2007 - a review, by pezlow on Oct 15, 2007 13:52:05 GMT 1, Ok bit bored at work so I thought I would set down my general views on what has happened this year to date. These are my own personal views and some are there to prompt debate
The scene in general
I know that Nu hates us using the word "the scene" but I can't really think up a better word so until someone comes up with a better one I will start here.
Cast your minds back, if you will to Santas Ghetto 2006 and look how far the scene has come since then. We have new printhouses like Blackratpress and Papermonster, we have loads of new members of this forum, countless shows to enjoy and lots of jaigermeisters to be consumed.
There has also been an increased maturity in the scene and considerably more commercialism and cynicism introduced. This has meant that for a number of artists they have seen their star wane quite considerably (more below) whilst a number of other artists have seen an absolutely stellar rise into the contemporary art world (more below).
Dates
Here are a few dates that leap out at me:
26 January 2007 - Faile store re-opens with loads new prints retailing at $100 to $250. Although a lot of stuff is sold straight away there are still prints to buy (at these prices) a week later.
5 February 2007 - POW reopens. Cue collective print buying madness. Eine prints that have been for sale for 3 years sell out in minutes. Eric the dog prints all disappear before you know it. POW "find" some more micallefs that disappear in seconds. Everything sells.
February 2007 - group show at Elms. Three Adam Neate prints released for cost of between £550 and £700. They take about a week to sell out.
February 2007 (?) - Black rat press launches
Early March - Faile show at laz - sudden increase in prices of faile work on ebay. Go figure.
Early March 2007 - POW release Black Mona by Nick walker which sells out in about an hour.
14 March 2007 - Faile releases prints from their site. They are between $200 and $550 and all sell out in seconds. There are lots of oversolds which Faile, in their wonderful way, honour.
29 March 2007 - POW release morons at the wrong time. Site crashes dramatically. Sepia number 62 goes walkabout. More hysteria and wailing and gnashing of teeth.
8 July 2007 - SoS release Shell Blood for Oil by Beejoir. Cue huge increase in prices of Beejoir prints on ebay.
Late July 2007 - Found show at TLSG. Cue huge increase in prices of Mantis and Beejoir prints on ebay.
August - Adam Neates - Painting Pots and Prints show. An artistic tour de force.
28 August 2007 - Faile release new prints from their site costing between $600 and $2100. Everything sells in seconds.
September 2007 - Micallef show "Impure Idols" in LA. Fights, overnights and s**tes in the queue at Laz.
October 2007 - Paper Monster launches
?? October 2007 - POW release trollies???
The winners
Okay this is just my view of the artists on the up:
Banksy - A quiet year for him in the early part of the year but he has bounced back now with some fantastic street work.
Micallef - He has become extremely rich off sales of his artwork this year. But IMHO that may a little bit at the sake of his artistic integrity. Impure Idols was a bit of a mixed bag.
Adam Neate - this has been the year for adam. It's impossible to imagine what has happened to this artist this year. At the age of 29 he has secured total artistic freedom for the rest of his career. He is now experimenting and good luck to him.
Swoon - Of course swoon has been around a long while. But she has had a great year and I suspect 2008 could be stellar for her.
Jose Parla - Paul at elms told me that whatever original parlas he gets he sells straight away.
Faile - The timeline above will give anyone a good idea but what a year for faile. Amazing stuff.
Eine - perhaps not with so much fanfare Eine is gradually positioning himself in the contemporary art world. Articles in the new Art World magazine and a deal with a big gallery attest to that.
The losers
Dface - I don't personally feel Dface has moved on much. I don't see much originality in his work. A year ago he was probably in the top 3 or 4 in the movement. Now I would say there are quite a few above him.
Nick Walker - I actually don't think Nick is a loser as such as he has definitely kept it real, doing lots of street work and the like. But he has failed to take full advantage of his potential and has released some pretty average stuff this year.
Dan Baldwin - A meteoric rise and perhaps a catastrophic fall?
Eelus - perhaps the biggest fall from grace of them all. A genuinely nice guy whose inability to get his prints to market has led to huge frustration for his fans who have, quite simply, moved on.
Mantis - Ineed was great, AFD was good, Evolution was poor and the latest one is dreadful.
Who knows
Beejoir - I'd love Beejoir to really succeed. He is one of the nicest guys in the scene and is very talented. I think his career has hit a cross roads now and will probably be defined by his show in December. Fingers crossed.
Just a few thought to prompt debate....

