old OS is simply in a folder named "Windows_Old" or something simialr.. in which case just delete it, I would confirm this with your brother first though... if the two OS's are sharing folders then a clean install is totally advisable.
If you are worried about the performance of the thing vis-a-vis DV editing, then I would suggest upgrading the memory to 2gb (if it isnt already, and more if it will take it, which I doubt) and also creating a SWAP partition (can talk you through this), keeps Vista fairly quick... I use a fairly bottom of the range Vaio and don't have any issues at all and spend 24/7 on it, doing most of everything, games, media, internet, office developement, running test environments, virtualisation so and so forth.
My own tuppence on the Mac situation is this: if you are a casual user and use IBM compatible PC's at work with MS products then you're better off sticking with a PC at home. You'll be able to play games without thinking about it, run office apps without thinking about it, so on and so forth... I know Macs have made huge strides in this, but frankly for the casual user: life is too short... you just wanna turn it on and go play. Vista Home has a movie editing suite that I, personally, feel is more than suitable for home movies. As for encoding movies for PSP's... frankly if you have the original, just use a (Removed) site to dl the PSP version - call it a backup if the secret police come knocking at 2am, otherwise I am sure Macs can re-encode just as well a PC... file compression is all software side so neither should have a particular advantage over each other on the final file (I may be wrong here), but as you plan to play it back on a PSP I doubt a fantastic bitrate is a high priority, file size is the main consideration... there may be a difference in the encoding (I'm not big on codecs), but I am sure both PC and Mac markets have advantages and disadvantages in this task and it would come down to the items of hardware doing the encoding... schedule them for overnight and in the morning they're done anyway, both types of machine will use lots of resources to do this task.
So it really comes down to about a ยฃ60 outlay for the memory and recovery discs... or a new macbook?
Sorry lots in here, so happy to go to PM's or discuss further... and flame on macdaddies..!

geeks of the world unite!!, by leehambly on Dec 11, 2007 0:38:45 GMT 1, Should have said... the DV software is "Windows Movie Maker", which is as good as it is really... you can import clips, cut them up and put them back together again, merge them with others, overlay other soundtracks... has some transition effects and text schtuff, all in a fairly friendly storyboard format.
It won't help make a film that'd win an Oscar for Special Effects but would be more than fine for home movies. Artistically, best to stay away from the flashy stuff anyway, imho, especially those crash zooms, make me feel ill.

geeks of the world unite!!, by lesbianwednesdays on Dec 11, 2007 11:19:07 GMT 1, cheers lee, a lot to go on there. you're right, i do have a two versions, one listed as windows_old but it won't allow to delete any of it. my brother has told me to leave it be and he'll sort it for me, the trouble is i'm too impatient and he never explains how/where i went wrong, just sorts it and says 'there you go'.
the mac would be a bit of an extravagence, granted, my logic is though that i've had this vaio for a year now (vgn-fe31h) and have tried various ways to achieve what i want with it but with no luck. the vaio i had before this lasted 6 weeks and i've had a new keyboard installed on this one already. i'm hoping that all the media friendly applications on a mac would be of more use to me, i run itunes already on this. i bought this with windows xp media edition, that went when i got my free upgrade to vista and frankly it was the worst thing i ever did. that said, vista is here to stay so i need to get up to speed, i just find it a headache trying to achieve certain things on this, re. video editing, and just wanted to source opinion on what the mac offers over this.
i will be keeping the vaio too if i do buy the mac, so it's not one or the other, just will the mac fulfill what i want from it. or do i need to get to a muppets 'how to' class? LOL!
+1 lee, cheers.

my biggest complain with mac is the DVD player is region locked - (you're allowed to change it 5 times only) so you can only play a certain kind of DVD of a fixed region. Who da hell does that anymore? it's the most retarded thing on the mac, otherwise it's simple, fast, and has most stuff you need (except games... mac sucks at games)

You'll get the same hardware constraint on a PC too, but like the virus issue, more users = more ways to do things (ie: a crack or hack will appear on the net).
For me and many others, Mac are still "design PC's" - I know this is so last year (PC's are just as good and often better now ), but it is the reality. For the casual user a cheap PC (proper cheap, too, whether desktop or laptop) is more than capable of everything they will ever want to do... you could run a small country from one.
Bubble.. it was only a couple of years back that Movie companies were using tricked out Atari ST's and Amigas (really tricked i admit!).. they use whatever is good for them... RudeBoy wants something to put together home videos of his kid, the hardest part of the process will be happening in camera, after that, give it a year or two and MP4 players and mobile phones will be able to edit them together! Personally I think, in this case, it would be a total waste of money.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a die-hard PC advocate, it is just a simple case of the right tool for the job and, imho, RudeBoy has the right tool for the job, it is just a little bent at the moment... straighten it out and good to go!
you can always run windows on the new macs should you need to... it's called bootcamp my biggest complain with mac is the DVD player is region locked - (you're allowed to change it 5 times only) so you can only play a certain kind of DVD of a fixed region. geeks of the world unite!!, by leehambly on Dec 11, 2007 16:44:56 GMT 1, I know... meet mac advocates all the time, as a contractor come into contact with allsorts(!)... I'm sure they are great, I really would like to see a Mac go up against an Alienware PC (or similar)... Mac's are definitely good at one thing... Public Relations. Everything "Apple" is always innovative and groundbreaking, even though other companies have been doing it for years... and someone at the beeb is defintely on the Apple payroll... I would like an inquiry into that relationship.

If he had any sense (I know he's got the money) he'd have one motherf**ker('scuse the language) of an Alienware PC... well, probably both, one for each foot.

geeks of the world unite!!, by lesbianwednesdays on Dec 11, 2007 17:53:54 GMT 1, some excellent advice from you all, lee i'm sure i'm owed an invoice by now from you
could i just get the thoughts of the many mac users on here as to why they use a mac and not a pc? what kind of features or applications do they use on their mac that they would otherwise struggle with using a pc. i hear a lot of people saying that the mac is more straightforward to use etc but i'm more interested in specific qualities it has you can't live without, if you love it then tell me why you love it.
sorry to harp on but as i said earlier, it's not exactly a case of one or the other but more so is a mac worth laying out the money for if it's not got that much more than a pc has to offer.
ta.
