Starting a Print House, by Existencil on Sept 26, 2007 11:12:31 GMT 1, Hey,
Given all the disatisfaction with the current state of LAZ & POW, do you think there would be a market for a more consumer focused print distributer?
It's just a thought, but I was wondering whether artists would switch over if they knew their fans were being treated with respect.
I'm guessing the likes of LAZ & POW succeed due to the reputation they have already built up, but it seems there is room for improvement.
What is involved in setting up a print house?

Starting a Print House, by notitle on Sept 26, 2007 11:31:12 GMT 1, there are many great printhouses out there with exceptional customer services, artists and print quality.
i'd say there's not a lot involved in setting up an 'online gallery', much more involved in setting up a printhouse.
however if you'd like to set up an excellent online gallery or printhouse there is much more involved. if you do not have a background in printing, or a partner who does it's best to focus on the gallery side of things and outsource printing to a trustworthy company who you can build a good relationship with.
online galleries are ten a penny, so theres a need to be exceptional in all areas of business in order to do well.

Starting a Print House, by trebor on Sept 26, 2007 11:55:26 GMT 1, Try convincing an artists to let you use their images to print if they don't know you, its not easy. Start up cash for an inhouse print house based in London would set you back a min of what 25k?

Starting a Print House, by doughy on Sept 26, 2007 12:11:53 GMT 1, Digital Gilcee print or screen, or litho?
A decent digital print set-up would be around £50k+ with a good MAC, Digi printer, stock, software, studio etc. +
Screenprint, depends if you want a handbench, semi-auto, auto? And the pre-press & post-press to go with it. £100k +. or cheaper second hand.
Forget Litho!!! Far too expensive to set-up.
Print experience or experienced printers and MAC operators?
Artists, the tricky one?
Website & media attention!!!!!!!!
Gallery!!!!
Not getting younger, I like the art scene and would love to get a foot in the door too, but I'm from a print background, so know what a pain it can be. A big challenge to anyone these days.
Got a Banksy original for sale? ;D

Starting a Print House, by dave313perry on Sept 26, 2007 12:29:26 GMT 1, Basically not worth your effort - The Digital printer i run Daily is if purchased from new the cost of a small house
And as for screenprint - well our printer is on holiday in his villa in Turkey
We've been pondering putting our services into the pipeline for artists to use and setup an online gallery but its finding the time and the effort to publicise
Peace Dave

Starting a Print House, by doughy on Sept 26, 2007 12:40:00 GMT 1, True Dave, there is money to be made in print, and lots to lose too.
A reel-to-reel digi, which i saw at Maximus Operandi, was about £60k brand new, just the press!
Our Inca Spider was £500k brand new, but got it at £250k second hand.
Screen would be the best to start off you were to think of setting up your own.
A second hand film processor, good MAC, stencil prep and wash out rooms, 1 machine, guillotine and premises. AND a damn good screenprint chap makes the biggest difference!

Starting a Print House, by dave313perry on Sept 26, 2007 12:53:47 GMT 1, I wouldnt be able to tell you what we got here as im stuck behind an imac but i do run a xerox 6060 which aint cheap!!!
screenprint wise... If your looking for a small hand-pull setup to try and setup something in your shed - it is do'able!! although very difficult and will take you a while to grasp the Do's and Dont's.
See member 'Crazyjake' who has had a bash at doing some himself, much to his credit!
But something to consider if youve got the bottle and cheek is approach old print companies to see if they have an old redundant press they have clogging up dust and could get you going for a start. - as screenprint is a art very much on the way out in recent years!
But there is a hell of a lot to consider if setting up a print house similar to POW from scratch!

Starting a Print House, by Existencil on Sept 26, 2007 12:55:13 GMT 1, Mmmm. Perhaps a little more expensive than I thought!
What about the idea of an online gallery, where people could contribute pictures of their art. Others could then navigate the site like a real gallery & hit links at each picture to relevant galleries & information associated with the artist.
People could contribute to the gallery on an ongoing basis by simply uploading pics.

Starting a Print House, by doughy on Sept 26, 2007 13:33:30 GMT 1, My thoughts are if you intend to set up an on-line gallery, you need an eye on what is commercial yet has quality and a lot thought gone into it, I would never myself sell aspro-coloured pics. from films or people myself, bag of Sh***.
This forum, and others, give you access to a large market, but I personally would want something more tangible such as a real Gallery. Art is there to be seen, and it would be more rewarding & exciting I feel. So many people hate there jobs, and the art industry (which is what it is) can be sooooo dynamic, if you know what people want.
Perhaps on-line then a real gallery would be the plan for me too? Perhaps you can't have one without the other?
If you do decide to take the plunge, good luck Stuey.

Starting a Print House, by Existencil on Sept 26, 2007 13:39:24 GMT 1, I like the idea of a YouTube for art. I know it's vague, but something like a pure peoples gallery that bypasses all the cloak & dagger stuff is what I'm getting at.
