Removing creases?, by snelj8 on Nov 18, 2007 20:04:21 GMT 1, How do professional framers remove creases? Is there a way to completely remove creasing? And even 'fixing' the crease, how much would you estimate this decreases the value of a print? Would a 30% discount be reasonable?
I've received a print pretty severely damaged, but due to the rarity I would prefer to keep the print, but would like to know if it makes sense to keep and fix or get 100% refund.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Removing creases?, by bobbymeachamjr on Nov 18, 2007 20:12:34 GMT 1, Creasing especially if not on the image is an easy fix for a profressional. I recently had a piece with severe creases (plural) that hit the very edge of the image. $300 usd later at a reputable pro it's virtually "mint". I'm very detailed oriented and I can't notice ANY imperfections. I guess this might vary depending whether its a screen vs litho vs etc and/or the type of paper. In summary, in my experience creases are relatively easy to "fix"

Removing creases?, by beau on Nov 18, 2007 20:12:39 GMT 1, check my last post in 'what's your print horror story'...
just had it framed and it's mint - completely unnoticeable
see a really competent framer and most creases aren't a problem - but obviously depends how bad

beau, that is a very interesting pic of your damage, seeing as though I think I know who you purchased that print from. I purchased the same print from the same seller and have the same damage! This seller is getting a little sketch now as right now I'm questioning the provenance to the print and now realise he mailed me a damaged print knowing of the damage when he said it was mint!

Removing creases?, by chippyminton on Nov 18, 2007 21:25:52 GMT 1, I actually creased my own print (Grannies) - I carelessly put it in a folder and I managed to turn a corner over in the process.
Luckily the crease only went across the white border, so I got it framed with the mount to the edge of the screenprinted / pink background area with the blind stamp and number visible through a window cut out of the mount board. The framer i use said he couldn't do any thing else with it. Personally I'm happy ish with it, no one else has noticed it yet but I still look at it and curse myself every now and then.
If any body does have information re a means of 'restoring' or repairing creased prints I'd be very interested...

Removing creases?, by lesbianwednesdays on Nov 18, 2007 23:38:49 GMT 1, don't quote me on this but i was told that you can try rolling it back up and keep it in a tube for a few weeks then remove it, allow it to relax little and then try flattening it for a few weeks if you can.
anyone know if this actually works?
also, a step by step guide on the ironing technique would be very helpful at some point i'm sure, ta.

Removing creases?, by discoduster on Nov 19, 2007 7:49:03 GMT 1, Same scenerio, I recently received a sought after print but the tube was stoved in at the end during transit causing a crease on the top border.
I emailed details to a restorer and he told me he have a look but as it was thick art paper it would be very hard to do.
DIY details please
DD

Removing creases?, by sputnikeye on Nov 19, 2007 9:00:11 GMT 1, I was told by a printer to dampen the print lightly on the back and then use some sort of heavy press on top (books, wood) and leave it for a few days. Obviously you need to have good paper under and on top of the print..

Removing creases?, by curiousgeorge on Nov 19, 2007 10:07:56 GMT 1, OK, in the past I've tried DIY as well as taking something to the framers. Both methods gave me perfect results.
Firstly i boiled some water and allowed it to cool, then added that to a cleaned out (with sugar soap) sprat tanning bottle (v fine mist). Also had plenty of acid free tissue paper, and also also Kraft brown parcel paper. Getting ironing board out and also switch iron on(low setting with steam function off), brown paper on the base of ironing board followed by tissue paper, then print (image down) gently spray on the damaged area. Then add tissue paper layer and then brown paper. Iron away
I had some mdf sheets waiting both lined with acid free tissue paper, then place the image between these. On top of the mdf i was able to fit 4x 20kg weight discs and then i left it for 48 hours ish, flipping the print over after 24 hours. End result= perfectly flat print damage/crease free.
Don't believe me/ have concerns go to an art shop and buy some 200/240/280/300gsm art paper and crease and damage it yourself, then try fixing it
Good luck, remember always wear googles, ear defenders, hard hat *

Removing creases?, by chippyminton on Nov 19, 2007 22:24:40 GMT 1, cheers curious george... i think a practice run is a great idea, even if all it does is reassure me a bit.
The idea of taking an iron to my grannies scares the crap out of me

Removing creases?, by djgrantdell on Nov 19, 2007 22:29:39 GMT 1, check my last post in 'what's your print horror story'... just had it framed and it's mint - completely unnoticeable see a really competent framer and most creases aren't a problem - but obviously depends how bad beau, that is a very interesting pic of your damage, seeing as though I think I know who you purchased that print from. I purchased the same print from the same seller and have the same damage! This seller is getting a little sketch now as right now I'm questioning the provenance to the print and now realise he mailed me a damaged print knowing of the damage when he said it was mint!
Thats it now i have had enough of this cheeky t**t. I sent you a photo of the print before i rolled up to post it to you, it was fine. As i have said more than ten times it got fucking creased when i rolled it..i have offered for you to send it back and i will get it fixed ..WHICH IS BLOODY EASY TO DO..or you can have a full refund....and listen to this he asked for a 60% discount and he keeps the print...the cheek!!! the crease is where the ink finishes on the print so when its rolled its almost impossible for it not to crease, its paper thin paper...now you are saying that i sent you a damaged print...and you are questioning its prov, i have given you the full prov and told you the full history of the print...its not like the bloody crease is right across the middle...IS IT? you are really pissing me off by saying all this rubbish about it being damaged when i sent it..there is no bloody way i would have done that plus i sent you a picture of it before hand..

Removing creases?, by redscab on Nov 19, 2007 22:48:29 GMT 1, This seems a bit all to familiar fella - I sold a print to a guy in The U.S about a year ago & he tried the same thing on with me saying that it was creased etc - I offered him his money back in full- yet he would not return it saying that he wanted a part refund of up to 50% - I will check & see if its the same guy - thats the trouble with selling overseas & if you have offered him a refund in full whats his problem?? He's obviously trying it on!!! Vai Comdeus.
