A thread for members who actually love art, by rob123rob on Sept 21, 2007 5:26:05 GMT 1, Sweet little post Winter, a nice breath of fresh air! Going slightly off topic but has anyone had any dealings with Arofish? I'm really liking his Angel stuff (completely unrelated to AM) but the ?1700 one on EBay is way out of my price right now and the prints don't include the aspect of the canvas I like the most (an angel on a swing over a graveyard, weird I know but poinant). Any info is appreciated ;D
You might wanna try going to 7press.co.uk and email through there. That is where the first batch of Arofish's Angel prints were released...I think there have been 4 colourways of the print so far, so you might be able to land one yet...

A thread for members who actually love art, by pezlow on Sept 21, 2007 6:57:33 GMT 1, Nice thread. I really like Julian Opie's stuff. If you want something a bit more affordable but similar try Edd Pearman who is represented by the Mark Jason gallery. That gallery is really worth checking out because Mark selects his favourite students from the graduate shows and offers to represent them. So you really do feel that you are supporting emerging contemporary artists.
www.markjasongallery.com/
I agree with artpartment the best place to go and see all sorts of different work is to go to the student shows. If you live in London there is an embarassment of riches on that front. I would recommend going to the RCA, Slade, Central St Martins, Chelsea College of Art, Camberwell College of Art and Goldsmiths. All of them are great and have a slightly different philosophy. The RCA is the most "commercial" of the student shows in that everything is for sale and it is all marked with a price but it is still a breath of fresh air compared to the lazinc queue.
Other artists I am digging at the moment are Peter Jones, who is represented by Fred London. Here is one of his stunning portraits, which look amazing in the flesh. The detail is just incredible.
I also love Susie Hamilton
and ray richardson
I've mentioned most of these artists before on different threads but very few people have shown the slightest bit of interest which probably means that my tastes are a bit different to everyone else. Or maybe it is because none of them sell out in 5 seconds flat!

A thread for members who actually love art, by andrewd on Sept 21, 2007 8:32:36 GMT 1, It's very important to have a broad appreciation of art whether you can afford it or not, it certainly lets you see where people are coming from, influences etc and for example some people may say I don't like classical music but I do like Stockhausen they are probably not in a position to fully comprehend it without a broader interest. I saw a recent exhibition of Opies in Cork Street, they are great in the flesh but certainly out of my price range. About a year ago someone @ Laz ( no names ) suggested that really Banksy's position was now like Opie's and a long list of artist who people could not really expect to buy cheaply or easily. I think that's right and as we know the LA prints are only cheaper then market value because that's what Banksy wants. I hope that many of us are still talking art in 10 years time.

A thread for members who actually love art, by ABC on Sept 21, 2007 10:56:24 GMT 1, Great thread, all of the "M" threads are getting tedious now, as for loving art, Ive loved it since I was a nipper, never liked anything else at school apart from Art, more than likely why I'm not a brain surgeon now. This is something I'm knocking up at the moment. Its part of the London Eye and the Lloyds building for an office space in the city.

A thread for members who actually love art, by andrewd on Sept 21, 2007 19:22:58 GMT 1, ABC, I saw your paintings on WC, think they are great. Pezlow, the first painting that you posted by Peter jones has a quirky resemblance to Tom Ormond who exhibited at the Oxford Street ghetto but hasn't been too conspicous since. I wanted one of his paintings but no joy ( none available although he e-mailed me to say that one of his paintings was being shown in the States but no news since ) either damien Hirst is keeping him busy or there'll be something new soon.

A thread for members who actually love art, by andrewd on Sept 21, 2007 19:26:03 GMT 1, just thought, ( and i don't want to hijack the thread!! ) 13/14 weeks to Christmas, instead of listening for the first cuckoo I am keeping my eyes peeled for the first where' santa's ghetto thread. Living in London after all the AM queues etc I rather perversly hope it's somewhere inaccessible this year!
oops edited as I see that there is one in the Banksy exhibitions section!

My latest purchases are Quiet Hare and Listening Hare, which you can see on this page:
www.janetomlinson.com/gal_living.php
Not picked them up yet, but I've seen them both in the flesh and they're bloody beautiful ;D

A thread for members who actually love art, by notitle on Sept 21, 2007 19:48:00 GMT 1, this turned up today, and it is blooming spectacular! £70 including postage for a one-off painting. I love it. It's called another life, and it gets me thinking whenever I look at it. Only the best framing will do now!

More of the peter jones stuff at Fred London. www.fred-london.com/
It takes him up to three weeks to do one painting, and they are not big. Every single hair on the monkey is painstakingly painted. But they are not photorealist because he gives his monkeys quite scary faces often.
