COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by jB on Nov 22, 2007 3:13:32 GMT 1, After speaking with a few forum members, I have finally picked up 'Collecting Contemporary' by Adam Lindemann and I would have to say it's intriguing to say the least, if you haven't heard of it, look it up, and get to know it! ;D
Anyhow, I've yet to get past the section speaking of art dealers (IE Nicole Hackert, Sadie Coles, Jeffrey Deitch, Max Hetzler respectively to name a few) and couldn't get the name Steve Lazarides out of my head.
My question is, Does anyone know where he got his start? Obviously he is a business man first and foremost, not to mention a marketing guru, but what is his background? Also, where do you think he will rank up against some of these big time players of the mid-nineties to today?

that makes sense i guess... You would think Adam Neate would be in his arsenal then by supplying all those free canvases

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by lesbianwednesdays on Nov 22, 2007 9:39:03 GMT 1, i heard steve laz used to sell meat and was a part time photographer. he basically started up in the art world whilst trying to manage banksy's early career. i don't know him but he strikes me as one of the entrepanerial types you used to get in the early nineties setting up nighclubs and one off raves etc, a kind of confidence to 'book them and they will come' mentallity. there were a lot of blaggers in that scene who managed to go a long way just by riding their luck.
LAZ is a pretty shrewd businessman but i think he was very much in the right place at the right time, quite how far he can go remains to be seen.
good luck to him.
NU might know a bit more than pure conjecture about him but ask the same question on the other forum and i'm sure you will get a lot more detail on him.

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by Strange Al on Nov 22, 2007 9:46:52 GMT 1, I totally agree that Adam Lindemann's Collecting Contemporary is a great insight into the world of contemporary art and a must read. For those that haven't got it, put it on your Christmas lists.
Incidentally, did anyone else notice that Lindemann was interviewed on the Imagine documentary which was on the BBC the other day? As regards Laz's career - there's an early interview with him here, which gives some of the background:

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by andrewd on Nov 22, 2007 9:58:18 GMT 1, Steve Lazarides was the photo editor of Sleazenation magazine, you'll find stuff about him with a quick google. I've read Adam Lindeman's collecting contemporary and one of the things the 'gallerists' seem to agree on is that they don't like their artists being put into auction at an early stage in their careers as it means that the prices of their work rises too quickly making a working relationship with collectors difficult for the gallerists. Laz doesn't seem to have a problem with this and actively seems to support auctioning of his 'top' artists work. Well he did say wanted to do things differently.

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by dotdot on Nov 22, 2007 10:05:57 GMT 1, I think it was good that the street/modern spin was not given to the "Imagine" program the other night.
Even though Banksy pieces were at Frieze - Yentob saw fit to make it simple as it were with his 5k. (that he was trying to spend / invest)
He didn't cover Affordable Art Fair ... interestingly.
As for Steve L - well he could do with a bit of PR - perhaps not - the amount he must court on a regular basis only helps to fuel the Laz/Banksy phenomena.

It did cover the Zoo art fair which is 'serious contemporary' and affordable ( I saw a few decent pieces for 2K ish and I am sure that there was cheaper stuff, the only thing I bought was a signed DHirst book for ยฃ75!). I've been to the affordable art fair a few times and IMO 90% of it struggles to be defined as art ( IMO alot of amatuer and unimaginatively derivative stuff with a few decent pieces in between). There are also several other art fairs now and I suppose there is a limit to what you can cover in a TV prog.

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by afroken on Nov 22, 2007 11:21:55 GMT 1, Steve lazarides was a very well respected photographer who did some award winning work. He became picture editor of Sleazenation magazine where his relentless ambition was already very obvious. Together with Jon Swinstead, publisher and owner of SN, he launched PYMCA, the youth photo library. An off-shoot of that was POW and they operated out of the same offices in Scrutton Street for some years.
Swinstead was a bit of a chancer and Sleazenation (and his other magazine Jockey Slut) went tits up. I don't know what happened next. Presumably Steve bought POW from the liquidators or did some sort of a deal. PYMCA is still going strong too but I have no idea if Steve still has anything to do with it.
The first post described him as a marketing guru. From my experience of him over the years he is simply extremely ambitious and, as a result of his Swinstead days, extremely well connected.
He was an amazing photographer, so bit of a shame he doesn't do that anymore. He used to hang out with Banksy in the early days and help him on his stenciling campaigns. He started taking photographs then.

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by dotdot on Nov 22, 2007 12:15:12 GMT 1, Also just a fyi PYMCA - sold early Banksy prints - I bought a Bomb Middle England (with prov) which was sold by them... Kindit/PYMCA/Sleazenation.

Agreed, and it only went tits up after it was taken over by Swinestead.. The move to London seriously fucked it up, Rob Young the editor held it steady for a while but it kinda lost it's way after a couple of years. Shame, nothing's really matched it since.

Well to be honest I didn't find the quality diminished after it moved down to The London, and the Disco Pogo CDs that came with the magazine in the last couple of years were incredible.... but I suspect that the extra costs involved with making it look slick didn't translate into extra sales.

COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY with Lazarides, by afroken on Nov 22, 2007 12:44:16 GMT 1, jockey Slut always did well. it was Sleazenation that brought it down after a doomed decision to make Steve Slocomb (who now runs Super Super) editor, rebrand as Sleaze, take the piss out of every one and everything, and not have any advertisers. It lasted 2 issues and then the bailiffs moved in.
