Learning Curves, by streetgirl on Oct 23, 2007 9:46:49 GMT 1, It seems to me that nearly everyone at some point in their art collection 'career' has done something they either regret, slightly cringe at on reflection or acted hastily on.
I say this only because a friend recently took an interest in art and went straight onto the bay and as he was about to click on a BIN price, I put a stop to it and suggested he shop around first, perhaps even join a forum for some advice, or let me ask around...before he did something he would later regret with a little knowledge under his belt.
I did the same months back, wanted a TM so bad that I took the first one that I saw on offer, had a tiny ripple (that you can't see now it's framed) and didn't come with full provenance (just a trail of history on ebay), though I have now sorted that out and got confirmation from POW...for about a week I stewed over it...now it's framed and about to go up, I couldn't be happier and it's in the top 3 prints I have.
I don't claim to be an expert now by any means, but we were all novices once, and I am sure we've all had a moment when we've acted hastily or made an err in judgement...or is it just me and my mate!?!?!

Learning Curves, by absyrd on Oct 23, 2007 9:58:44 GMT 1, I haven't bought much off of ebay, but generally jumping on a BIN will make you second-guess yourself. Then you try to justify by reminding yourself that you paid what you did because you HAD to have that image.
For example, I admittedly have "overpaid" for Faile stuff because of the worry about lack of availability in the future. As soon as it arrives at my doorstep and makes its way onto the wall, I completely forget how I got it and what I paid for it.
Stick to what most of the smart people on here say; only buy things that you intend on keeping because they hold some kind of personal value to you. If you overspend and the money problem can't be fixed by getting an extra job wiping down tables for a few weeks, then you shouldn't be spending in the first place. This way you never leave yourself in a position where your art collecting becomes a chore rather than a pleasure.

Learning Curves, by corblimeylimey on Oct 23, 2007 10:45:49 GMT 1, The first print I bought was Banksy's Jack & Jill from Art Republic, if I knew what I know now I should have bought one from ebay or a member here, I paid £500 for it (framed) in Aug 06, I'm sure I could have saved some money.
I've only bought Bleks Last Tango on ebay, everything else has been from source.

Learning Curves, by bristolmassive on Oct 23, 2007 11:30:15 GMT 1, i think my biggest ebay over pay was £280 for a red shat at about a year ago! But I still own the print and love it - it's funny thinking back that these eelus prints caused such a stir.

Not buying more at those early Santas Ghetto shows but advising friends too!

Learning Curves, by redfred on Oct 23, 2007 18:04:44 GMT 1, I recall haggling over paying £800 for a signed GWB, the seller eventually got fed up of me offering £750 and sold it to someone else. This was just over a year ago and it still haunts me.

Talk about bonus. ;D Kidding. I remember walking past Santa's Ghetto and wondering why so many people were queuing/milling around.

Learning Curves, by sausageboonwee on Oct 23, 2007 23:38:52 GMT 1, Spending ages trying to decide which Soup Can to go for - even printing off copies as a process of elimination. I went through the whole ordering process and hesitated at the thought of being £200 down for the rest of the month. After all that they suddenly went.
Haunts me to this very day. I will get one though, it's become an obsession. Anyone want to swap for a Neate WSP?

Learning Curves, by BME on Oct 24, 2007 11:17:01 GMT 1, I was offered a Simon Munnery/ Banksy panel for 600 quid. I couldn't quite get the cash together at the time and didn't want to use the credit card. I haven't seen one anywhere for about 18 months but dread to think what it would go for now!

Learning Curves, by pkt75 on Oct 25, 2007 14:04:17 GMT 1, I bought a D*Face embroided tenner for £123 Framed. Although I love it, shortly after, Stolenspace give the first ten in the cue for 'WWAF' a free one. I'd say at least half of those went on EBay and ended up goin for £40-£60 quid. I dont think I'd even get that for it now. Although, still a novice, thanx to this forum, i'm not as much as I was then.
