Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by RBK on Sept 10, 2006 17:34:17 GMT 1, Someone made the astute post that this forum has a BIG affect on Ebay prices. Do you all believe that our 1,000 members, bidding against each other, etc., are artificially making prices non-representative of the true marketplace?
I wonder if we will see a 'crash' once people have obtained all the prints that they want. Thoughts?

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by jchapman on Sept 10, 2006 18:01:13 GMT 1, When you look at the amount of views each piece at auction get, I'd hardly think that it was the people only on this forum bidding against each other. In my opinion it's the L.A. show next week. There's alot of thought that once the L.A. show hits and more American collectors take notice that the prices are going to skyrocket from there. People are buying up what they can now before that happens. I've been studying the price movements during the last three weeks leading up to the L.A. show. Grin Reaper was selling for $1,300 U.S. (3) weeks ago, $1,500 last week and now $2,800. CND Soldiers were slightly under $600 and now sells for over $1,100. This is all in the past three weeks. The price gains are impressive, nothing can go up for ever, although I feel a leveling off is due before future price increases can be attained. We'll see what happens after the L.A. show.

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by Daniel Silk on Sept 10, 2006 19:57:08 GMT 1, The Banksy prices have risen loads over the last year, and thats only really from UK and European buyers, But now the US art buyer has discovered his work it expands the market massively Only American people that really have their finger on the pulse will know about this LA Show, so it could take a year for the whole US market to really accept Banksy as the real mover and Shaker that he is ;D
Only a couple of months ago you could maybe count the number of American members of this forum on one hand, but now it must be well over 100 ;D Welcome! ;D

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by monochrome on Sept 10, 2006 22:32:16 GMT 1, but the US loves to make icons of people - so if banksy don't want to be known then that's f**ked. i personally don't buy the idea that the LA show will make he prints rise in price again - i think they are reaching ceiling already, or about to. when you can pick up a Hirst, a Murakami etc for the same or half the price you have to question the steep rise we've had recently.. as it is steep, worryingly so. Grin Reaper non seller a month a go for £750, now 4 go in a weekend for £1500... inflation like Mexico!

New fans are coming on board all the time and there are only a limited amount of prints. I can easily see prints such as GWB unsigned passing the 2k mark by christmas. It's just a question of supply and demand. And I have to say I'd much rather have a banksy than a dotty print by Hirst or a child like drawing by Murakami on my wall. If the US won't recognise banksy as an icon because he doesn't have his mug everywhere, then so be it, I'm sure he'll do ok with us limeys and the r.o.w. Fortunately I have all the Banksy's I want, but I do agree that if I was a new collector, then I would be a tad disappointed that I'd have to spend a small fortune acquiring his work. If you want affordable art from up and coming artists then you'd be better off buying Micallef of Faile..

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by monochrome on Sept 11, 2006 12:27:52 GMT 1, i was thinking of comparative artists who have prints available - that was the best i could come up with. i do believe there is a little more growth in the market, but the ceiling is close, otherwise the price will over take more well established, world reknown artists.. and i think that could just mean a 'false' value. personally i'm happy to see them spiral upwards - a step closer to moving out of the trailer park for me.

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by lesroy on Sept 11, 2006 18:23:15 GMT 1, Also, lets not forget somethings:
1) one of the big reasons Banksy's stuff is sooo sought after is the mystery of the man... you will neverf be able to take your pretty picture down to the local HMV and get Banksy to sign it when he is down there releasing his new book.
Who is this man, this artist, this prankster, this political / social activist? No one knows... and how much more amazing is it to see his work on a wall that you walk past everyday... knowing he has been here, illegly during the night... then you can buy and own a LTD Ed print of it... and yet still only a handfull know him.
This is why it's sooo sought after and can't be compared to the prices of "proper" artists that we can stalk and talk to on MSN!
2) Every time Banksy does his "real" work on some f**kers wall or shopfront... there is a chance he'll be caught. Or a chance he will retire from his pranks or artwork... imagine what will happen to his work then!
Finally, I beleive the only thing that will make his work "crash" in price is if he comes out and we all see that his a 5ft ginger pigmie with piedo tendances.
Fingers crossed he aint!!

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by RBK on Oct 26, 2007 16:48:25 GMT 1, Perry - there definitely was a correction from Feb-April of this year though (my original post was in Sept. '06).
And personally I think at this momment, while there won't be a crash - that prices are topped out and won't get much higher.

Price Ceiling on the Horizon?, by Dead Elvis on Oct 26, 2007 18:01:45 GMT 1, I take it these were referring to signed prints? I remember seeing those prices when I was just collecting Obey exclusively, thinking how mad people were, paying that much for a screen print. How times, along with my rationale, have changed...

they say history repeats itself, shame it seems to be almost daily on here sometimes.
