Shitting my pants is an understatement, by jipsy on Oct 13, 2007 10:27:47 GMT 1, I just got one of my Banksy prints back from the framers today and it's a bit of a mess. This print has been in its original POW tube since purchase at santa's grotto. Looking straight on it looks fine but from the side there are 1 or 2 clearly visible "ripples" or crests and dips" on the paper. They don't affect the image but it's off putting all the same. Is this due to it's period of storage in it's tube? What can be done to remedy this?

Shitting my pants is an understatement, by absyrd on Oct 13, 2007 10:35:31 GMT 1, The fibers that make up the paper need to be "relaxed" before completely flattening a print out, especially if the print was rolled in the direction of the grain. I assume this was just taken out and heavy objects put on the corners after its long life in a tube.
A professional restorer (well-insured) would be your best bet if the print is of some value. If you don't mind experimenting yourself, you can just use a piece of newsprint and a bonefolder to try to work out little creases.

Shitting my pants is an understatement, by ABC on Oct 13, 2007 10:46:30 GMT 1, As J states you should have given it to the framers flat as if you don't they will frame direct from the tube which IMO is not a good thing. Normally they will let it stand for 2 weeks if they are in the know. I would take it out of the frame and put it in a sleeve, then place under weight flat for a few weeks to let it settle, beats paying a restorer from the off.

Shitting my pants is an understatement, by jipsy on Oct 13, 2007 14:44:39 GMT 1, thanks for the advice. I've been back and it seems they framed it straight from the tube. It's out of the frame now and will be given the chance to "relax". Cost a fuckin fortune to frame as well.

Shitting my pants is an understatement, by Art-el on Oct 13, 2007 15:37:26 GMT 1, This a subject I have ocd about.
If something I've bought comes tubed I remove it straight away if at all possible. You will be able to tell imeadiately how long it's been in there, if it's been printed, shipped and dispatched in a short timescale then it will go relatively flat straight away.
Always a good test for anyone who claims that it's been stored flat!
Anything that has been tubed for a while I leave to unfurl for at least 14 days before covering in acid free tissue paper and weighting down.
It's up to you but an example is my Judgement day which was purchased at SG. I bought it in April this year and it came out of the tube in August. I left it to unroll for a month and at present is stored flat.
At present it has been flat for a couple of months now (and i would now be happy to frame it)
It will be staying flat for a while longer, not due to my ocd but down to lack of framing funds!

Shitting my pants is an understatement, by pw on Oct 13, 2007 15:51:42 GMT 1, i believe that the cardboard used in most postal tubes is rather acidic. i don't know how this might affect a print that is touching the cardboard for a long time but its something to think about...

It will ( eventually after quite a long period of time )leave brown marks on the parts of the print that touches the tube but of course only on the back of the print. If people need ( for whatever reason to leave prints in a tube best to wrap both sides in acid free tissue paper.

Shitting my pants is an understatement, by Francis on Oct 13, 2007 20:41:43 GMT 1, You know...those "1 or 2 clearly visible 'ripples' or crests and dips'" could be due to the mounting of the print. Do you know how they mounted it? Adhesive tape? Stripes?

sounds to me like 'flag'. mine is exactly the same, i took the tim to allow it to relax but it will show up even the most minute imperfection, bear that in mind if you come to buy one peeps .
