Digital Cameras, by goffy on Oct 5, 2007 15:22:16 GMT 1, I am looking to buy a digital camera to take on holiday next week, has anyone got any suggestions or can point me the way of any review sites? Nothing to expensive, something around 140 quid.
Cheers.

Digital Cameras, by jtk on Oct 5, 2007 15:39:00 GMT 1, dpreview.com has some good information. Canon SD Elphs (not sure what the UK version is) are probably the most popular in the States, and tests show that they perform well on all levels.

Digital Cameras, by corblimeylimey on Oct 5, 2007 15:43:25 GMT 1, I like Nikon's myself, it was my wifes compact that I took to found (saves carring the big heavy and expensive one)
check here for range and price
www.pricerunner.co.uk/cl/29/Digital-Cameras?sort=3&price_max=150&man_id=326
Try to get a model that comes with a Lithium rechargable battery, rather than one that uses standard AA type batteries, Lithium type lasts a lot longer.
5 or 6 megapixel is adequate enough for most, but check out this one Nikon CoolPix P4 it's 8 megapixel and has a Lithium battery (according to Price Runner, check that fact out for sure before buying) and it's only £117 from www.ebuyer.com/product/107504 including delivery. www.ebuyer.com/ is good for SD cards etc too.

and if you're planning on doing some video (if the camera allows) make sure you get a fast memory.
I just bought a Kingston 2gig 50x speed SD for less than £20 inc delivery from ebuyer.com

Digital Cameras, by absyrd on Oct 5, 2007 17:09:43 GMT 1, I am no photography expert, but here are a few tips that I developed after buying two different cameras recently:
1. The smaller the camera, generally the longer time between shots. If you ever need to take shots in succession, you may get frustrated. You can help this by getting an Extreme or Ultimate SD card... they save your pics faster. You won't be able to click super fast without an SLR type camera anyways, so just do the best you can with this.
2. Sometimes too many features is a bad thing. On those smaller cameras with the auto red-eye, antiblur, etc, sometimes they are TOO smart for what you need. For example, antiblur may help you steady your hand when taking close pics of your art, but it may not cancel out the blur as you snap a pick of the guy who is running away stealing it. Another camera will do the opposite. With the red-eye, sometimes there are like 5 flashes. Telling your family at the reunion not to move until the 5th or 6th flash is done may be quite annoying. These all differ from camera to camera, but my advice is to not spend tons of extra money on these unless you have a specific use in mind and can control the situations.
3. Don't get anything below a 6 megapixel. Also, don't let someone convince you that you need 10. 7 or 8 will do most anyone fine for a long time.
4. Optical (not digital) zoom is something that many people overlook. The cheaper Cybershots, Elphs, etc only have 3x. That means if you want to get a crisp picture of that new Banksy up on a rooftop ledge, you may lose some quality. The more optical zoom, the less you have to zoom and crop later. 3x is good enough for most things, but I'd go 4 or higher.
With $300 (about 140 quid these days), you should be able to grab a camera from a reputable company with 7 megapixel or higher and 4x or more zoom. I think Sony makes a higher-end cybershot (which are cool with the Zeiss glass lens as opposed to everyone else's plastic) with more optical zoom than 3x... not sure though.

Digital Cameras, by goffy on Oct 5, 2007 17:30:51 GMT 1, Thanks for the input guys.
Unfortunately, because of the poor downtrodden postal workers, I won't be able to buy online as the camera wouldn't be here before I go.
Nu, In this poll I voted Labour.

Digital Cameras, by Dead Elvis on Oct 5, 2007 23:36:28 GMT 1, Do not buy anything other than a Canon or Nikon when it comes to point & shoot. These 2 brands have the best glass. Trust me, I shoot advertising for a living. I have a Canon SD700 for "fun" and it is top-notch. Canon have something better by now as I bought it last year. Nikon makes a bunch of good SLR's (D70/D80/D200/D300) for the novice/advanced/anything shot outdoors. If you're doing anything beyond that, Canon is the way to go. It is the industry standard. Get a few 2GB SD cards to stick in it and you'll be ready to go. Buying from Amazon will probably still be cheaper with 2 or next day air compared to a big-box retailer or camera store...

Digital Cameras, by doughy on Oct 6, 2007 2:04:51 GMT 1, Canon or Nikon agreed.
On the video side, if you want this facility, make sure it has 30fps, good quality video from a camera.
And also least 1gb memory card is needed, I take loads on my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, , but cost me £360 when averone else was selling them at £500, so I used a price comparison site Pricerunner.
Buy a camera mag as a rough guide too.

Online will definitely be the cheapest way to go.....maybe you can pick something up locally with a good return policy.
If you like it after your trip, keep it, if not........return it, do a little more research and grab something else.

Digital Cameras, by romanywg on Oct 6, 2007 9:07:15 GMT 1, Can't beat my Canon IXUSi. Infact I like it so much I bought another one on the bay a couple weeks ago for £60. My wife bought me the more expensive 6 magapixel Canon but the cheaper one is far better. Small and easy to use. Here are some photos. www.flickr.com/photos/romanywg/

I've got a Nikon D80 (having just upgraded from a D70) yes they are great, but sometimes you just want a small handy camera, I often borrow my wifes Nikon Coolpix compact it does a good job, it's not always practical to carry around the much bigger, heavier and expensive SLR camera.

Digital Cameras, by dotdot on Oct 7, 2007 16:12:39 GMT 1, if you want something small - and simple - checkout a panasonic Lumix FX01 nice machine. (wide lens (28mm equiv) sells it for me)
Something larger but not too bulky ? check out the Canon Powershot S2 IS or S3 IS... i bought an S2 for around 120quid about 5months ago to go on holiday - no problems.
If you want a DSLR - ... well I dont have one so can't advise you...
I echo what other have said about pixels.. dont let anyone sell you 7,8,9,or 10s they're probaby more than what you'd need if you simply want something simple that does the job.
have fun and don't forget - don't use anyone who uses Citylink to deliver - the ARE the WORST DELIVERY COMPANY in the UK... (in my experience..)
