The Meaning of 'Hype', by carlito on Aug 13, 2007 13:12:39 GMT 1, I see this word used alot of this forum whenever someone wants to have a dig at anyone who's not Banksy... in the dictionary it says,
'1.deception or racket; 2.intensive or exaggerated publicity or sales promotion;'
it goes on, but the point is that it revolves around going way over the top in praise, or in fact lying to promote an item(s) for sale...
so it's pretty negative and i guess that's how people use it here, in quite a few cases this is completely incorrect if someone like something and someone agree's where's the exaggeration?
People see hype where in fact there's vocal majority who are positive about someone.
The true hype occurs on this board where someone is making a point about 'worth' because in general terms it then becomes a sales promotion 'wow look at these prices this is the guy to buy now'.... the hype around Beejoir occurred when the first SBFO (ed of 40) went for loads and we all discussed it to death...the hype around Neate occurs with threads like which Neate will hit 3k first etc...the hype around Micallef when a jd went for 2.5k....
not sure why i started all this...think i was annoyed ppl just using hype as an explanation whenever they don't like something ... aww I don't know its Monday, got a horrible cold and feel like sh*t ...

The Meaning of 'Hype', by Yessir on Aug 13, 2007 13:23:07 GMT 1, I think hype can be a good thing when the artist is worthy of it.
The problem comes in, like you correctly say, when hype becomes a "sales promotion" and the artist is not worthy of it ( we can all name a few ).

The Meaning of 'Hype', by Daniel Silk on Aug 13, 2007 13:33:41 GMT 1, I dont think we get much false hype on here its mostly just people that have seen or have just got a piece by an artist and they come on here to let everyone know how much they like it ;D
The prices that things sell for on ebay I guess can create a sort of hype, but if its a false hype or not is very hard to say People were saying Banksy values were just hype two years ago but the values kept going up, and up do we have a time when people can say if it goes past so many years its no longer hype, its the real thing? ;D

The Meaning of 'Hype', by jonpud on Aug 13, 2007 13:53:39 GMT 1, The only people who should be concerned with 'hype' are the 'investors' not the collectors!!
If you love the image then it will be worth every penny you paid for it, if you don't then you have fallen into the sales hype trap!!
I see a lot of members coming on here and hyping up their new purchase, think this shows a level if insecurity and the need for them to be reassured that it was a good buy at a good price. As interest rates go up, prices will go down, at that point you will see record levels of 'hype' as people panic over the falling price of their 'investment'
On the other hand the collectors come on here and proudly display their new purchases to other like minded people generally not overly bothered about the price rise and fall or the 'hype' that goes with it.
Think I fall somewhere inbetween, the majority of the time I buy what I love but..... sadly I have bought a couple that I was unsure of but didn't want to miss out on the next big thing!!
Hated to admit that...sad bastard! ;D

The Meaning of 'Hype', by carlito on Aug 13, 2007 14:04:17 GMT 1, i think the point I was making somewhat convuletedly ...was that if you have a criticism of an artist or a piece of art - make your point - don't just say 'the only reason you all like it is hype'...as in most cases it wasn't hype just ppl loving the work
we get hype everywhere unfortunately but lets hope here at least we can get away from it and deal in like / dislikes honestly with each other
f5 nature of buying recently has taken away some of this though unfortunately..I freely admit on more the one occasion I've bought and then decided if i liked it later...which is pretty cack but hey you live and learn

I agree, it's not always 'hype' it's become a lazy label that's over used.

no ignorance I'm sure probably down to my poor writing jon ... err all i meant was ppl use 'hype' as a criticism when in fact hype has no real merit...ppl can say whether they like something or not but obviously it's not their decision what you like or dislike..

I'm never coming on here again!

Yeah, sometimes it seems that everyone gangs up on some artists and it can get quite cruel, I don't think there's any need for that, they'll always be a few who like what 90% or more don't like.

The Meaning of 'Hype', by carlito on Aug 13, 2007 14:35:55 GMT 1, it's fine for ppl to like or dislike, but its also fine to be the one with the totally opposite view which seems to go amiss on occasion here, there's one very popular artist on these boards who I've very little time for but I never pipe up because I know I'd get a whole load of sh*t in my direction...
on the cruel point - a laugh is one thing but no need for cruelty - I missed that eric the dog thread...I may not want any of his work on my walls but I've alot of time for his stlye it's different and pretty cool i think
