back to basics 4, by lesbianwednesdays on Sept 23, 2007 19:00:16 GMT 1, now here is the dark horse, large edition, good price and a stunning image. having seen some but not all of mic's charcoals/oils on a similar forum it seems our little cherub is quite the recurring theme for the LA show. it kind of does what it says but what does bad mean to you? famous, aspirational, attention-seeking, a publicity whore or just gennerally someone who compromises their own principles in order to climb whichever ladder it takes to achieve percieved succuess or status?
thoughts please:

this is is a discussion about the art and all the other threads are pretty much do you like it or not? , or wether you were pissed that you never got one or the way laz handled the situiation.
What has been asked here is your feeling about each individual picture what it means to you, what can you read from the image. I think some people will agree this is an interesting thread and a bit more about the art and not the current sell on value and the fact that half the people that have bought the image don't give a toss what it said because all they see it as is an investment. Its to make you think before you comment
i think the images bear little imediate relevance to each other and have been rightly split up for discussion.

back to basics 4, by corblimeylimey on Sept 23, 2007 19:41:07 GMT 1, This one is my personal favourite of the latest bunch.
Micaleff isn't my favourite artist by far and there's only a few of his prints that I would be interested in, personally I think Friendly Fire is his best, followed by Angel Bombers, then this one.
I really like those chrome sculptures in the exhibition too, but don't think they'll go in the lounge of my modest victorian terrace house ;D
I've just noticed this is printed on 270gsm paper but FF was printed on 250gsm.
Extra info on the paper from another site... "A French mould-made paper for printmaking and commercial print. The paper is internally sized, 100% cotton and watermarked with four deckled edges. The paper is acid free and calcium carbonate buffered. " Strangely enough paper suppliers put this paper down as being 105 X 75 cm is size not POW's stated 106 X 76.

back to basics 4, by reados on Sept 23, 2007 19:59:59 GMT 1, This is a great picture and i agree with you guys when you say its one of the strongest images of the show, it uses less obvious objects ie guns, corporate logos as used in the minatour images which i feel are a little contrived, the title is just as important as the the marks on the paper as really puts forward a strong message. IMO this picture is about vanity, confidence and attitude.
other than that it will look pretty good in a frame

look knobhead, the point of the individual threads was to discuss each print on it's own merits, not to discuss micallef, laz, LA or any other sidetracked issue.
you seem to me to have little, if any, constructive input to this forum and to be honest i wonder why you're even here? i can imagine the consistent flow of useful information is most welcome to an habitual bagger like yourself, if this thread is not for you move on, don't bitch like a sad little brat who managed not to bag a print to flip. sour grapes or what son?
jog on sweetheart.

back to basics 4, by danvnuk on Sept 23, 2007 20:51:17 GMT 1, Personally I love it.
It has a quality about it that makes you want to stare and ponder it...especially the face.
I showed this image to a friend of mine, she's not really into art in anyway but really liked this - she also said the face has a quailty about it that makes you wonder what the angel would be thinking as it stared at itself in the mirror.
I also prefer this to the four Laz prints - they are too neat for my taste - God, I wan't to be bad has that 'tortued' look to it.

I think Lupa suggested on a previous thread that the 'horns' are of the type on an alice band, much loved by Hen Parties and the angel is viewing himself in the mirror wearing a pair of these wondering what it was like to be bad.
That's an interpretation I like, and certainly fits with the title.

back to basics 4, by lesbianwednesdays on Sept 23, 2007 21:14:10 GMT 1, now i may be reading too much in to the whole paris, lohan, richie, spears vibe and the LA connection but does this image not encompass all that is fake, desperate and superficial about that part of the world in particular - 'californication' - and also celebrity culture per se?
i mean, 'god i want to be bad' is almost prayer like, and then you have bad meaning good, also the whole devotion to being an 'icon' is flawed from the beginning, the limelight raises so many insecurities it kind of negates the notion that you should be looked up to?
i can't articulate as well as the image deserves but in my head and my heart i truly believe i know what mic' means by this, to a lesser or more extent and i just hope the print has the depth and texture worthy of sitting on our walls. i have little doubt

That's exactly what I was trying to tell my mates in the pub last night. Just joking, I don't have any mates. I was telling my dog
This is the first Mic to actually make me laugh. Reminds me of the eelus prints - Humourus little situations. This combined with the typical Micallef style of blurry, f**ked up, dramatic, iconic, deepness, makes for a great image. I particulary love the hand holding the mirror. It's very childlike and risky - It makes the image seem efortless and natural.

back to basics 4, by corblimeylimey on Sept 23, 2007 21:36:00 GMT 1, Or alternatively.... You have God - which is an anagram of Dog. BAD which was a Michael Jackon Album, and some of his fan's would say it was among his best.....so Good....but Michael Jackson is actually bad for any number of reasons....but the dog probably wouldn't be aware of this as he probably can't read newspapers, but dogs have great hearing so he might have head about Michael Jacksons trial on the TV news.....anyway... .....adding this all up..... A Dog want's to listen to Michael Jackson's Bad Album (which the dog thinks is good)....but the iPod headphones won't stay in his ears, because they weren't designed for dogs.
That MUST be it, I can't think of any other explanation, obvious really just by looking at the painting.

That's how I read it, especially given the less angel, more cherub nature of the figure. Perhaps not quite cherub, but certainly childlike. As if 'good' was all it had ever known. Like kids dressing as pirates - they don't really want to walk people off a plank, but wonder what it would be like...

personally i'd prefer it half that size. its hard to get a suitable spot to hang such a big print.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this in the flesh. Will be very interested to see how big the image is compared to the paper, I'm really hoping it will fill out most of the paper.
It's hard to get an idea on the screen but I reckon the size of this one is really going to make it stand out.

It's also very interesting, if Micallef's name is used, instead of "paris, lohan, richie, spears".
For the past 4 or 5 days, it has been mentioned in several posts, that people are certain that Micallef can't be aware of whats happening with regards to the "laz experience". and it seems to be laz mentioned as the "bad guy", or the one making millions. but let's not be naive about this....i'm sure no one is holding a gun to Micallefs head...in other words, he still has his "own self" or soul...and maybe this is a struggle with himself. Battling with being famous?

back to basics 4, by uksnowman on Sept 24, 2007 12:15:50 GMT 1, I also prefer GIWTBB to the other 4 recent prints by Laz. I'm just not that keen on the whole bulls holding guns concept, even though I think I can understand the message that some have interpreted.
When I first saw the GIWTBB image I missed the horns and I thought the angel was holding the mirror, observing the wings with a look of anguish, constantly reminded of what he/she is meant to be. Almost as if to say I don't like my stereotype.
Having heard Lupa's suggestion about horns, this makes perfect sense and fits perfectly with the title, although the meaning possibly runs deeper than this.
Can't wait to see the print in the flesh, and to hear other (more experienced) Micallef fans comments. I missed out as many others did getting Peacekeeper after queueing for hours but looking back I'm glad I missed this and got GIWTBB.
It seems guns and macdonalds signs are vogue at the moment, but they will eventually go out of fashion, whereas this print is simple, elegant and more likely to retain his fresh style in the long term.
