Started A Printing Course - Thoughts On 1st Piece , by Harveyn on Aug 22, 2007 17:14:44 GMT 1, Hi
I started a screen printing class a couple of weeks back. Now it is over 5 years since I have down any artwork so it was a challenge to find something from my small portfolio that I thought would be suitable to produce as a screen print (and to be honest that I still liked).
I thought it would be nice to pick one of my own oil paintings to play around with rather than just a random image I liked. Eventually when my current job is less demanding I plan to spend a more time producing original pieces and possibly prints. This is probably at least 5 years away but in the interim I intend to spend some time developing my own style and more importantly developing my ability.
The main reason I started the course was purely to have some "me time" away from work and family life. I am also interested to understand the art and the process of screen printing, an interest I guess that stems from my passion for collecting art.
Anyway I thought I would post this as a potential 1st selection for printing (its an oil painting I did back in Y2002). All thoughts positive or negative accepted.
Beautiful Delinquents

Yeah I used an old black and white photo of Kate Moss for reference. No intention to make it look like Kate she just had the expression and emotion I was looking for.

I think you might be right about the number of colours and the difficulty in turning this into a screen print. I guess it might end up looking slightly different. But as a complete novice in printing it will have to be a case of trial and error. I think I will probably end up doing quite a bit of hand application to make it look better.
You see if you would sell me one of your Barking Dogs on borrowed signs I would stop messing about trying to create something myself...... ;D ;D ;D ;D

but keep it up bro or why not develope your painting technique aswel?

You can draw so try drawing out some of those colored areas by hand so you avoid some of those cliched dissolve edges that photoshop gives you. It will give it a more graphic look. Unless that was what you were going for?

PM me for help and advice.

Just thought it would be fun to try screen printing... ;D ;D ;D ;D Lots of work I know and plenty to learn, but I plan to enjoy it.
Nice one, great to see people getting back into their art ! wouldn't worry too much about screenprints unless the image you're working on calls for it. We only buy em cos we can't asfford the orginals good luck mate, keep us posted.

Speak for yourself. Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter did wonders with the medium. People like Shephard Fairey it suits their style perfectly.

the image does not evoke evn a reaction from me but you're not putting that up for knocks, so fair do's. with regard to you and"your time"and developing your printing skills, well, there are worse starting points. so from me, good luck, but do keep pushing yourself, yeah?

Started A Printing Course - Thoughts On 1st Piece , by Harveyn on Aug 22, 2007 21:32:42 GMT 1, Hi Lesbianwednesdays - I sort of agree. The painting is fairly old and when I look at the art that I am buying currently I tend to buy for the imaginary and the emotion that I get from the piece (which by comparison mine lacks substance, style, technique, edge and probably most important for me emotion).
My work in the past has been varied and I have explored many techniques including mixing oils and liquid rubber. The journey stopped 5 years back when I started my own Business and I guess it stopped leaving me with a feeling that I had not quite answered the questions I have myself.
Anyway thanks for the feedback its a learning curve for me and intend to enjoy every step of it.

I started again earlier this year after a 5 year break, got half way through this then bailed due to lack of time and patience. Hope to get back into it after the festival is over..

harvey, hope i didn't sound like i was knocking you and glad we agree that an image has to work on more than one level. take my hat off to you for putting yourself up to be shot down, everyone has to start somewhere and by the looks of it yuo're at least halfway there, you just maybe need to define what it is you are trying to convey/project and do so in as unique a style as you can, without being different for art's sake.
i could not even come up with a base level, yet alone one to improve upon or even one then consider to guage opinion and look to improve still further from the feedback.
brave man, perhaps stupid? definitely brave though. good luck and rember that fortune favours the brave - i don't mean monetary fortune either, i mean a wealth of possibility - good luck.
tom.
