Acceptable time to sell art, by Deleted on Oct 5, 2007 2:29:45 GMT 1, Hi,
I'm relatively new to the forum, but I've seen a lot of banter about flippers. I was wondering what the forum thought would be an acceptable time to sell after acquiring a piece? The reason why I ask is because I've seen people point out how newer prints are being flipped on ebay, but not so much when they're sold on a forum.
In my opinion, I think there will always be extenuating circumstances, BUT, I think after the 1 year mark, people don't really think that a person is "flipping". thoughts?

Acceptable time to sell art, by wlsp4657 on Oct 5, 2007 2:59:12 GMT 1, I think it is always ok to sell work that you collect. The people I have a problem with are the ones who only buy and sell to make money. These people don't care at all about the art or the artists, they are just in it to make a quick buck. As for the galleries, thats a different story. Many of these galleries are always buying and selling , but most of them are working on a collection and display the work and share it with the public. The buying/ selling aspect of galleries is very complex and I don't even want to get into it, some one who knows a little more might wanna explain that to you.

so you have problems with 98% of the "collectors"? Having it under the bed and trading/selling later is the same s*hit. Everybody who has been in this scene long enough will "accumulate" much more than they can "hang on the wall". Unless somebody actually comes out and sells one of their micallefs cost its all the same ol' s*hit...

Acceptable time to sell art, by Deleted on Oct 5, 2007 4:59:14 GMT 1, I can understand both sides of the argument. I think that for most people, buying/selling prints to build up "equity" for a higher priced print or original seems to be a proven pattern to get what you want. Anyway, I was curious as I haven't sold anything yet but wondered if I would get a virtual beatdown by my peers if I did
What about trades based on market value? Is that any different?

Acceptable time to sell art, by Deleted on Oct 5, 2007 7:15:52 GMT 1, Do what is right for you and you cant go far wrong. your never going to be able to please everyone. from what i have read most only really have problems with those who are only 'in it for the money'. i guess that most regular contributors to the forum are into art, so let them do what ever they want in terms of selling their collection.

Acceptable time to sell art, by Jonny Breaks on Oct 5, 2007 9:58:09 GMT 1, Personally i collect because i love the pictures on my walls but can honestly admit the rise in value is an very attractive bonus. At present i have work by Banksy, Micallef, Invader, Peter Blake, Hewlett etc. and have just put a deposit on a new Peter Blake so need to sell one of my other pieces to pay for it. The only way i would be able to afford it is by selling at market price on the bay...yeah im selling for a profit but as im trading up and not just selling for a quick buck i see no problem in this and wouldnt hesitate to do this in the future. Might not be the most ethical thing to do but im sure plenty of people have their reasons for selling their work other than a quick profit. I know my collction is roughly worth around 10-12k and its very comforting to know that if the sh*t hit the fan in my personal life it could be dippped into to make ends meet. i'd much rather have a roof over my head than nice collection of pictures.

for those that say 'if you're not selling at cost you're in it for the money', what bullsh*t. a flipper, which is what gets most people's back up, is someone who strolls up with no idea of who/what they're buying, sells it immediately and goes and spends the money on tickets to go tout. or something. drugs maybe. anyway, if you are selling a piece you would not otherwise be getting rid of in order to buy something new (art, not a plasma ) then fair play to you. at the end of the day if someone is willing to buy it then you have the fundemental ingredients of a sale.
a lot of people on this forum, myself included, have bought a piece then sold it in order to buy a new piece of art, sometimes that we wouldn't have otherwise have been able to afford. yes ethically it would be so nice to pass something on after you've had your fun but if there has been some appreciation in value it would be very naive to simply 'give' it away.

Acceptable time to sell art, by ABC on Oct 5, 2007 10:59:57 GMT 1, Sell what you want, It's yours to sell. We will always moan nothing will change that. I think the whole issue really comes down to availability. Collectors that want Banksy prints for the wall now have less chance of getting one due to professional flippers.

Acceptable time to sell art, by corblimeylimey on Oct 5, 2007 11:01:16 GMT 1, There's no rules on when you can sell and why or for how much, do what you like.
What upsets many here is (and it's been said a thousand times) the blatant buying with the purpose to sell immediately for profit by those who have no interest in the art except to make money.

Acceptable time to sell art, by collector on Oct 5, 2007 11:01:17 GMT 1, Whenever there is a debate about flippers a lot of people say they do not care about the art world and the artists they sell and have no interest in the scene. I imagine flipping prints is almost a full time profession for some people so they must be investing a lot of time and energy into the scene, OK not 100% positive but THEY ARE part of the scence.
I don't really have a major issue with flippers, if you miss a print (like I did recently when on holiday) I know I can always pick it up on eBay and the more flippers, the cheaper the prices.
With regard to timescale to sell, if the print is desirable and people missed out there will always be someone who hassles you for selling. Just do what you need to, I've sold stuff, purely to afford other peices. When I go to shows I speak with people and I've yet to meet anyone who does things differently. Remember you can't please everyone, even posting a response on this debate can earn you bad karma

Acceptable time to sell art, by spencerlee on Oct 5, 2007 12:44:20 GMT 1, As an aside, I hate lining the pockets of flippers, but sometimes it has to be done. I got outbid on something last week, and just had to buy it for double what he got it for from the person who beat me on it.
If I didn't get it off him, I know I would have had a hard time getting it in the future, and it's something I really wanted. Serves me right in some ways for not getting it the first time but it still galls.

Acceptable time to sell art, by BONGO on Oct 5, 2007 13:09:43 GMT 1, BONGO ASK
WHY ARE PEOPLE WILLING TO PAY 10 TIMES MORE FOR A NUMBERED BANKSY PRINT, WHEN EXACTLY THE SAME IMAGE CAN BE OBTAINED FOR A PITTANCE FROM THE GREY PRINT OVERRUN MARKET ?
BONGO THINK IF IT IS THE IMAGE YOU COVET, THEN THE BACKDOOR PRINT SHOULD SUFFICE
BONGO THINK THAT WHEN YOU ENTER THE FRAY OF TRYING TO ASSIGN A HIGHER MONETARY VALUE TO WHAT IS A PIECE OF SCREEN PRINTED PAPER WITH A NUMBER, THEN YOU HAVE TAKEN A POSTION OF QUESTION OF "WORTH", WHETHER THIS IS IMPLICIT OR EXPLICIT ACTION.
BONGO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY DICHOTOMY BETWEEN COLLECTOR AND TRADER EXIST - BOTH ARE PARTY TO THE SAME FORCES ONCE VALUE IS BROUGHT INTO DEBATE
BONGO THINK WHEN MONETARY VALUE IS ASSIGNED TO ART, THEN YOU CANNOT VIEW SAID ART WITH OBJECTIVITY ANY LONGER
BONGO APPRECIATE DEBATE ON THIS .
