back to basics 1, by lesbianwednesdays on Sept 23, 2007 18:58:48 GMT 1, here is thread 1of 4, to concentrate on what micallef has released to us lot this week. the threads will be for the laz printsand POW's release, i've combined the uzi lovers in one thread and will kick things off with the improvised minotour.
i want as many of you as possible to post your opinions, good, bad or indifferent on respective images and what they say to you, what your first impressions were, how have they changed? would you like to look at it but not own it, would you like it your walls etc and so on.
for me i felt not a lot for this, having seen wisebloods extreme close-ups i have to admire the workmanship. i'd love for someone lucky enough to own a 21st CL, to have bought one, had it framed and placed them side by side. i think it would take on a greater context then and would really juxtupose each other, whilst being entirely complementry - an oxymoron, perhaps.

back to basics 1, by manty on Sept 23, 2007 19:42:14 GMT 1, I tried to buy one to go next to my 21CL, but missed out :-(
Even in the 80p plastic poster holder Laz had put it in to show it off, it still looked awesome, all the detail, and IMO wiped the floor of the other pieces, it would have looked very very nice on my wall with my 21CL and WCIP, but alas :-(

back to basics 1, by Existencil on Sept 23, 2007 19:46:40 GMT 1, For me, the draw of Micallef has always been that his stuff is so graceful. 21st Century Love is like the Minotaur in terms of colour & boldness, but it's just not as sexy. The Minotaur looks uncomfortable, almost a little forced, whereas the 21st Century Love seems comfortable & as if it was always meant to be there.

back to basics 1, by sausageboonwee on Sept 23, 2007 19:55:08 GMT 1, I appreciate the technique, I don't like the subject matter or overall composition. There are many other Micallefs I prefer. That includes "God". I think his edition sizes were too large. It would have been better to do a series of different prints with lower edition numbers - like Neate.

back to basics 1, by runningdog on Sept 23, 2007 19:58:26 GMT 1, Personally the only stuff I like is the angels with the smudgey faces, like Angel bombers. They're slightly disturbing and they're understated images. I just don't think he's very good at handling colours yet... But this is an artist who's been hyped up something stupid before his time, and still has a whole career ahead of him. Potential is immense, I hope he finds a good path. And dumps Laz.

back to basics 1, by savilerogue on Sept 23, 2007 20:02:34 GMT 1, For me, the guns stick out like a sore thumb. Looks like they were added as an afterthought, they just don't sit right with the rest of the image; in particular where they crudely meet with the arms.
I prefer the charcoals and the charming naivety of the girls with blurred faces.

yeah i agree with that stuey
also i think it would have looked better if the weapons were not extension of his arms, that looks so odd they don't join or blend with the arms at all (as you said savilarogue)

I prefer the deep charcoal micallefs. The charcoal heads seem effortless and beautiful whereas these seem a little restricted and unatural.

back to basics 1, by tokyojeff on Sept 24, 2007 1:03:58 GMT 1, For me it was the smudged face girl that drew me to AM. Somewhat unfinished and the charcoals as noted above make them much better IMO. However, as for the 4 new ones, I like this one the best. I'ts in your face and makes you feel or say something about it. Good or bad but makes you feel something.

back to basics 1, by meatbag on Sept 25, 2007 0:45:02 GMT 1, I think it loses it's appeal next to 21CL. That was such a incredible piece and this one is has to many similarities. I also agree that the composition seems aggressive and forced. Makes me keep thinking of Mr. T from the A Team show for some god awful reason. However that is why I particularly like UZ1. It's a bit more graceful, the composition is about motion which is kind of new to AM's work and it's doesn't have to many over the top corporate icons. Much more subtle but the colors and detail really pop. A lot of hype around peace keeper... a piece that I just don't seem to connect with for some reason.

back to basics 1, by jp on Sept 25, 2007 6:08:01 GMT 1, When I first saw this image it made me immediately think of 21st Century Love. The problem is, for me 21st Century Love can't be improved upon and should just be left alone. I'll never like this print because of that, even if it is supposed to have a different message.
I had a few people (who know nothing about Micallef) look at both images and the reaction is really amusing. Admiration for 21st (both men and women) and TOTAL disdain for Improvised Minotaur (especially women). Try it for yourself and see...
