Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by pezlow on Aug 23, 2007 9:15:52 GMT 1, Romany you have some really fascinating stuff. Are there any other pieces of yours that we've not seen yet. Would love to see some photos. The Ian Pollock stuff you have is great.
As for me I have been in to art ever since school, when I used to sneak off to galleries to go and look at work. Of course it was pretty different back then. The YBA's were still at Goldsmiths and the art world was pretty stuffy. So I would go to the usual Monet/rembrandt/picasso type shows.
My eyes were opened to contemporary art on a trip to new york when I was 20. There I disccovered artists like Mark Rothko, Sol Le Witt, Lawrence Weiner, Dan Flavin and the work of the minimalists like Judd and Andre. These really, really blew my mind and totally changed my view of art. The conceptual work of Lawrence Weiner in particular amazed me. How can words written on a wall be art? But it provoked a reaction in me and made me think.
Buying art came much much later. The first two pieces I bought were in around 2000. They are both abstracts - one by the british artist Richard Smith and one by Catalan artist Eva Bosch. I still have them framed up now. Here are some very crappy camera phone pictures.
Richard Smith
Eva Bosch
My interest in street art came much later still and as with most people came through banksy. It is through this forum and Wall candy that I have discovered some of the other artists I now love.

Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by slowmo on Aug 23, 2007 9:27:20 GMT 1, Nice thread. In terms of starting my collection, it was actually a tate modern poster job. Lichtenstein's Wham, diptych. What a piece of art that is!
Anyway, that led on to Hewlett's the kid. I liked it because it reminded me a lot of Lichtensteins work. Bought the hewlett from a shop in Greenwich, he had cut it out on a coffee table, asked where I can find out more about this Banksy, (fair play my wife had been telling me about him already) and he said look on pictures on walls. Weston super mare, hmmm, who is this dface, eine, aint that the guy from massive attack etc etc.............

Yes, some of you old schooler's may be thinking wow..what a collection. But hey, guess who throw them away ?

Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by frank11 on Aug 23, 2007 11:02:32 GMT 1, First piece i bought was also a Tate Modern poster of Matisse's Snail.
Was taken to see it when i was a kid and was blown away!! Scale, composition was amazing and after being told by my old art teacher " Your crap at art E-!!" It was the first time i actually wanted to pick up a paint brush and paints.
As an aside at the Tate at the time they also had signed BombHuggers for £50!! Far to expensive!! I thought, i can buy five Matissse's for that price!!!
Doh!

Just think how happy you'll be making her. Seems like a win win

don't think it's matt lucas though - more like alfred hitchcock
