Ahh.. those were the days... no security hassles when travelling, tax breaks left, right and centre, smoking in public, more than a few pounds lighter and certainly more than a bit more hair on top... not to mention the prospect of picking up a stack of really cheap originals from some Bristol rat tagger... I'm sold.. take me back now!

geeks of the world unite!!, by johnas on Dec 11, 2007 19:32:32 GMT 1, i'll start by saying that mac or pc, i'm sure that they're like for like - there's very little a pc can't do in comparison with a mac, and vice versa. The reason i moved to Mac's though were for the very issues you're having RBR. I was constantly getting frustrated and annoyed with my PC's performance and trying to 'fix' it by myself, without a technical bone in my body, just added to the annoyance.
that's why now, i couldn't go back to PC after using macs for 4 yrs. All my memories of PCs are of crashes, operating issues, lost work, frozen screens aaarrrggghhhhh. Since moving to mac, i've had no experiences of this at all. The best way i can put it is that 'Macs... just... work'
I find they're so well supported too. If there's something I don't understand (daily occurrence due to my stupidity) or can't work out how/what to do, whether it's software or hardware based, I found there's a wealth of info on the apple support pages and forums, so much so, that I can find the answers to my questions easily.

geeks of the world unite!!, by corblimeylimey on Dec 11, 2007 19:41:54 GMT 1, I'm a mac boy, so my biased view is get a mac.
It will do everything you said you want to do, dvd, photos, web, music etc etc just with the built in Apple software.
It may cost more than a PC but apart from a well built, well designed machine you do get the excellent Mac operating system and iLife08 www.apple.com/uk/ilife/

Yep, iLife is included with all macs.
P.S. if you go for an iMac don't get extra RAM from Apple (my mate recently bought one and I put the extra RAM in it for him, but any idiot can do it)eg iMac 20inch 2.4GHz for ยฃ949 it comes with only 1 gig of RAM (or you could go for the 24inch model for ยฃ200 more) an extra 1 gig of RAM from Apple will cost an extra ยฃ90 you can buy the right RAM and fit it yourself for just ยฃ17.61 at www.crucial.com/uk/

Possibly... and this is where Apple have won their biggest battle in public relations, I feel most people buy an iPod because they have been told it is simply the best, most innovative and groundbreaking item on the market and it has become a must-have item. This, simply, is not true.
I swear by the Archos range... the AV400 was my first, which totally blew me away and also have a 604wifi now which blows away the ipod, nowhere near as flash to look at but damn do they do some clever and highly useful things... I suppose they are at the far end of what an MP3 player is though. It has some drawbacks but it fits my usage very well.
My 604 is now the hub of the whole house frankly.... everything runs through it, it was a last minute airport purchase and sat in the bag on a shelf for 6 months totally unopened... which was a little daft in retrospect. It replaces the need for many other items of hardware: MP3 player, video recorder, media PC and will play files from a USB stick, which is very nice.

geeks of the world unite!!, by krazy on Dec 12, 2007 8:04:33 GMT 1, I have a Sony too, and have had heaps of problems with it... but I've now got it working just the way I want (with Vista too).
If the recovery disks from Lee don't work (they might be serialised to the hardware.. who knows). You can build your own for free. They are pre-installed on every Vaio in a hidden partition... so no amount of reformatting is going to get rid of them .
I think you can enter a 'recovery' state on boot-up without the disks too.. but I can't remember how. Just download the app from the Vaio site and build your own disks.
I've got a Mac and a Vaio... and they both have their pro's and con's. The biggest pain for the Mac is the lack of everyday apps for it, and the crappy email programs and productivity (office) tools. I'm a heavy Office 2007 user, so am stuck with a PC for now (until Office 2008 is released on the Mac!).
OSX Leopard is pretty cool too... but it definitely has it's 'glitches' that need to be worked out.
Good luck!

Good point Lee - when I got my last mp3 player I was pretty determined to get anything but an ipod as I didn't want to pay more for less features. I read loads and loads of reviews and did end up getting the ipod - and am very happy with it. There is something lovely about the design & interface I think if you are a very tecchie person there's usually a better option than the apple (mac or ipod) If you just want something that looks and feels nice and you don't want to have to tinker round too much - then maybe the apple - but you will pay more!

Youre not wrong Paulah, had to read the manual a few times to even understand the actual capabilities of the thing and what that actually meant in terms of usage, but got there in the end.
One feature they actually removed in later releases, which was totally cool, was being able to control the AV400 with Yahoo! calendar... so you could leave it at home and program it, from the office or on holiday, to record the telly... fairly limited usage on that one frankly, but great feature!

that's the beauty of an ipod - no manual!
krazy, cheers for the tips, i'm going to a gig tonight at wembley with my brother so i can hassle him there and back on the train about it all also, i don't really use office, my wife does though and microsoft works so i'll keep the vaio for her.
still not 100% sure what to do, i'm very tempted but will just have to see how the money goes, thanks so much for all who've got involved and helped me with this, lee especially - cheers!
i won an xbox 360 on virgin radio over the weekend so i might start a thread tomorrow about that, already got my eye on colin mcrae dirt. ;D
