Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by mwjm0 on Oct 23, 2007 10:13:26 GMT 1, nice post thanks. this is the only type of thing supertouch write about banksy / micallef. for some reason they can't wait for prices to crash. i think they're jealous the uk is running things. what 'unknown' (as they desrcibed micallef) american artist could come over here and sell paintings for £100k+? None!

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by stenz1 on Oct 24, 2007 11:31:57 GMT 1, I read the article, and did agree with some of his points......I think the street art market is well overheated and there is a lot of imitators out there with not enough talent or ideas................work that you wouldn't want to hang on your wall b/c its depressing................................but quality will always have value ie banksy/faile/eine.................... I'm sure the same things were being 1980s New York when Basquiat and Keith Haring were doing their thing on walls and canvas.................I'm sure a few people got rich from them

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by sham69 on Oct 24, 2007 13:16:28 GMT 1, Somewhere along the line Supertouch, while on holiday shopping with his mum and dad, obviously passed on buying a piece of Banksy at Santa's Ghetto. Consequently, he wants the whole thing to come down like a pack of cards to make him feel better. Dream on. While Banksy's made it to the upper echelons, he's not the first street artist and he certainly won't be the last. Contemporary art is the current cash cow as far as the big boy's auctions go, they're going to want to ride it for all it's worth. Today's discerning art buyer wants something more than an 'old master.' I for one still feel like this is ground zero. Is there any art out there that is more exciting?

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by BME on Oct 24, 2007 16:03:52 GMT 1, Not a particularly insightful piece IMO. Banksy prices (particularly for originals) are peanuts when compared to those paid for works by other high profile contemporary artists.
It's the print market that has propelled Banksy (and more recently Micallef/ Neate) to the fore. Now for a few hundred quid you can have a screenprint by one of the world's premier artists on your wall. I think that's a pretty good deal.

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by nacional on Oct 24, 2007 16:31:00 GMT 1, There is a lot out there, but people, rightly or wrongly is another matter entirely, are reluctant to name names or give a Jack Boweresque "Head's Up" for fear that their favoured artiste will be bought up en masse and suddenly they will be priced out of the market.
This is not a finger pointing and wagging, like I did in, I hope, a light hearted way, a few weeks ago (got me only 7 respects offa the back of it so somebody must have been amused) as in a mea cupla way I plead guilty to this also. I have a luverly source of originals that I am picking up for about 250 quid each. Shockingly brilliant stuff: constructivist street art if such a thing exists. But, you would have to prise the "where from?" out of my dead and rotting fingers as if i tell there would be such a run on it that I would be only left with memories.
I fully expect to be negged for the above, but, sorry guys its true.

nacional you sound like Gollum. Do you call them 'my precious'? come on now, where's the love? What's the point in valuing something if you can't share it?

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by nacional on Oct 24, 2007 17:35:54 GMT 1, I agree with you all.
I also love the Gollum reference.
I have mentioned it implicitly in other threads and it has lately been snapped up by Eyestorm.
This is what is called dramatic tension...

Shes not unknown. She was part of the USA Today Saatchi Exhibition in London last year (or maybe even this year). Shes much more attractive than her art.

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by jamesreeve5 on Oct 24, 2007 21:18:43 GMT 1, You're right mwjm0... but shes young and her prices skyrocketed much like Banksy and AM, but it seems to be justifiably acceptable because it's not street art. In the grand scheme of things, the art world needs to stop acting so shocked when a Banksy or Micallef sells at auction.
and yes KB is amazing... looking

Overheated and inflated prices? Article on Banksy, by patrese on Oct 25, 2007 13:22:56 GMT 1, banksy prices are only 'inflated' compared to where they came from, but this doesn't tell the whole story and in the grand scheme of things, prices don't seem to be so lofty compared with prices of other leading contemporary artists...
