Urban Art hits the South West 21st/22nd Sept, by Run Pig Run on Sept 23, 2007 16:34:04 GMT 1, the point is to see these prints up close and have them framed the highest standard before you decide to buy them. i have spent hundreds on a print before and when I took it out of the tube i didn't like it, i have also seen prints i have not liked on the computer screen but liked in real life (M16 assault lolly) which after seeing it at art republic i now own. unfortunatly for them instead of spending £250 on it i simply went home and ordered it from POW for 64 quid.
This whole urban/street/stencil (whatever the fuck you call it) art scene is driven by the internet, 99% of the prints are bought on the internet i can't really see quite how this gallery/shop is going to fit in to be honest, unless it's stacked high and sold at a good price.
I enjoyed looking around and saw a few things i liked and i didn't have to watch people getting their head stamped on to do it.
I hope it works out for them

Urban Art hits the South West 21st/22nd Sept, by becksaboo on Sept 23, 2007 17:00:15 GMT 1, Yeah i get your point as i went to art republic recently and it ws nice to see them 'in the flesh' but the way it's gone in the last 6 months, you don't have that luxury anymore to think about it and in the long run, these galleries are pushing up the prices. I'd rather buy it from source and return it if I don't like it than see it first at a gallery, like it and then pay at least double for it. And if the TM was £2.5k then that's £1k more than what art republic currently wants.

Urban Art hits the South West 21st/22nd Sept, by cashman on Sept 23, 2007 17:43:51 GMT 1, These are by an artist called Tom Lewis... never heard of him but I really liked them. Giclee prints and really nicely framed. Tom will actually be at the gallery tomorrow for anyone that is popping down. The last pic is hand embellished too Art Junkie - I didn't recognise the name but I'm sure I've seen these before somewhere. There are lots of other bits and bobs there but I suggest you pop down there, see them for yourself and have a Perry Cider.
That Tom Lewis does some ok bits, but he's joined one of those agensies which means you can find his work in most 'Galleries' in SW. Its has a chocolate box/ postcard art generic feel to it

Urban Art hits the South West 21st/22nd Sept, by corblimeylimey on Sept 23, 2007 19:22:27 GMT 1, Thanks for the pics Johnas, only just found this thread again.
Tom Lewis had some prints in a gallery/framers in Totnes I visited a few weeks ago, check out his site
www.tomlewis.co.uk/print.htm
I saw 4 or 5 of his giclees and they were all very good quality except 'Summer can sometimes be lonely too you know.' which seemed a bit fuzzy, but the only two I was tempted by were... 'Put the kettle on Barry. It's going to be a long night' & 'Adrian is haunted by the neon ghosts of Tokyo' But I resisted.

Urban Art hits the South West 21st/22nd Sept, by monetfineart on Sept 24, 2007 9:03:58 GMT 1, Morning All! I'd like to thank everyone who came to support us for our show, the information, knowledge and feedback from everyone who came was second to none and for that we are very appreciative. I appreciate some peoples comments referring us as 'flippers' but please be rest assured this is most certainly not the case. For our first show we have had to shop around and get things as and where we can, I appreciate our TM may well be pricier than other sources but with little knowledge I probably paid more than I should have done, I am also aware that most of the works we have here are old releases but as a first show I think the exhibition as a whole looked exiting and different. We are hoping in the future to be working alongside artists, introducing more 'new' work into the gallery and hopefully one day be able to initiate releases through Monet Fine Art. We have explained right from the beginning we are very very new to this scene but we want to learn more and this is the direction we want to be heading. For too many years we have been 'led' by the big publishers and now we have to stand on our own two feet to survive. On a final note, anyone who was unable to make our show over the weekend the work will be hung for a further two weeks, gallery opening times Monday-Saturday 9.30am - 4.30pm. Once again a huge thanks to everyone who has supported us so far. Take Care Lisa Monet

without meaning to sound synical, U admit that your new to the scene but what drove you to it?? the money?? Maybe you should have learned more about the scene before gambling with your buisness? Without meaning to sound blunt, I wouldnt spend my money in a gallery where the sellar knows less about the artist im buying Your leaving yourself open to either charging too much for pieces or getting stung by under charging
either way, good luck & learn fast

Urban Art hits the South West 21st/22nd Sept, by monetfineart on Sept 24, 2007 15:59:51 GMT 1, We have been learning as much as we can since March when we started buying work in, we have worked with other people and read plenty about the artists we are selling and I can talk about the artists we have in the gallery... As far as gambling with our business, every thing you do in business is a gamble? You ask what drove us to change direction, - money? the answer to that is no, money did not come into it, we changed earlier this year after being stabbed in the back by publishers, we could either lie down and die or move on, we moved on, slowly, carefully but surely, we had to find something that no one else in this area was doing, at the same time as all this was going on I read an advert in the Western Daily Press stating that 'Banksy's' work should not be shown in a Fine Art Gallery, which got us to thinking 'why not', so since then we have been looking, learning, and buying - and decided this is the way to go, it's very exciting to find something so different compared to what we have known in the past. At the end of the day, everyone has to learn - you don't automatically know everything - I am sure you didn't know everything when you started collecting - yes at the end of the day, I may be leaving myself wide open, but after seven years in the art market and dealing with jumped up publishers and directors, I am pretty sure I will learn fast. The amount of people that arrived at our gallery on Saturday stated that the only TWO items that were overpriced was the Banksy's, that's not a problem to me, if they don't sell, they will be hung in my own property, with that in mind I am not doing too bad. - As for coming to our gallery, why not give it a go, everyone else enjoyed themselves, you may even be pleasantly surprised. Regards Lin - Monet Fine Art Gallery

Good luck with the venture..sorry about my earlier cynicism and yep.. going it alone is always a risk.. but like you say, much more exciting than relying on extrenal publishers etc.
