Don't believe the hype!, by thesewalls on Sept 20, 2007 8:41:38 GMT 1, Look at the big picture here. Take a step back for a second. These were print releases that, before they were actually available, no one really loved. Sure, Peace Keeper got some points, but come on, they're not amazing and you know it. AMs work IS special, he is an amazing artists, and he will continue to make beautiful pictures for our walls, for years and years to come. The line for the prints at LAZ, including the scene before, during, and especially after, is exactly what Steve wants. We're creating even more demand with all this talk, making it more likely for the random board member to buy one on ebay for double the MSRP, instead of waiting a month for the flippers cards to expire, or boycotting them all together. And yes, I use Manufactured Suggested Retail Price for a reason. To me, none of the new prints were worth that much. Are worth that much. We made them worth that much! All I'm saying is to take a deep breathe and take a fucking step out of our/your little bubble, the air is nice my friends.

Don't believe the hype!, by sham69 on Sept 20, 2007 10:09:12 GMT 1, What would be constructive and useful is to look at the psychology Laz (and others) are using in creating the demand. Being naturally cynical I'd be interested in pulling together all of the facts, simply so us the consumer understand some of the irrational thoughts/actions that take place when we buy. You can bet your bottom dollar Laz is using every trick in the book to stimulate the demand for his stable or artists.
Few questions the forum might be able to answer: Is there any relationship with Robbie Williams/Damian Hirst and Laz? (Both of which are reputed to have bought entire shows) Did Laz buy the Micallef works that came for auction this year? Did Laz buy any of the Micallef works that were sold in LA?
It seems to me that counter culture galleries are as guilty of stealth marketing as the old establishment to get artists into the upper echelons of the art world.
I can't help but think POW's 'this one's for the kids' 1,000 x £300 - £300,000. Is a bit of a p*** take. If Laz is on a 50% cut, he's probably netted about £130,000 for half an hours work. How long will the average forum member have to work to net their £300?
Come on Laz how about releasing 5,000 prints at £50 each? Or would that devalue your asset and kill the golden goose?
Sales is about supply and demand. More demand equals more sales.
As someone so rightly posted recently it's all about the money. I'm not disputing the art, it's a given that the gallery rosta is first class. What I am questioning is the methods being used to inflate the artists in the eyes of the mass market. Pushing prices into another bracket altogether out of the range of the man on the street.
Posters note: Yes I do rate Micallef and yes I have bought the release. No axe to grind just a few questions to be answered.

Don't believe the hype!, by sham69 on Sept 20, 2007 10:22:59 GMT 1, I was initially disappointed with the Laz release prints prior to seeing the posts for show and the work there. I've done an about turn since, and put in context, while the prints are not his strongest work they sit well with the show. It will be interesting to see what the critics say about it. I for one am mightily impressed with the work. He's certainly come up with the goods.

I liked every last one I saw. My favourite was the celebrity being photographed who was actually some sort of Demon

Don't believe the hype!, by thesewalls on Sept 20, 2007 11:03:47 GMT 1, half of me agrees with you and the other half thinks that something smells fishy. youve had three posts on your name and they've all been about Micallef... laz certianly seems to have ur attention. take a deep breath, stand back and watch what happens when the market gets flooded and this hype is over.
nothing fishy my friend, i'm just new to the boards and this has been the biggest splash since i've joined. in all honesty, the words i write are for myself just as much as they're for the forum (after all, it's about the sharing of ideas, knowledge, opinions, and the value of expression). this culture amazes me, from what the lot here has to say (which is all VERY impressive for the most part), to the art i see every day as i walk the streets. i grew up as a graf/street art/obey head, but spent a lot of time in the music scene as i aged, and have now found my way back to my roots, which seems to be tip toeing the line between mass consumerism and soulful beauty. it is a constant struggle for me to see that beauty in it's purist form, which translates into a jumble of thoughts sometimes. I recently 'bought' three Faile prints, to only be refunded for all of them...yet I walk by wheatpasts by Bast, Swoon, Faile, Obey, and the like daily, but cannot manage to get them on my walls for an affordable price. I do have other posts on these boards, as i try to find solace in this realm, and look forward to future developments. Please, if you're reading this, extrapolate on your predictions after my lungs are filled with fresh air, and hopefully refresh, enlighten, or bash my somewhat cynical views. and i am of course interested in what triggered the 'fishy' line...caught up in the phenomenon i am, and will take the advice mentioned above and look at the 'methods' involved. more soon. thanks for the words all, reeeespect.

Culture? Art?
Remember, it's what we're all here for.

So i express my opinion and u neg?? uve shown great wisdom there Theres 101 threads on here talking about how LAz should have done this or he should have done that or AM should release 20,000 prints at £20
Im just stating the obvious.....
All im saying is if people acnt afford it or dont like how things are, there are plenty more artists out there to be supporting
Ive missed out on all the AM' s in the last year and all the Banksys but at least im not spouting off asif these ppl owe me something, theres more important things out there

Sorry to tell you I don't go in for the negging thing. Living in a democracy I'm quite happy with free speech. I like your direct approach, it's just that I don't see anything constructive. Oh, and I've been negged as well. So you should feel better now.
Enough! I'm starting to feel like a child squabbling.

TBH for every unconstructive post like this I do send 15/ 20 constructive ones. I just get frustrated with reading the same things time and time again, if ppl took the time to read whats on here rather than starting a thread evertime they want to say something the place would be a lot better.
Can you imagine what the response would be if you rang up mr farrari and said.......... me and my friends cant afford your car, so can u please make an edition made of paper and that only has 3 wheels??? They would laugh u all the way to the skoda factory
peaceout
ps im picking up my dummy as we speak

Don't believe the hype!, by scavos on Sept 20, 2007 12:54:41 GMT 1, The thing that has really shocked me over the last 48 hours is the number of Micallef fans that have posted away on threads about how they did not get a print from Laz, but the Micallef show in LA does not seem to interest them An Artists work that they love! and yet the thread with photos of his new work at his big show in LA kept dropping down the board through lack of interest I spent most of yesterday bumping it
Hey Silky Great point. I was away most of yesterday and have been catching up on the threads this morning. People are missing out on seeing some amazing stuff on the LA threads. I've personally not seen anything that makes me change my mind about three of the four Laz prints but I'd recommend anyone who hasn't seen the LA threads to pay them a visit. It makes a great refreshing chance from some of the negativity and talk of 'money this and money that' - banging around at the moment. Some fantastic art Check them out folks.
