Tip of the iceberg..., by funster on Nov 20, 2007 18:23:37 GMT 1, ... and I'm not talking about a lettuce...
I was speaking with a respected investment analyst today and we came to the discussion of art and how prices were falling, in some cases by quite a lot. His feeling is that it's only just the start, a 30% drop is nothing like the potential 80%+ drop that could be round the corner. At the moment people are mainly selling to fund Christmas amongst other things. When they're funding keeping the bailiffs from the door and the mortgage companies repossessing their houses that's when we'll see real panic buying. In lot's of ways I hope he's wrong as it's not like I've been buying conservatively for the last 12 months, but if he's right what will the long term effect be?

Tip of the iceberg..., by ricosg11 on Nov 20, 2007 18:36:47 GMT 1, problem is once an artist has to drop a price their career is over. I hope Laz hasnt backed himself into a corner.
To counter that, the rich are always rich and will always buy art in any economy. Especially when it is doing better than the financial markets and taxes on the profits from art are being reduced in a few months.

Tip of the iceberg..., by BK83 on Nov 20, 2007 18:40:24 GMT 1, Conor Harrington seems like the only artist who is doing it right. His prices are not exorbitant and he is steadily increasing the value proportionately to the increased interest in him and his career. Too many other artists on the scene are in it for the quick buck and will proabably not be around in the long term.....

Tip of the iceberg..., by BONGO on Nov 20, 2007 18:45:38 GMT 1, BONGO HAS COMMENTED ON THIS MANY TIMES
IF YOU BUY WHAT YOU LIKE, AT A PRICE YOU CAN AFFORD AT THE TIME, THEN THINGS WILL BE EASIER
IF YOU BUY WHAT OTHER PEOPLE LIKE, BORROW TO FUND IT AND EXPECT MULTIPLES OF RETURN, THEN YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE UNHAPPY
BONGO SAY NEARLY EVERYTHING DEPRECIATES OVER TIME.BONGO WOULD NOT PAY ยฃ500 FOR A BOSCH FRIDGE THIS XMAS AND EXPECT IT TO BE WORTH ยฃ550 NEXT YEAR. BUT BONGO KNOW A FRIDGE IS NOT ART.
OR IS IT.
BONGO MAYBE NOT SURPRISED THAT ART IS LIKE ANY OTHER LIMITED NON ESSENTIAL COMMODITY AND SUBJECT TO THE WHIMS OF TASTE AND MARKET.
PUT THE PIC ON THE WALL AND ENJOY IT.
IF IT IS WORTH MORE WHEN YOU COME TO SELL IT, WELL DONE
IF NOT, THEN YOU HAVE HAD ENJOYMENT OUT OF IT.
REMEMBER THAT PRINT IS ONLY WORTH A POUND OR TWO IN PHYSICAL MATERIAL VALUE - THIS IS WHY VALUE IS AN ESOTERIC CONCEPT IN MANY WAYS AND IT MAY BE VULGAR TO ASSIGN ANY MONETARY VALUE TO A WORK OF ART.
UNLESS YOU ARE A RUSSIAN OLIGARCH OR CHINESE SHODDY GOODS FACTORY OWNER

Sorry, do those smileys represent a large dose of sarcasm?
Labour have been appalling in power for all number of reasons... but if you think the Tories are going to help the poor you're much mistaken.

Tip of the iceberg..., by sham69 on Nov 20, 2007 18:48:53 GMT 1, Basic plot
There are many versions of the story, but the basic premise is that a chicken called Chicken Little eats lunch one day, and believes the sky is falling down because an acorn falls on her head. She decides to tell the King, and on her journey meets other animals who join her in the quest. In most retellings, the other animals have similarly rhyming names. Finally, they come across Foxy Loxy, a fox who offers Chicken Little and her friends his help.
After this point, there are many endings. In the most famous one, Foxy Loxy eats Chicken Little's friends, but the last one, usually Cocky Lockey, survives enough to warn Chicken Little and she escapes. Other endings include Foxy eating them all; the characters being saved by a squirrel or an owl and getting to speak to the King; the characters being saved by the King's hunting dogs; even one version in which the sky actually falls and kills Foxy Loxy.
Depending on the version, the moral changes. In the "happy ending" version, the moral is not to be a "Chicken Little", but to have courage. In other versions the moral is usually interpreted to mean "do not believe everything you are told". In the latter case, it could well be a cautionary political tale: Chicken Little jumps to a conclusion and whips the populace into mass hysteria, which the unscrupulous fox uses to manipulate them for his own benefit.

Tip of the iceberg..., by funster on Nov 20, 2007 18:54:04 GMT 1, I really agree with you Bongo, but the interesting thing will be when people who bought things they liked and thought they could afford to now realise that despite still liking it the new costs of life are taking their hold. If anyone's wanting to sell their prints at the 'physical material value' let me know, especially if its signed

Tip of the iceberg..., by stuey09 on Nov 20, 2007 19:44:38 GMT 1, Same old debate and the same old answers still apply. If you don't max your card and only spend what you can genuinely afford, buying art that you either love, or can at least live with, then so what if the art market dips. Bottom line, it means that as the greedy element start shedding their Banksys, Micallefs and Neates etc, the genuine fans will snap them up for a bargain.

Tip of the iceberg..., by danvnuk on Nov 20, 2007 19:48:08 GMT 1, I think we're definately starting to see a decline here - not just art, but you've got the US economy which by all accounts isn't healthy, the papers are printing stories that the housing price boom is over, Ive heard of a couple of redundancies in the city this week (mates of friends) A beautifully framed JD went for under a grand. Cats chasing dogs.....
and I 'feel' more hardup than normal -
Fingers crossed it's just a blip..... ;D
As for art - I don't really care, sure it's nice to know my Art is worth umpteen gazillion Euros - but it only matters if your selling it. And I'm not. ;D

It was me that was snappy
MY badly made point was that unless he was interested in this kind of art, then why would anything he has to say about it be of any use.
It like my Mum coming around and saying my Neate self portraits are horrible, what does she know
Love and peace and all that :-)
