Boobs & Tattoos , by insite on Oct 2, 2007 11:12:40 GMT 1, Right now I've got your attention ;D. There is a loose Banksy connection but I thought this was a good cause (and a nice calender) so here's a thread to promote it. New York-based model-turned-publisher Dawn Geary, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year at the age of 26, responded to this challenge in part by founding a project called Seul Contre Tous—roughly translated as "I stand alone," which "is the feeling many women have" when they face this disease, she says. "It's that overwhelming sense of personal focus and reflection," and the French cast of the name is intended to suggest "an eloquent high-fashion aesthetic" that will help propel the project's artistic aims. Geary indeed stands together with a variety of artists in Seul Contre Tous, which has produced a 2008 "Art for a Cure" pinup calendar based on traditional tattoo imagery—"tattooing permeates breast cancer in so many ways," she says. "Most of the survivors I've met have gotten tattoos once their cancer is in remission, and tattoos are also used as a cosmetic healing process."
The calendar features the photography of Dale May, whose images are paired with painted reinterpretations of the pinups by tattoo artist Seth Wood. "We chose models who represent a myriad of ethnicities and shapes—some have tattoos, some don't," says Geary. "We wanted to celebrate the beauty of women and also get the subtle message across that all of these women are diverse—breast cancer can affect anyone. It's an equal opportunity offender, so we need to take action."
The calendar launch party and show opening is Sept. 29, 7 p.m., at Williamsburg's Saved Gallery, 3 Hope St., which is not so coincidentally owned by tattoo artist/designer Scott Campbell of Mama Tried Studios. All 12 of Dale May's calendar images will be for sale as 20 x 20 prints at the opening, and the accompanying group show, which runs through Nov. 1, features work by a host of artists including the notorious Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Chris Garver of TLC's Miami Ink, and Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl and Gorillaz fame. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the calendar as well as 100 percent of gallery commissions on art sold at the show will go to Seul Contre Tous' charitable partners, according to Geary. Seen here are two photographs from the calendar. www.seulcontretous.net/ www.dalemayphotography.com/ www.sethwoodtattoo.com/
I like this one, purely for the artistic aesthetic obviously

Boobs & Tattoos , by curiousgeorge on Oct 2, 2007 11:50:55 GMT 1, I took far too long to type this reply;)
So many worthy causes appearing lately, and it would seem without quality being an issue. Might take some work getting this past the other half, still trying to to talk her into allowing me some Spencer Tunick stuff

Boobs & Tattoos , by doughy on Oct 2, 2007 12:59:02 GMT 1, Sorry, skipped straight passed the text and looked at the pics., what did you say? ;D
On a serious note, a very worthwhile cause, I have seen through a friend what this disease makes you feel like, and it isn't nice, so demoralising and vicious on the person. Glad to say my friend has so far made it through, and feels better in herself now.
Best of luck in their sales, I wish them all the success they need. Beautifully staged shots too.
