hifi/electrical help, by Wiseblood on Oct 20, 2007 12:41:23 GMT 1, i went into a show home a while back and they had speakers in every ceiling playing out the same music. As im board i fancy doing this. Only music playing devices i have in the house is a radio in the shower and a bose idock. So i need something new that preferably will play radio, hook up to my ipod and maybe play cds. What can i get? im going to wire up all the speakers to this and hide it in the pantry (sounds posh but i just have my hoover in there) so it cant be mahoosive, or expensive as the 5 mics last month maxed the credit card Thanks for any help

hifi/electrical help, by teatwosugars on Oct 20, 2007 16:04:16 GMT 1, LOL! ;D Installing a new speaker system out of boredom! Sounds like something I'd do!
I've been looking at things like this for a while now as the new house we've bought has cat 5 cables already installed in the ceilings and down the walls to blank face plates. I had someone round to quote us for 2 pairs of speakers in the kitchen, lounge and 2 of the bedrooms, and it came out to about 4 and a half grand!!! (there's no way I'm paying that)!
I worked out that I could get the same products they quoted for under half the price and give it a go myself. They used the cambridge audio speakers which are now available from Richer sounds-
[ftp]http://www.richersounds.com/information.php?cda=static&cst=incognito[/ftp]
For more info on them-
[ftp]http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=136[/ftp]
These systems have a central hub which could go under the stairs. You can then have outputs anywhere in the house to plug any sort of system into to. You could also have all your tv audio running through it for that cinema experience!
I'm definitely tempted to do it but finding a couple of grand to spend on it is no easy feat with this art addiction!!
You may have this side of things sorted out, or just want something far simpler, but I thought It'd be worth mentioning

hifi/electrical help, by Wiseblood on Oct 20, 2007 16:12:07 GMT 1, cheers teatwosugars, all i was thinking of was getting a hifi with a docking station, and a junction box with 6 switches on wire that up to the speakers and then wire 6 ceiling speakers to that, i dont have a big house so dont need more than one speaker in each room i dont think (depends how loud they go) with a speaker in the kitchen, front and back room, hall, bathroom and bedroom. maybe a dimmer switch type thing on each wall so i can independantly control sound in each room. I have a surround sound thing for the telly, which is enough so would just be for music and radio, saves turning things up so loud that i can here it in the bathroom.

hifi/electrical help, by redfred on Oct 20, 2007 16:21:18 GMT 1, If your really into Hi-Fi its pointless linking up good components and speakers to pre-installed cables because they are usually such poor quality you wont get the best out of your equipment and to run even mid-range speaker cables throughout a house would have an astronomical cost. Ime presently running 2 off 2metre lengths to my speakers which set me back £2300 and that is nowhere near the most expensive, at the end of the day it depends on what quality sound you want/can afford.

The skys the limit when it comes to Hi Fi, I've got a Cyrus Amp and CD player for the kitchen extension, and a Quad 606 power amp and Cyrus CD player for the lounge, linked to refurbished Gale 401s. I've recently refurbished the Gales (I've had them for over 20 years) the Quad amp is also about 20 years old, and I bought the Cyrus 8 amp and CD 6 player second hand off ebay for nearly half the price new (about £300) in the long run I think my Hi Fi works out pretty cheap.

Sounds good, and certainly will work out cheaper than all the bits I've been looking at.
However, and don't quote me on this, I think to turn up the volumes in individual rooms you'll need to have a pair of speakers. One is active and one is passive, and I believe the active one has it's own amplifier inbuilt so it runs of the 'dimmer switch'. Can anyone else advise on this?
I don't know about you, but I'm beginning to find technology moving a little too quickly now. Maybe I'm just getting older! I'm still finding out about all this so will be interested to hear what you end up doing as I can't see me sorting out my one anytime soon

I have just had an install completed in my house - speakers in ceilings in various rooms, ability to play through various sources such as radio, itunes cd's, sky etc etc all connected up.
Look at the Sonus range of products - its all fairly modular so you can get a base solution then add as you go so for example start in the lounge then when you have a bit more cash go to the kitchen, bedroom, garden etc. The ceiling mounted speakers are available from various manufacturers.
Its a superb solution and worth looking into - I did quite a bit of research on various solution and went for the Sonus in the end.
....hope that helps

hifi/electrical help, by robo on Oct 22, 2007 10:47:57 GMT 1, Sonos is good; slightly cheaper and similar functionality is SlimServer - worth a look at. A good thing about that is as well as using their hardware, you can also turn any PC on your network into a music player for your central music library. I even used it to stream music from my home network in London to a party Brussels once, though it was a bit glitchy.
