The last 24 hours, by pezlow on Sept 20, 2007 9:57:31 GMT 1, Yesterday morning I went to see stuey, cracka, Lesbianwednesday, mcnuts, wiseblood etc and had a nice friendly (but sadly brief) chat with them all in the queue before I headed in to work.
It was great to see their excitement and enthusiasm for the art and the prints they were patiently queueing up to buy.
Since then everything has turned to s**t.
We have people coming on here slagging off the queue for being robots.
We have people on the forum urging POW to release their Micallef prints whilst many of their fellow forum members, huge micallef fans, are out queueing in the rain.
We have fights breaking out in the queue
We have 10 of the laz prints on ebay before the ink is dry on the lazinc receipt.
We have one of the arch flippers on this board encouraging us to use physical violence against another flipper.
We have naming and shaming of flippers on this board, many of them prominent contributors to this and other forums - You know who you are- and encouragement to deliberately threaten them, swear at them and auction wreck.
----
It disgusts me what has happened in the last 24 hours. This is a scene that has now degenerated into the basest and most unrewarding of human instincts - greed. This has got nothing to do with art anymore and it makes me sick sick sick.

The last 24 hours, by airsine on Sept 20, 2007 10:12:43 GMT 1, I've seen friendlier boards for Nasdaq companies that have blown $millions of shareholder money!
Is this Micallef release the 'Rolling Stones at Altamont' of street art?
...nobody seems to be wearing flowers in their hair today

The last 24 hours, by goffy on Sept 20, 2007 10:19:54 GMT 1, You are right Pez. It's all about money for some people. Unfortunately, because there is a quick buck to be made by flipping Art there will always be these Spiv types to take advantage of this. There really is nothing we can do about it. We can only hope that galleries and artists do their best to ensure many of the genuine fans/supporters are able to get the prints they want. Personally I have never bought a flipped piece of art. If I cannot get it from it's original source then I don't bother, this is basically because I cannot afford the ebay/gallery prices of the prints I want but missed. But while there are people who can afford it the flipping will carry on. We can only hope that the likes of Laz learn from their mistakes and do something to remedy it next time, but I doubt it. Yesterday's episode was sad but let's face, not unexpected.

The last 24 hours, by goffy on Sept 20, 2007 10:42:09 GMT 1, While I agree there has been some ugliness on the forum, and a lot of over reacting, It is better people vent their spleen on here than fighting in the street. And it doesn't really bode well for the next Banksy release, if there is one!

The last 24 hours, by Tyler Durden on Sept 20, 2007 10:48:33 GMT 1, I've become a spectator of late.
I've gone from feeling a schoolkid again and setting my computer desktop to rat and catapult, marvelling about the fact that Banksy's back again, to wondering what all this has come to.
Art is a form to be enjoyed, reflected on, to be emotive and enjoyed. That seems to now be lost in the realms of being a commodity to be traded on with no consideration to what the image is, what it represents, what the thoughts were behind it.
What a waste.

The last 24 hours, by funster on Sept 20, 2007 10:55:11 GMT 1, I've respected Pezlow for ages on this forum and no more so than right now, his post was spot on. When I got home from work at about 10ish last night and had been reading all about things on the forum the first thing I said to my wife is "its a sad day for art", when I woke up this morning I felt the same way, its like people are breaking up a little club I only found out about a year or so ago The involvement of money in anything often leads to its destruction and considering how many of the seven sins (greed, lust, wrath, envy, sloth (me with the f5 button)) are now encroaching on this forum maybe we're next?

It has been ugly and not for the first time. So why are the posts containing threats and calls to (illegally) sabotage auctions still here, they quite clearly break the terms of service that we all agree to when joining the forum, unlike the numerous posts which have been removed the last few weeks.

The last 24 hours, by pezlow on Sept 20, 2007 11:08:06 GMT 1, It is bizarre that you can post a perfectly innocent comment about the respect system and it gets deleted but that posts inciting violence seem ok. There is something hugely ironic in jboy, the most vocal flipper of the lot, wants us to inflict violence on another flipper. Is he trying to eliminate competition?

The last 24 hours, by Strange Al on Sept 20, 2007 11:14:28 GMT 1, Pez - I completely agree that the forum has made for very sorry reading over the last 24 hours. It's been dark!
Though I'm not surprised feelings are running high - If I'd queued up in the rain outside Laz and come away with nothing I'm sure I'd be pretty angry and venting too. Plus I'd definitely want to discuss what went wrong and how the situation can be improved. Though sadly anger is only very rarely a good foundation for a reasoned discussion.
As others have encouraged, let's all try and redress the balance and get back to discussing the art. I hope that can be achieved by people starting threads unrelated to yesterday's print release at Laz and the surrounding issues. Though if that doesn't work and it means spending some time away from the board until this has blown over, that's what I'll do.
Finally, what's the old saying? "A picture paints a thousand words":
