Laz or Deitch?, by saltandiron on Dec 5, 2007 21:24:35 GMT 1, Deitch has been around since the 80s, curated some good stuff, helped the careers of lots of great artists. Experience wins out every time.
p.s. James, who did you go for?

Laz or Deitch?, by ricosg11 on Dec 5, 2007 21:30:37 GMT 1, HA, that is a joke right? Deitch one of the top contemporary galleries in the world vs The worst career management I have ever seen. Everyday I hope and pray Banksy makes it out alive.
If you disagree read collecting contemporary by adam lindemann and then tell me what you think.
Ha Deitch vs Laz. That was funny.
If Deitch is willing to work with you, you are something pretty special.

Laz or Deitch?, by saltandiron on Dec 5, 2007 21:45:42 GMT 1, In case people aren't aware of who Dietch is here's his blurb in Artreview's top 100 most powerful this year:
54: Jeffrey Dietch
Jeffrey Dietch has an experienced nose for the young hot centre of the art scene. The gallerist and art advisor has long been involved wit the careers of such urban art luminaries as Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, whose estate he handles. His stable of artists at Deitch Projects reflects an investment in those who've transcended the dizzying lights of the first hit to become established names: Mariko Mori or Barry McGee, for example. Deitch;s name is synonymous with teh giddy, big-fun events, like his Art Parade in New York every Autumn, yet in the world of art and finance his pedigree is exceptional, having been vice president of Citibank where he managed art finance and advisory, before opening his own art advisory firm in 1988. As a curator his career highlights include the ambitious show Post Human in 1992. His current curatorial project for the DTSE Foundation is Fractured Figure, which opened this September, confirming that Deitch's feel for the contemporary moment is far from on the wane: assume vivid astro focus. David Altmejd, John Bock and Urs Fischer are all on the long roster of happening artists.

You meant Laz will die without Banksy right ? Where he is at present, I do not think B has to worry too much as he probably plays a major part of decision making me say... but I could be wrong.

Laz or Deitch?, by ricosg11 on Dec 5, 2007 22:12:41 GMT 1, I mean, a lot of great artists have faded into nothing because of poor management, going to the auction houses much to early, and large amounts of flipping.
But there I go saying too much. Get out there people, see, read, hear, learn.

^^^^what ricosg11 said^^^^^ Laz has broken all the basis rules of gallery, collector, artist relationships. It's not as if he could say, well I am new and changing things like an indie record label would have said in the 70s/80s, i.e. taking on the boring majors. Pushing hard has got Laz where he is now. ( hats off to him ) Pushing too hard may well alienate a lot of people at all ends of the spectrum.

Laz or Deitch?, by ricosg11 on Dec 5, 2007 23:08:26 GMT 1, Ill also add that I am probably the smallest fish in Deitch's gigantic pond, but after building a small relationship they have opened doors for me that I could have never imagined possible. From sourcing a piece I was looking all over for to putting me in direct contact with an artist. Great people with a great attitude, with a sincere belief in the artists they rep and getting the work into the hands of RESPONSIBLE owners (edit: Collectors/Protectors). Thats what real collectors do. We protect the gems for future generations to enjoy. The deeper I get into this, the more I learn, the more I want to start a museum instead of a gallery. Becuase isnt any great museum just an extension of the street.

A museum to street art is like a zoo to a wild animal...

I use to think Hirst was a tosser until I heard of his 'Art Museum' plan. respect to him, it could be one of the greatest legacies left to England or even the world.

The reasoning behind people's choices for Laz over Deitch. The previous posts have seemed to be a one sided argument in favor of Dietch. Even though I too am in favor of Deitch, I still enjoy listening to opinions different than my own.
I could also see how someone might be in favor of Laz since he primarily focuses on street art. Also, I think that although your career might not have much longevity if you were with Laz, the quick money might be an incentive as well.

Laz or Deitch?, by slowmo on Dec 7, 2007 0:32:06 GMT 1, I'm not voting on this, I don't know much about deitch projects, but I would say that you should hold off on comparing them for at least 10 years yet. Laz has not really been going that long comparatively and needs the time to catch up.
Laz are already showing signs of expansion from just street artists, in line with Deitch, if you want to compare the two, then you would have to go back to 1998ish for deitch and then say who you would want representing you?
Hope that makes some semblance of sense.
ADD ON - Having read about Deitch and what they are all about, I would have said White cube would have been a much better comparison for who you would want representing you, as they are British like Laz and have a similar history in terms of what they are about and how long they have been running. I would then vote for white cube, but I am biased because I am British!
