No word of a lie, I was trying one on in TK max this weekend. Almost bought it, only ยฃ50. Just couldn't be certain the winter would be so bad as to justify it. It didn't feel good leaving it on the shelf though. There was only one left and it was a beauty. The king of snorkle parkers.

Mid Life Crisis, by corblimeylimey on Sept 4, 2007 22:04:50 GMT 1, I wasn't allowed one ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) "too dangerous" apparently. I never came to any harm when I played on my mates bike though ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ;D Too expensive more like. I'm pretty sure thats why so many of us got lumped with grifters and Raleigh commando's. Although I do faintly remember something about them being dangerous. It is harder to ride a bike with handle bars like that, just like those Harley's are harder to ride, so I've been told.
My dad repeatedly told me about all the horror stories, either that I'd fly over the handlebars, or it would tip backwards.

Mid Life Crisis, by misteraitch on Sept 4, 2007 22:05:35 GMT 1, I used to have a super skuda skateboard - transparent blue with the double kicktail before I progressed onto a nice wooden logan earth ski and red kryptonics ;D
I was recently given a deck made from hemp from a company that I did some deck design work for so I thought I'd get back into it once again. I bought a hefty set of pads (much better than the coopers I used to have back in the day) and thoroughly enjoyed it for a while until the local council decided to build a lovely new 9ft deep concrete kidney bowl which resulted in too many injuries and I realised that I didn't bounce as well as I did when I was a kid ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)
I've just turned 40 and I don't feel any older than I did as a youngster - however, my body is telling me different as is the wife ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

oh man don't get me started! Running around wearing your coat by it's hood ;D
I remember zipping imy snorkel all the way up, and inadvertantly trapping some of the fur at the end so that the zip stuck ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)
25 minutes before I could unzip it - and let me tell you - there's no fear like the fear of realising that you've got your head stuck ;D

Mid Life Crisis, by corblimeylimey on Sept 4, 2007 22:11:47 GMT 1, As for skateboards, CBL, i used to have one of those woolies red things, then went onto a black plastic thing with two kicktails. Man, those skateboards were tiny compared to the ones nowadays
Yep, I think the board was pretty small, very narrow with really wide wheels (about twice as wide as they were tall I think)
When my kids were into skateboarding 5 or 6 years ago I had to have a little play on theirs, I just ignored their plea's of "don't dad, you'll break it" etc

I didn't have a chopper but I had a Grifter (precursor to the bmx)
although I'm suprised it moved with the amount of bread tags stuck to the wheels - none of this rubbish tape they use today
"Come and reminisce if you think you're old enough!" ;D

Mid Life Crisis, by finsburyparkranger on Sept 4, 2007 22:19:04 GMT 1, Whatever you do FPR DON'T get a skateboard I have two scars and a chipped tooth because I thought I'd see how fast I could go down a steep hill! Only problem was I couldn't stop and had to jump off at approx 35mph and smashed into two cars. OUCH, OUCH, OUCH ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) A Mongoose or Grifter all day ;D
He he he. Was never very skilled on a skateboard. Although i did recently go down Ferme park road, london , N8 on roller blades. If anyone knows that road they'll appreciate how pissed off with myself I was when I was half way down, going like the clappers had a corner coming up and no time machine.
Also I came down Alley Pally hill on Muswell hill about the same time two years ago and pulled a little jump off the kerb at the end to smoothly launch into priory road, when the fooking front wheel came off. I actually flew like super man. I know what it feels to fly like superman now, its a constant feeling of s**tting oneself.

man, when i was a kid, i excitedly stuck my head out of the car window to talk to someone at the same time as I was winding the window up (or maybe trying to wind it down and went the wrong way), anyway, wound the window onto my own head and got it trapped. That sucked.

Mid Life Crisis, by Strange Al on Sept 4, 2007 22:38:32 GMT 1, Look up Boxfresh (clothing label primarily) they have just rebranded the Raleigh Mongoose, ยฃ250 I think. Better than the ยฃ300-400 you are likely to pay for a reconditioned (or well looked after one) on Ebay.
I'm not sure the Boxfresh Raleigh Burner is out yet, but due any day now if not.
Though I'd track down the recent 25th Anniversary Edition Raleigh released earlier this summer. They were ยฃ250, but seem to have sold out most places (if not everywhere). I've seen a few on the bay at the ยฃ300 mark. 'Tis a thing of beauty:

Mid Life Crisis, by arcam on Sept 4, 2007 22:52:20 GMT 1, Way too old for this.......but looking to suppress my mid life crisis by buying myself a BMX for my big 40 Any ideas on good ones to get.....it'll likely to remain propped up against the wall after a couple of times round the block. I used to have a Redline way back when, at least their still making them. And may be someone out there has one that's collecting dust that they'd like to sell Weren't Diamond Backs the mutts nutts of BMX's? I used to have some Raleigh jobby, always wanted a Diamond Back, so I think if I were to get one now it'd be that one. ;D

Mid Life Crisis, by scavos on Sept 4, 2007 23:13:13 GMT 1, Just back from watching Bez. He spent his BB winnings on a new set of gnashers! ;D
This thread's a beast! What a bunch of quality memories. ;D
Way before the bmx days I had a bright red Raleigh tomahawk - the first thing I ever got bought from new (jumbles were all the rage back then in Chillwell apparently - I come out in hives whenever I walk into fusty charity shops at my jumble sale memories, which is a problem for the modern day record collector). ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)
I felt so smug about the my brand new bike until my so called mate turned up literally the next day with the gold edition! Never seen it since... I was soooo gutted. Graham always was a smug t**t. And he smelt of damp biscuits. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
My bro had the green Raleigh Striker and then progressed onto the Grifter with the quick shift gears on the grip.
Now this is all very well but when you're 8 years old and you've just pinched your little brother's Grifter to ride up and down completely showing off ;D infront of your 'girlfriend' doing turnskids, when your wrist tightens and throws you into slipgear, swiftly thrusting your nadgers onto the cross bar!! >:(It doesn't do wonders for your street cred having to hobble back to your mum with your hand between your legs, dragging your bro's bike behind you. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png)
You can keep your Grifter's thank you very much. I could never look at Kirsty again properly after that which is a shame cos we had potential. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png)
Give me my chrome DP Freestyler anyday. ;D And oh, don't set me off about skateboards!! Yeah Michael J Fox has a great deal to answer for! ;D

Jump high in the air, turn the bike sideways (horizontal to the ground) and land without crashing.......

Oh yes!! ;D And the burgundy pineapple stitch jumper, burgundy 'Y' cardy, burgundy tank-top, blue/black Farah stay press (larger label on bottom of trouser leg with split sides so they flare up around the Puma G-vilas, the Patrick cagoule, benetton tops....
I nearly bought a pair of G-Vilas the other day but they didn't have my size. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw they were doing the rounds again. Brown with a light blue stripe. Preferred the white with light blue stripe though. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Mid Life Crisis, by nombei on Sept 5, 2007 2:24:09 GMT 1, not quite hitting 40 myself, but my MLC was buying some markers and tagging junk again. used to do a lot of it between 84 and 93 but then retired. totally retarded and not worth it should i get caught...
fortunately, i've gotten smart enough to only hit low risk targets.
