Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by baldwin on Aug 22, 2007 16:37:52 GMT 1, My collection started by looking on ebay for a cheap poster. Ended up finding Lucy McLauchlan, seeing a banksy link on ebay related searches, seeing that he sold prints, finding POW and ended up spending over £500 of my student overdraft on prints. Best thing I've ever done!

how non-arty f*rty is that

I really like some of it, especially the charcoal drawings.
Here's a bit from his website that might explain the 'darkness'
'My work focuses on the life of children in conflict-ridden societies. Growing up in Belfast during the 1980s I experienced daily acts of violence. Most of the works that I create are reflections of my past, but the emotions portrayed, while being very personal, are not only specific to me. I want to show in my work how children are particularly affected by growing up in the midst of violence and destruction. People who look at my work are encouraged to attribute their own memories and emotions to individual pieces. My aim is to create a reaction and dialogue in and between observers.'

Hey Carlito, was that the story that used to be on the back page, with the crazy quiff-style hairpieces? I loved that story but I never knew that was Hewlett.
I really got into his work via Deadline magazine

Here's a link to a local photographer I've bought Rocks at Strangles Beach, and Ponta du Sao Lourenco prints which are in the beach section. His Dartmoor landscapes are pretty good too.

For a while I thought I might go for a kayak, ended up on POW buying CWS. A couple of Lucy Mcs followed pretty soon after I think.

Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by johnas on Aug 22, 2007 22:23:20 GMT 1, i guess my interest in street art really started through Vaughn Bode and his comics Deadbone & Cheech Wizard.... I used to borrow them off a mate of mine who was into all his early hip hop and graffiti and i started to notice VB's characters being replicated on the streets.
From there my interest in graf really started. when i went to uni and i had my 'own place', i started to pick up little pieces of graf inspired works from market stalls and places like that, which led to where I am today i guess

oh, a little purile too.

Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by andrewd on Aug 22, 2007 22:38:28 GMT 1, Not strictly art but I collected punk tour posters back in the 70's including Anarchy in the Uk tour poster, lots of Clash stuff etc. First bit of art was Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Dante's Dream a 19th century signed print from an edition of 150. Got it in Oxfam for a fiver because it looked a bit like the cover of Joy Division's Closer. Still up in the living room and I am told it's worth getting on for the price of a signed Banksy.

B**tard, if I hadn't just plussed you I would have neg'd you for that ;D
Maybe the jam were more professional, but I prefered the raw energy of the Clash and the unpolished honesty that they gave us. Good point from Andrewd though. I used to have a lot of Gee Vaucher's Crass work on my wall. Particularly the Zoundz poster, which was covered on another thread.

i f*cking love the clash and all they stood for, so much more productive than any punk band. i just think the jam meant more, were more diverse and their work stands the test of time better.
one; i know that is actually more offensive than my last post and two; it is a slightly flawed opinion as i wasn't around at the time to really be able to guage their true relavance

Art that started your collection -Some Art for Pez, by Harveyn on Aug 22, 2007 23:11:32 GMT 1, I know this is a bit off the subject matter (but as I started the thread maybe I am entitled).
In my youth I went to see the Clash play at the Ulster Hall, best gig ever. Opened behind a curtain with just silhouettes visible to London Calling. Mick had left at this stage and Joe was fronting the band.
My mate, who did a bit of singing in a band managed to get up on stage (he like me was a life long fan). He was about to get thrown back off by the bouncers when Joe came over and put his arm around him and walked him to the back of the stage. My mate look a bit like Mick Jones. They both then walked to the front of the stage and sang a duet of Bank Robber (lucky he could sing a bit). He has been living off the story ever since (20 odd years later).
