Graffiti Research Project, by shower on Sept 3, 2007 18:01:12 GMT 1, My name is Tom Pearson and I am studying for a BA geography degree at Sheffield University. I have chosen to study graffiti as the topic for my dissertation and was hoping you would be able to help my research.
My research is based around three main aims: to gain opinion as to whether graffiti is an act of vandalism or a form of art and expression; to examine whether graffiti is a reaction to the alienating nature of urban life; and to gain a better understanding of policies that have been instigated to reduce or prevent graffiti.
I need to contact and collect information from graffiti artists. If you could help I would be extremely grateful, either by filling out a questionnaire and/or by providing me with contact details of anyone else who would also be willing to help.
If you can help can you drop me an email at parking_space@msn.com or post your email add in this thread so I can send you a questionnaire to fill in.

Graffiti Research Project, by carlito on Sept 3, 2007 18:23:57 GMT 1, Tom did u get this idea from the Radio 5 discussion late last night?... i guess the crux of your dissertation will come down to what constitutes Art (Banksy etc) and what constitutes vandalism (poor tagging)..interesting subject..get onto the local authorities to get the official view to.

did my degree at sheffield too. Can remember the John Peel stencil going up at the top of division street a day or two after he died (to bring it back to art).

Graffiti Research Project, by carlito on Sept 3, 2007 18:27:59 GMT 1, maybe worth checking with the BBC about getting a recording of the show between 10pm and 1am last night they had a good half hour discussion on this area - - totally right wing bollox but good to argue against... it revolved around a lad who's been imprisoned for 12 months for tagging...
(also check out Banksy's Wall and Piece for some of his choice words on what is really vandalism etc)

Did you try and contact Nu as previously suggested? He's got loads of street artists at Nuart at the moment. Seems like the perfect opportunity to me.
