A plea - please read, by JD on Aug 22, 2007 12:39:53 GMT 1, Good thread started Pez. Ive only been on the site a few months and Ive thought the same many times. Im not only suprised by all the talk about money/investment etc and not the beauty and fun of art but also the lack of talk about Banksy ! Maybe there is more talk about Banksy on the financial websites

It's all quiet on the Banksy front at the moment, obviously when something happens (like the Glastonbury stuff or Warhol Vs Banksy) it is discussed at length.
Come on POW, give us some Banksy to talk about ;D

The snorting copper, because of the long line of paint. It's the sort of thing that you'd see on the pavement and follow out of idol curiosity then after wandering all over you'd be rewarded with the copper which would have me rolling on the floor.
Although you could follow it the wrong way and just think hunh

A plea - please read, by JD on Aug 22, 2007 13:08:39 GMT 1, Snorting copper yes brilliant. Right Im going to have a serious think. Laugh now along the side of the tube train was effective too off the top of my head, and the kid painting out the graffiti helpline. I also laugh out loud everytime I look at my grannies although not everyones cuppa. And the oil painting with the finger up is fun

Not my favorite, but I like. Typical Banksy IMO.
The image oozes smart French sophistication. It's like a snapshot of a smart Hollywood French film. Then it is directly contrasted with a symbol of raw British culture - the football hooligan. It's what Banksy does best - sums up the crappiness of British culture. He has pointed out how far away real British life is from the polished/ romantic art and film that we all know so well. The way they are looking at the hooligan is funny aswell. It's like -"who the fuck is this fat bloke that has just come into our perfect little world?!"
The great thing is that Banksy is actually turning seedy, scummy British culture into something magical, ironic and funny through his art.
I'm sure plenty of people will laugh at this analysis, but it beats talking about money.

A plea - please read, by Yessir on Aug 22, 2007 13:15:16 GMT 1, I started the "Price Crash Who Cares", thread yesterday (as a tongue-in-cheek protest) aimed at the "art investors".
Pez you have more than hit the "bullseye", in what you have written and what I kind of unsuccessfully tried to put across yesterday in my thread.
I took a lot of flak yesterday (including plenty of neg-) , for basically giving an honest view, that this forum was being overrun by "money talk".
I would also like to thank the people who supported me yesterday, you know who you are.

Interesting that none of the naysayers on your thread have dived into this one but perhaps that will come when America wakes up
You should never be afraid to voice your opinion and when I am next able you will get a +1 from me.

A plea - please read, by Yessir on Aug 22, 2007 13:34:32 GMT 1, Thanks Pez +1
I just noticed my karma score and was thinking that I better take a back seat in this forum, because for me to go down to zero this morning, means I must have upset a hell-of-a-lot of people yesterday.
But from your excellent thread I see a lot of people support where we are coming from, so I guess you have to take these things on the chin and carry on.

A plea - please read, by kingkambo on Aug 22, 2007 13:38:20 GMT 1, I have been a banksy fan from 2002 when his work started appering along the southbank... little Rats doing random things around London Bridge. Snorting copper by Waterloo is ace, but his face has now totally faded.
I think Banksy's success, may have come at the expense of his real fans. It is comendable that Banksy asks for POW to keep prices low but the chances of getting one from them are getting slimmer and slimmer due to demand ( and the fact they wont f%$king give out any info!).
I have two favorite Banksy pieces, the Monkey Queen done at Clink Street and The Chequebook Vandalism piece again at Clink Street. if you want a look you should be able to find them both on fliker or maybe google images.
One positve about POW taking the P*ss is that i have started looking at other artists as a result... think someone else mentioned the same on another thread.
By art to love it, not sell it...

Agreed, it's brilliant. I don't think this one really should be released as a print. It should be stencilled on the street. Banksy should whack a huge version of it on the side of the 'News of the world' headquarters or something. that would give me far more pleasure than arguing how much the print is worth!

I love that as well, reminds me of Drop the Dead Donkey when the top reporter used too take an old teddy on assignment to use in shots of devastation, you can really imagine it happening for real.

