ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by sherlock on Jul 1, 2007 12:26:20 GMT 1, Hi, I am relatively new to the board but have been a Banksy fan for years and this board has given me alot of enjoyment over the past month or two. The thing is I didn't buy one back in the day which, like other people I'm sure, am regretting immensly However, I have come into a bit of money and want to purchase some more art. I own a couple of Micallefs but am unsure what to purchase next. This is because the purchase needs to be an investment as well as an appreciation of the art. The problem is I appreciate too much and cant make my muddled mind up So, I have several ideas. Can you share your expert thoughts please.
1. Buy a signed Banksy, even though at ยฃ5000, the choice now is quite limited. 2. Buy several unsigned Banksy's 3. Buy another Micallef, possible one from Laz Inc 4. Buy a print or two from the upcoming Neate show (However not sure how much they will be, or availablity.
I know I should just go with my convictions, like I did with the Micallefs, but I was not spending ยฃ5000 then.
Looking at these choices after reading it again, they all seem like a good idea.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated and sorry if this has been posted in the wrong board, it just seems that more people look here !!!
Thanks again

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by corblimeylimey on Jul 1, 2007 12:39:38 GMT 1, It looks like your signed Banksy options would be limited to the LA series - Grannies, Applause & Morons, Virgin Mary, CND, Rats, J&J, & I Fought The Law. also there's the rare chance of getting a new yet to be released Banksy signed.
Has anyone else any ideas on which signed prints could be obtained for ยฃ5000 or less?

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by stuey09 on Jul 1, 2007 12:42:49 GMT 1, It's a nice dilema Sherlock, wish it was mine. If it was me I would buy a Laz Micallef and an unsigned Banksy. It would take me a little over the 5k, but I'd have 2 amazing prints that are unlikely to deppreciate.
Good luck mate, I hope you get something exciting with the money.

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by ratsashocker on Jul 1, 2007 12:44:05 GMT 1, Hmmm... its a tricky one that...nice problem to have though! for me now doesn't seem a great time to buy unsigned Banksy work as prices seem to be being driven up steeply right now, however they could maybe go up even more. A signed Banksy would be a good investment & i'm guessing something you would really enjoy owning. However investment wise I would say probably the Laz Micallef OR a Neate print from the next exhibit. This probably doesn't help much so my best advice is as always buy what you love first!

I think your point about the unreleased LA prints is the tightest solution, although a gamble due to demand.

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by mose on Jul 1, 2007 12:48:16 GMT 1, given your interests and ยฃ5000 to spend on art I would track down a 21st Century Love...While the Laz editions are amazing, and rarer, 21st Century will always be 'the' Micallef - the signature work that most people are familiar with....
outside the box a bit more(and more my style), ยฃ5000 could get you a decent original by David Choe, Jose Parla, etc., an epic original from someone like Titi Freak(with change) or Dave Kinsey, or multiple originals from Dolk, Logan Hicks, Beejoir(grab an LV canvas), Bast, Borf, Chris Kettle, Dan Baldwin, etc......For investment, an original is riskier but rewardier....IMO, they are just plain cooler....

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by sherlock on Jul 1, 2007 12:54:00 GMT 1, Much appreciated guys. Having not seen the new Neate prints I am unsure. I do collect contempory pottery. Its not as sad as it sounds, honest ) and was considering buying a neate, dan kelly collaboration, but having not seen them, its a difficult one.
thanks for those Mose. Its interesting what you say about the 21c. I was in the Eyestorm in Exeter about 8 months ago now and saw that and Dirty Deluxe. They were both going for approx ยฃ600. I had just come from a pottery gallery where I had spent the same amount on a few pieces and therefore couldn't justify the cost for the 21c. Went back 2 weeks later as I really wanted it and it had gone, but got the DD for a little bit more. I'm really happy with it, but it was the 21c that I fell in love with. I also have an Angel Bomber which I like alot too.
Decisions, decisions
If anyone has any of the said pieces that they would like to sell, please get intouch.

Only 150 of them. Image isn't to everyone's taste hence the low price but it is classic Banksy & IMO well; ahead of the LA prints.

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by Coach on Jul 1, 2007 22:33:17 GMT 1, hi sherlock, I'm new member too, and not got the wealth of expertise that a lot of these guys have. but i will add my 2p worth. I think the Laz micallefs look amazing, and that's what i would go for if i had that sort of money to spend. However if its a Banksy you are after, i can tell you that CND Soldiers looks fantastic framed. I have it on a wall with 3 other black and white prints, so the red cnd sign is the only splash of colour. It looks very striking. looking at ebay, cnd might just be within your price range. But really, i agree with the earlier post (ABC) - go with whatever you most admire, and would most like hung on your wall.

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by poofly on Jul 2, 2007 3:00:53 GMT 1, Go with the micallefs from laz.
Remeber when 3.5 K seemed alot for the 4 banksy soup cans? and same for the kate prints...
These higher prices means they just aren't accessible to as many people, meaning they won't come around as much as they are real collectors items, proper gallery type banter. buy something that was 500 a few years ago and 5000 might be its top, but buy one now for 4.5k and you could see the value go stoopid....
Lets face it you will never get one of the new laz micallefs for less than 5k, its just a different ball game....

ยฃ5000 dilemma! Can you help?, by jp on Jul 2, 2007 8:19:10 GMT 1, If you like Trolley Hunters I would hold on to your money until it is released by POW. It is arguably the most popular of the LA prints, and you will have 2 shots at getting it below 5k (directly from POW and on ebay shortly after they sell out). You can use the same logic for the other 2 Banksy prints from the LA series, but I do think Trolleys would be the best investment if you have to pay market price. Good luck either way and be sure to post what you eventually buy.

As the others have commented, what a nice problem to have.
I'm with Mose on this one. When thinking about spending that sort of cash, for me the only option would be an original by a slightly less well known artist.
There's simply nothing like looking at an original work. IMO a print, unless printing is the original medium of the piece, will never properly convey the emotions and feelings of an artist. You need the brushwork, the texture, etc to be properly drawn into the artist's world.
In addition to the people Mose has mentioned, for the type of cash you are thinking of spending you could pick up an amazing work from Matt Small, Conor Harrington, A Faile or Aiko original or maybe even an original Neate (you can easily pick up one of his better street pieces for much less than ยฃ5K). Save to mention countless works by very talented artists never discussed on the board.
I'd go about it a different way and start emailing the artists directly. You may be surprised what you can commission for ยฃ5K.
OK, so the Banksy prints may give the greatest return in the short run and offer a slightly "safer" bet from an investment perspective. Though, if you put in the work and choose the right original from the right artist then there's no contest IMO. And don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Banksy fan.

ABC: Do you have money invested in one of these? I remember recently (a few days ago) in another thread you were saying that the LAZ Micallef's are overpriced...
ah.. here it is:
I agree the Laz prints look amazing, the best ones of the bunch by far. But from the off they have been over priced, maybe the run of alleged in-house buying will make them look cheap at the LA show.
My advice sherlock, is to just buy something that you want to hang on the walls. If you're after a quick $$ from an investment, then buy a Banksy print and swap it up at a later stage if you want.

I am trying to get my finances together and buy a few investment pieces so to speak a few that I really love. I know I am very lucky to be able to do this, as the prices are going galactic at the mo pricing most out.
I already have a Dirty Deluxe so hadn't really thought about that purchase with the Beejoir LV. Having said that could have sold on the DD and kept the LV canvas which I love.
Anyway as I said, mulling over a few now and will let you know what I decide
Thanks again everyone ;D
