Question about VAT, by ray on Sept 29, 2007 3:57:36 GMT 1, Sorry if this is in the wrong section but a very nice person contacted me and was pretty sure that VAT only applied to prints coming from the US into the UK and not original art. If anyone has had any experience with this and has a little time to spare answering my off topic question I'd be most grateful

afraid not and being a 'gift' (if the stated value is more than about £30 I think) makes no difference
customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_InfoGuides&%20propertyType=document&id=HMCE_CL_000199#P187_27111 (the click-on-the-link function isn't picking up the whole address, so copy/paste)
though as one of the following, it should qualify for the reduced 5% rate "provided that it had not been exported from the United Kingdom less than 12 months before the date of importation."
# Pictures, collages and similar decorative plaques, paintings and drawings, executed entirely by hand by the artist, other than plans and drawings for architectural, engineering, industrial, commercial, topographical or similar purposes, hand-decorated manufactured articles, theatrical scenery, studio back cloths or the like of painted canvas.
# Original engravings, prints and lithographs, being impressions produced in limited numbers directly in black and white or in colour of one or several plates executed entirely by hand by the artist, irrespective of the process or of the material employed by him, but not including any mechanical or photomechanical process
# Original sculptures and statuary, in any material, provided that they are executed entirely by the artist.
they don't always 'catch' it but VAT is due
even if it's 'loaned goods returned to owner' they can hit you with a returned goods fee (about £30 I think)

Question about VAT, by ray on Sept 30, 2007 15:43:18 GMT 1, It looks like it's 5% on art instead of the normal 17% then. Not great but better than 17%
