"Cooling of the Art Market", by slowmo on Oct 16, 2007 9:11:45 GMT 1, How about the other side of the coin, 80% of all art on show at Frieze was sold on preview night. So it would seem that people are putting their money into new work more than established artists. (source from my wife who as part of her job with the Courtauld had a curator from frieze give a guided tour to her members).
To me that is good news, as money that previously was going on buying the prestige works of the select few (and very often dead), was only lining the pockets of collectors. Now it seems there is a big push to invest in up and coming artists too. This is good news for the up and comings, as it gives them much needed money to focus on their art with more time and freedom, although admittedly a lot of well established artists sold a lot of work too.
Tate have acquired a large amount of new space (not sure where), this was the interesting part of frieze for me. To fill it they are expanding their eastern european collection, virtually every large piece of installation art (often awful) from the region seemed to have been bought by them at the show.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by uksnowman on Oct 16, 2007 9:25:07 GMT 1, Maybe the fallout of the subprime mortgage market will have an effect on the price of a cup of coffee now too. It is being blamed on everything else! I'm personally sick of hearing about this.
If as the rumour goes the city don't give out bumper bonuses partly because of this, and the top end art market takes a dip - whoopy doo. There will still be a vast amount of affordable art and quality artists who won't stop churning out work just because of an economic cycle. At least it will bring the price of banksy pieces back down to earth.
Sorry for going slightly off topic!

"Cooling of the Art Market", by trowel on Oct 16, 2007 13:16:43 GMT 1, As ever, Laz sees things a little differently:
Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Graffiti works by Banksy and lower- priced Western art by Gerhard Richter and Matthew Barney sold at or above Sotheby's top estimates in London yesterday, indicating continuing demand by collectors who haven't lost money in the financial markets. Italian artists Giorgio Morandi and Alberto Burri also beat their top estimates.
...
"I have customers in the media and luxury businesses, so I haven't been affected by the fallout in the City,'' said Banksy dealer Steve Lazarides, who bought three of the artist's pictures yesterday.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by bobbymeachamjr on Oct 16, 2007 15:04:59 GMT 1, no shame or integrity - lets make "art" with images of anti- govt / corporation pro environment and sell it to those very "luxury" heads who are the very targets of said images.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by endtimes on Oct 16, 2007 15:20:20 GMT 1, Why was there never any criticism when they were plugging and hyping up the art market for the past 5 years. Is it because all yo uguys benefited too? Say something negative or simply "rational" and you get the ire of the whole forum.
It's ok though because it might mean an end to flipping ;D isn't that what every one wants? A world where prints don't sell out in seconds because of the profit motivator? I don't get you guys? You hate flippers but any language that doesn't talk up the price of your prints you rag on. Catch-22?
I think a lot of these new galleries and print shops are going to really suffer when people stop buying every SOS or BRP print or whatever because they might not be able to resell it for profit. Also if people can't resell their Banksy for thousands in profit they won't have all that extra money for secondary artists too.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by trebor on Oct 16, 2007 15:32:20 GMT 1, The art market that 99% of people on here are involved in won't be affected one little bit, I know if the stock market bottomed and there was a massive credit squeeze I'd still have 100 quid to spend on a print.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by endtimes on Oct 16, 2007 15:34:13 GMT 1, Do you really think the hundreds of "cheap" galleries and print shops that opened up in the past 12 months would exist if they didn't ride the wave of Banksy and the profits too?

"Cooling of the Art Market", by sham69 on Oct 16, 2007 15:51:01 GMT 1, Can somebody tell me, is anyone except for Laz buying the Banksy stuff at auction?
Or is it Laz simply creating an artificial price level for the work. For an analogy, it might be a band manager, say Malcolm McClaren, going round buying round buying loads of Pistols singles to get them in the charts.
Any thoughts?

"Cooling of the Art Market", by endtimes on Oct 16, 2007 15:57:23 GMT 1, You guys wake up on the wrong side of the bed?
It is the truth though ain't it? Doesn't mean we're all doomed. I never said that, you guys did. But if I opened up a new gallery to try and ride the wave this year, I'd be nervous, that's for sure.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by Curley on Oct 16, 2007 16:18:34 GMT 1, Once again we are back to this talk of money...... its dull and boring and quite frankly detracts from some great art and some great banter whilst waiting for the next release.
I know the value of my art can go down as well as up but frankly i actually like what i bought and i am happy with it on my walls.
So where's the problem....?

"Cooling of the Art Market", by endtimes on Oct 16, 2007 16:24:15 GMT 1, No one is making you or anyone read this. Anyway you can interpret it as doom or gloom, as a positive or as BS. I don't care. Just don't blame your inflections on me.
Personally I think it's funny how many people "complain" about the "complaining." Pot calling the kettle black looks like to me.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by carlito on Oct 16, 2007 16:27:11 GMT 1, I didn't neg you, I don't care enough. Prints are affordable by the way, you just need to look at other sites, would you be one of those people who think the art world revolves around the artists discussed on this forum by any chance? I bought a four foot original the other day for $1000, amazing piece that makes a lot of my pieces by the artists discussed here look weak but I'm not about to post up who the artist for flippers and moans to jump on the bandwagon.
I know loads of Artists who are much better than Banksy Micallef and Neate..but i'll be fucked if i'll tell any of you flippers ;D ;D ;D
(think most of us realise there's a big old world of Art out there other than what is talked about on here, but you've got to remember this Forum is errrr pretty specific..the name kinda gives it away...)

Bragging about some painting you got for $1000 instead of talking about the artist. And you won't talk about the artist because you want to keep your prize to yourself. Who cares.

"Cooling of the Art Market", by leumasdarnley on Oct 16, 2007 16:31:59 GMT 1, I would like too see the what they think about 2 weeks before XMas with the new Banksy's and Micallef going on ebay like hot cakes. The market isn't as big as a lot of people think IMO so add a crap load of MIcallef Prints a new Banksy or even the idea of a new Banksy and people are going to dump stuff to pay off the set of 4 they bought at Laz and not everyone is ready to ponce on items they normally would consider on eBay in hopes of getting a signed Banksy. So is the market going south or just momentarily saturated. I know that I have been following this scene a little over a year and down swings are small VERY temporary just my 2 cents.