A plea - please read, by becksaboo on Aug 22, 2007 16:47:25 GMT 1, I love this piece as well (girl with a teddy) but I'd feel uncomfortable having it on my wall as I know that this sort of thing definately goes on. I think the piece is excellant at raising questions about how the media and aid agencies work and it stands out as the other Banksy stuff is quite tongue in cheek whereas this just makes me sad.
As for my favourite, I couldn't say- too many to choose from. So rare that I like everything an artist does.

Looks like someone's on the wrong thread.
Anyway... in response to pezlow's original post... I've been through a few stages in buying the stuff in my collection.
1. The Innocent buyer. I started out all innocent about 18 months ago, after buying some prints from a guy I met who had a cool website. Then I started buying more and more pricey stuff, then realized that some of my stuff was worth more on Ebay than when I bought it.
2. The Greedy buyer. I admit, I bought some stuff speculatively, hoping the price would rise. Spent hours surfing Ebay, this forum, reading all sorts of very boring crap and generally wasting my time.
3. The Remorseful Art Lover. I started to hate all this. This is not what I wanted, this is not what I'm about, and this is not what the art's about. So I offload the prints I don't Love.
4. Full circle. Now, however, having passed through the 'remorse' phase, and hating my own cynicism, I'm back at stage 1. And the art up on the walls is starting to wake up a dormant creative urge that I've been suppressing for about 10 years - in the last few months I've filled a few sketchbooks, and I've started cutting stencils. This is thanks to the pictures on my walls. They cost me a lot of money but thankfully I don't care any more, because I love them. (Especially the D*Face and Love Rat)

A plea - please read, by Ågent ßacardi on Aug 23, 2007 5:05:54 GMT 1, I completely understand where you're coming from Pez, I really do... and I must say that I'm in complete agreement. I have never bought a print or canvas with its price in mind, I buy it because it makes me smile/happy/think/etc..., and I joined this forum mainly with the discussion of art in mind.
You may call it being jaded, but I think that I've become numb to the dimension of value to art. When people discuss "what's this worth?", etc., I usually just read through, and do my job as a moderator. I hardly contribute, because I'm just not as concerned about this aspect. But I think we all have to admit that 'value' is attached to art, just that a nose is attached to everyone's faces. I think it's inevitable. When there's something desirable in limited quantities, the dimension of value will always exist. In fact, the whole print "limited edition" concept sets the whole thing up. If artists want their art to proliferate and invoke thought, discussion, discourse, and spread their messages to everyone, why would they release only, say, 50? Why, are only 50 people worthy of the artists' message? Are you saying that only rich people get to enjoy your art? These are not accusations, they are just questions I've had for a while that I thought I'd open up for discussion (NOT ATTACK!). Is the biggest reason why value is inherent in art because the art, perhaps, was created partly with value in mind? Why the whole 'limited edition' schtick?
On that token, I think eradicating the discussion of value is as futile as eradicating religious extremists in this world. But I do support the idea that folks who want to discuss value do it in their own specific threads. This is a forum created for the discussion of Banksy (mainly) and art, and discussion of value (kind of an elephant in the room) is fair game IMHO. But if they're in their own specific threads, then folks who aren't interested in the discussion of that aspect have the option to avoid it... and folks who are can easily locate it.

A plea - please read, by pezlow on Aug 23, 2007 6:28:32 GMT 1, Just to clarify one point. I fully accept that a certain amount of discussion about value is necessary. I have participated in discussions about that myself. I would certainly agree that the amount of discussion about value is disproportionate on here though.
I hope I made it clear in my post I am not naive. I understand how the markets work, hell I even have an economics degree (albeit quite a long time ago now!). To those people who say "well why don't you sell your banksys at cost then when you sell" I would say simply because I can't afford to. When I sell something it is inevitably to buy more art and, as I said in my original post, the cost of that art is becoming exhorbitant at the moment. I do understand about value but it doesn't really interest me to talk about it all the time.
My real objection is not the odd comment here and there about the value of one piece or another but the whole threads we have recently had dedicated to prices and the economy and theories of when this or that crash will happen.