gr8 post Pez... Blu , Banksy and Dolk have given me my favourite street pieces this year and Neate by a mile the best prints....and now we wave him goodbye at least for the forseeable future to the 'proper' *super expensive world of originals buying...but at least Elms will be there to go and look at his new works
2008 could well be Beejoirs determined by his show (with others) in January...I'm looking forward to Mau Mau particularly who'll be exhibiting with him

Feb 2007 > now the power of the banksy forum reaches new heights.
Dan B ,although having been producing good work for some time " suddenly " hits the raidar of some and is touted as the next big thing .
the baggers move in but then start to offload his prints often at a loss.
NW - Still in my opinion is underated or does that simply mean that he has a loyal fan base and has stayed free of the histeria in the buy / sell secondary market.
oh and don't forget Zbiok !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Defining moment of 2007 has to be the unhealthy obsession of the F5 / POW down scenario !

Ditto what Andy'77 says regarding Eine.
Thinking back, there was the opening of HMP too and the luke warm reception to the first Dolk's from them, and then a strange love/hate reaction to Girl With Teddy Bear.

2007 - a review, by manchestermike on Oct 15, 2007 14:17:31 GMT 1, Pretty much in agreement, there are also a lot of other artists coming up on the rails, Small, Choe, Harrington etc who could easily break into the big time.
The thing with this "scene" is that it is still very new, still developing. Some artists will make it huge (and I don't mean huge on these forums, huge in a real world sense) and some will make small impacts of varying degrees. A lot (i.e. most) will fall away, for every true "talent" out there hundreds of others are trying to make it... they'll sell bits and bobs, but it's never going to be their true calling...
I look at it (as I look at most things) like music... there are 1000s of DJs out there, some have broken through, they've made it, every night they play sells out, they command £10000+ easily for sets, people like Sasha, Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia... these are the Banksy, the Micallef, the Neate...
Then you've got others, DJs who have also been around for years, they play the circuit, they'll never be a massive name, but you know of them, the Judge Jules, the Darren Emerson, the Nick Warren... they'll make a living, but will never break into the top echelons... step forward EINE, D*Face, Nick Walker
Then you've got the fantastic artists who are on the cusp, go the right way and they can break into the top group, or the second group - they just need the right push, for James Zabiela and Hernan Cattaneo read Matt Small and Conor Harrington
You've got your journeyman DJs, making a living from a small but loyal fanbase, they do ok. Plump DJs, DJ Hell, Miss Kittin etc... you've got Blek, Invader, maybe Dolk and so on...
Then you've got the resident DJs in the main clubs, they're often working along with another job, trying to get their break... they probably won't but they'll make a few quid on the side, your Static, Mantis, Eelus
Then you've got Dave Pearce... Dave Pearce is Hutch

2007 - a review, by mcnuts on Oct 15, 2007 14:19:18 GMT 1, 2008 could well be Beejoirs determined by his show (with others) in January...I'm looking forward to Mau Mau particularly who'll be exhibiting with him
i'd take issue with that. I dont get beej and think a lot of his stuff has been pumped up by forum hype and raised to its levels as part of the rising tide of the street art trend.
While he has mastered the art of juxtaposition, I think much of his stuff is too simplistic and doesn’t have the subtlety and layers that banksy does (who does anyway). I have respect for him as an artist and someone who works on the street but I really think there is a lot of hype particularly by people who have invested in him (not saying you carlito, no idea what you own of his). I'd also fold Mantis into my generalisation as well...
Anyway, I’m a bit cynical and could go on more but will leave it at that. If ppl want to neg me for stating my opinion so be it but want to get my £0.02 out there

fair play I think saying 2008 could be his...was well a bit over the top...he could certainly breakthrough...but time will tell..and there's plenty of others I guess particularly Choe with his Laz show who could make a far bigger impact...
everything I own of Chris's cost me a hundred or so luckily it falls into ' no need' to hope he explodes for me

