The drawing is done with greasy crayons, pens, or pencils. A solution containing gum arabic and dilute nitric acid is washed on the stone (or plate). This solution fixes the design in place. The entire plate surface is washed with water and then inked. Print paper is applied and sent sent through a press, transferring a the image of the stone (or plate) to the paper.

Lithography
the process of printing from a flat surface treated so as to repel the ink except where it is required for printing. The earliest forms of lithography used greasy ink to form an image on a piece of limestone that was then etched with acid and treated with gum arabic.
In a modern press, rollers transfer ink to a thin aluminum plate wrapped around a cylinder.
In offset lithography the image is transferred to an intermediate rubber-covered cylinder before being printed.

Most full colour printing for postcards, posters, etc is done using Offset Litho, only very very high runs would be printed using another technique (perhaps gravure)

Whats a lithograph, by corblimeylimey on Sept 23, 2007 20:42:58 GMT 1, The printing plates for a lithograph (like Micallefs new one) can be produced by photographing the original with a very high definition digital scanning back on a medium or large format camera, this will be converted to CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black) each seperation will become a printing plate that will be printed in that colour, the image is output either direct to plate or to film which will then make the plate through being in contact with it and UV light shining on it (the plates are light sensitive). Each plate will be made up of dots so you get the illusion that a light to dark cyan can be printed by having small dots going to 'chessboard' to solid, each matrix of dots will be imaged to the plate at a different angle it's most common for the magenta dots to be at 45 degrees and yellow at 90 degrees. When you look at something printed in four colour litho under a magnifing glass the dots make a kind of flower or rosette pattern and for example where there is yellow ink with cyan ink on top of it that will make green. Most colours can be obtained from just having various amounts of the four secondary colours.
