Marla Olmstead?????, by atkuefler on Oct 22, 2007 6:29:41 GMT 1, What are your guys thoughts on the success of Marla Olmstead? If any of you are not familiar with her she is the "4 year old child prodigy artist." I think this could make for very interesting conversation as to what people think of her and whether or not she is what they claim she could be.
She has a film out about her called: My Kid Could Paint That
What are all of your thoughts?
For me the verdict is still out.

Marla Olmstead?????, by pezlow on Oct 22, 2007 8:33:22 GMT 1, I had never heard of her before. This is surely a pisstake. My daughter is 5 1/2 and she does loads of paintings like this at her art class. I think they are lovely but that is because I am her dad. I wouldn't try to sell them on the open market....

Marla Olmstead?????, by doughy on Oct 22, 2007 8:42:33 GMT 1, I understand what you say Pez, but perhaps there may be a little more to her composition than normal, but hard to really say if its luck or inspired.
Any-who's, by 18 she'll be on drugs and making an arse of herself a la Britney due to the parents exploitation of her, and in-turn they will go through a messy divorce and scar the child for life.
Let her have a normal childhood for f**ks sake., nasty evil parents!

Marla Olmstead?????, by BK83 on Oct 22, 2007 17:59:50 GMT 1, Have you seen the movie yet Alarmists, Pez, doughy? I saw it the other week with my g/f. we cam to the clear assumption that her dad is behind the whole thing. her paintings are just too aesthetically composed for it to be done by a child. They're too well orchestrated. I suggest everyone see this movie -- very well done and a great expose on Modern Art.

Marla Olmstead?????, by atkuefler on Oct 22, 2007 18:24:36 GMT 1, I am going tonight. It seem clear that her father is behind all of this. 60 minutes put a hidden camera in the room she paints in and it clearly showed her father telling her what to do and also the finished product that she did herself was 1/100th of the other ones she has put out. The parents blamed in on something like "she just was not in her zone. we cant figure out why this one turned out as it did." BS!!!! I am excited to go see it though...

Marla Olmstead?????, by slowmo on Oct 22, 2007 18:30:31 GMT 1, This conversation reminds me of the funny curly haired welsh lad (now a woman) who claimed to be an antiques expert and got onto Wogan. It turned out his dad had taught him all the right things to say and many were fooled.

I remember that. The kid was a real weirdo. I got him mixed up with William Hague for years ;D

Marla Olmstead?????, by Dead Elvis on Oct 22, 2007 19:36:45 GMT 1, Ah, yes. I recently discussed this with a colleague of mine while we were at the MoMA over-looking their abstract expressionist collection. With an art history background, I have to call BS on Marla Olmstead. If she were able to reproduce a classical piece [which real prodigies are able do do at her age] I would give her full credit, but pushing a bunch of paint around on canvas is completely different. Saying that she's the first prodigal modern artist is, as Pez said, a pisstake. I can't wait to see the film; I'd love to hear all of the points they are arguing. Given the evidence I have to go by (have any of you read the names of her pieces?), I say hoax.

Marla Olmstead?????, by BK83 on Oct 22, 2007 19:57:42 GMT 1, What's great about the movie is that it absolutely argues from both sides of the story. It really is well done. I think the problem here is that there is no doubt that her father helps her, it's that he lied about it and continues to lie about. Why can't he just come out and say that they both paint the fucking pictures....?! I dont get it. people were intially drawn to the paintings, not the story of the little girl -- the story came afterwards and some sort of marketing ploy, which still could have worked if they had just told everyone that Marla and her dad creat them and that he is inspired by the subconcious actions of a child painting.