2007 - a review, by slowmo on Oct 15, 2007 14:31:54 GMT 1, Good post. But I think Dface has actually grown a lot in stature this year, eyecons was received well and he has been busy with output, selling his work well and also has come up with some quality street work, particularly the Punked CCTV camera and the missile in the ground outside stolen space. Not to mention the little 3d dface images that popped up early in the new year.
I think a mention of a man of great promise who never really brought it on in 2007 would be Conor Harrington, a great show at LAZ late in 2006 with some truly great work, I think the stolenspace work was not as good, the summer show appeared to be a painting of Ian botham. He also has a print out that has been available for so long that with the way prints have increased in cost this year, no longer seems as expensive as when it was initially released.

2007 - a review, by romanywg on Oct 15, 2007 14:38:51 GMT 1, I have a similar view of 'the scene' as manchestermike has, although my analogy would be with the Punk scene. For Malcolm Mclaren read Steve Lazarides. Banksy is the Sex Pistols and therefore Blek would be Richard Hell (The original punk) Then the Clash (Faile), Damned (D*Face), Buzzc**ks (Eine) came along and were later joined by Adam and the Ants, Siouxsie, The Jam and a whole diverse cross section of dissalusioned youth, read other up and coming 'new wave artists'. All the punk bands had picture sleeves for their first records to help sell them as they were small editions, read limited edition art prints. The similarities are endless but I have to get back to work....
Malcolm Mclaren quote “Stealing things is a glorious occupation, particularly in the art world.”

2007 - a review, by barry cilit on Oct 15, 2007 14:52:31 GMT 1, I have a similar view of the scene, but compare it as you will to the 18th century Victorian carpet rollers and the various competing house hold appliances at the time.
Banksy is obviously the Edwinson where as the likes of Dface and Baldwin could be seen as the Manual Cutherson or the Wilkinson carpeteer.

2007 - a review, by Harveyn on Oct 15, 2007 14:53:57 GMT 1, Good post Pez.
I agree with most except I think DFace has had a great year. Also as Mike has said there are some up rising stars such as Small that I think could have a great year next year.
Overall my memories will have to be of the first time I saw the posts for Neate's show at the Elms. I am unlikely ever to own one of his originals but I must say never have I got so much pleasure from pieces I do not own and never have I coveted work quite like his. Words fail me when it comes to describing the quality of his work and what he might go onto achieve.
I would also add that Blu and Ethos have produced some unbelievable street pieces and whilst their work does not always translate to print they have had a fantastic year.
Whilst not associated with the street seen I do think Mr Denning has had a greart year and is set for a bumper year next year.

2007 - a review, by jfury on Oct 15, 2007 14:55:22 GMT 1, Also don't forget Guy Denning - he has been an artist for 20 years and now this year his work has really taken off (I think he was still working full time at a hospital until this year?) - so he seems to have really been a winner this year - every orginal released has sold instantly and his prints have gone pretty sharpish aswell - I am sure the same thing will happen at his November show.
Defo agree about conor harrington...His stuff is superb - he has a show in Dec I think so again I think we will see some more top stuff.

That predictions thread is interesting reading now. Did I really say Stanley Donwood would hit the bigtime ? ! ?

2007 - a review, by jonpud on Oct 15, 2007 15:06:32 GMT 1, Sadly nothing to debate as I agree with all you have said, I don't really dig Neate but can't argue about him being a talented artist, and such a shame about Eelus/Nick Walker. However I don't think we have heard the last of them yet!! Jeeeez, how can you neg me for that comment!! Come out and show yourself you p*ick!! Art is about debate, I am not a fucking sheep that buys a name just because its a fucking name and everyone tells me I've got to buy into it!! My views on Neate are pretty well known, he aint my cup of tea but I can see that the guy is well talented! You are entitled to your own views as I am mine, doesn't mean I have to accept everything you like!! Grow up and realize that art is there for EVERYONE to appreciate in their own way!! Rant over!
